I love that there are other people in the world that talk about this! :D I've been doing some digging into the specifics of Brady's diet, and it looks like he eats mostly good, nutritious food (80% plants, lean proteins, limits low-nutrient food ("junk food"), but as with many functional diets, the myths mixed in…

Thanks! I actually tried to search for this before I posted mine-- I guess I didn't do it right. I'll take a look. :)

Errr... I wasn't actually getting any info *from* the Biggest Loser. I don't even watch it! This article is about research done on BL participants.

Thanks for chiming in. I guess it struck me as using scare tactics because of his loaded language and imagery, like, "That innocent looking sweet roll is loaded with... [practically poison]" and it's going to chafe your arteries like sandpaper! Not that I think an abundance of sugar and disproportionate omega-6 is healthy,…

Thanks for the replies! So, out of curiosity, does anyone have a handy link for the foods that contain various "parts" of complete protein? I'm wanting to verify that my diet is varied enough to include most of them regularly.

Does dairy count? 'Cause it wouldn't be unusual for me to eat dairy at all 3 meals. Otherwise, I have eggs for breakfast most days (sometimes with bacon or sausage), and dinner almost always contains some meat. Lunch is usually dinner leftovers, so usually meat there too. I don't try to do it on purpose exactly, but I do…

These don't contain tons of nutritional information directly, but I really enjoyed "Diet Cults" by Matt Fitzgerald. Lots of good info about why we eat the way we do and whether the fads have any science behind them (hint: usually not). Very similar to that one is "The Gluten Lie" by Alan Levinovitz.

Gotcha. I'm thinking along the same lines. I suppose I should take a look at the actual study and try to sort it out for myself. ;)

Thanks for this explanation! The human body is a strange and miraculous thing. I'm not sure how Plexus Block is supposed to work, but your theory sounds plausible. I wonder how much of an effect it has and what the possible side effects for such a thing would be. Not interested for myself, just curious from a scientific…

Sorry I was confusing. :) I have no interest in trying any Plexus product myself, and I know that they make lots of glorious claims that are backed by tenuous evidence at best. I guess I just wondered if there IS such a thing as "blocking" the blood sugar response to carbs, and what that would entail. (I like to get all…

Nobody??? (Also, my notifications say there should be one comment here, but I can't see it. Maybe it was deleted?)

Just reading about this yesterday, eh? This basically sums up why I asked this group: ya'll are a bunch of nerds! (I mean that in the highest complimentary way possible.) ;) Seriously, the combination of scientific resource and common sense on these forums is invaluable to me. Thanks to everyone who chimed in. :)

In theory, or on average, perhaps. But some women (me!) are STARVING in that first tri. I also get sick if I don't eat in the first 12-14 weeks. I don't think my body would make a mistake, so I went ahead and are extra. I gained about 5-8lbs in the first 12 weeks, and then my appetite leveled off and the weight gain slowed…

I'm disappointed that no one here wants to talk about the *ideas* in the article, specifically the effects of insulin response on weight, and how diet effects that. Don't get me wrong, I definitely believe in CICO, but what I hoped some more educated minds than mine would contribute some thoughts to the idea of…

That's the guy, but I don't see anything in there about people getting sick from his crops. My sense is that she had heard incorrectly, but I figure I better look into it so I actually know what *I'm* talking about!

I didn't mean to indicate that I'm still trying to increase my weights regularly since pregnancy. I've never lifted anywhere near my one rep max. I'm confident that I'm not endangering my baby. But I don't want to hurt my back... I just wonder if it is necessary to be as extreme as her recommendations. (Also, the "don't…

I do need to ask her for more info-- it was a lot of information in one visit and I had to come home and process before sorting out what more I need to know. Figured I'd ask here in the meantime.

Along with not being flat (I can hardly find a spot in my house where the scale doesn't wobble!), I think some "hard" floors have more give than others. The linoleum in my kitchen weighs heavier than the linoleum in the bathroom. (I usually weigh in the bathroom. :P )
-
Haha, I don't think so! I have 2 s's and 2 n's in my first name alone-- that's more than my fair share of burpees!
-
I usually average about 1 cal/rep of a total body exercise or a rep of heavy weights. This compares closely to the calorie burn estimates on videos from Fitness Blender, so I think it's a decent gauge. As with most things, try it, give it a few weeks, tweak based on results. :)

I'm almost 10 weeks along, so I'm right there with you! But I'm eating at maintenance (or above, on the days when I get so hungry I get queasy. I'll take a few extra pounds over throwing up!). I know how it is to start seeing pounds appear right away in pregnancy; even a few can be worrisome. Try to remember that your…

I hover between 5'6" and 5'7", and I would like to get back down to 135, which is what I weighed for a few years after reaching my final height. Then I got married and gained a bit of weight, and then got pregnant. Post-partum, I got into fitness and lifting, and I'm now around 140. I know I have more muscle than I used…

I'm about 6 weeks along, and determined to not gain as fast/to lose it sooner than I did with my first! This is a little bit tricky because I struggle with first-tri nausea that is only soothed by eating something! Thinking of getting some sugar-free ginger candies or ginger tea to combat the need to munch constantly.

Wow, this got resurrected! Thanks for all the suggestions. I recently bought and completed FitnessBlender's mass building program, which used only dumbbells and body weight. I'll have to check out some of these links too.

I have a friend who I love dearly that this thread reminds me of. I wouldn't call her fat, but she carries some extra pounds and I know she's unhappy with her weight. Unfortunately, her family believes every new "health" fad that comes down the pike: toxins, gluten-free, low-carb... What have you. When I successfully lost…

I'm a woman doing Stronglifts. There is no reason women can't do the same routines as men, though your wife will likely need smaller weights and may need to increase by smaller increments at a time. :)

Got it, thanks. :)

Wow, the experts chime in! I'm flattered! (No knock to anyone else who commented-- I don't recognize everyone here, but I know LolBroscience and usmcmp know their stuff!) All things to think about. If I were to get a few sessions with a PT, how would people recommend I go about finding a good one?

Thanks, everyone. I confess that I do have some knee soreness, so as much as it frustrates me, I guess I'll de-load and figure out how to get this form down! (The pun was an accident, but I'm glad you got a chuckle out of it! :p )

Thanks, everyone! Sorry about the weird video-- not sure what's up with that. But when I get access to a real computer, I'll mess with it. Trust me, squat rack is on my wish-list! I don't typically do the rotation thing when re-racking; that was just for getting a better video angle (which apparently still could have been…
