How do you figure they become less effective? How are you measuring effectiveness?

Ah, understood. I thought you were referring to DOMS and judging progress based on how sore you got. That's how I grew up exercising and I quit countless times because I would progress to the point that achieving DOMS every time was difficult and I was convinced I was failing. I have been on a bit of a crusade against…

Start from where you last lifted and if you feel you need to drop 5-10 lbs. two weeks is not much to worry about, hell! many people come back from one week stronger than before if they have been doing progression for a long period. If you are noticeably weaker it probably comes down to your being sick.

Doing cardio to chase down excess calories is not imo a productive cycle to start. Get your calories in in line then add calories as needed to support your exercise while maintaining a deficit, assuming weight loss is the goal.

Inflammation isn't fat though. Sodium can cause retention, you can see it on the scale and even in the mirror but it's still not fat.

I really think it's a form issue. Most people have them at the bottom from what I see, that's probably where the "squat just past parallel" wisdom came from. Perceiving a potential risk and telling people to avoid it rather than correcting for it seems to be a common method on forums and among trainers.

Funny, I was going to recommend "delays" anyway lol. Or just holding the squat for a few counts early in your set. Combine that with shallow squats progressively going deeper after each rest day. Lastly you may want to have that hip checked out. It could be an injury that's not healing between workouts, connective tissue…

Yeah, there are much lighter bars available. The one I keep in the back yard is mebe 10-15lbs. 1" all the way across and pretty ideal for the very new newbs. I don't see them in gyms though but straight curl bars can be repurposed also I suppose.

Slaite and Amy are both spot on. Get someone to spot your movement in case your posture is faltering. You may have the butt wink at the very bottom and that well could cause pain. Try de loading a bit and lastly be sure you control the motion the entire time. It may be tempting to let the weight take over and drop into…

I'm in, no idea what my goal will or should be but I will log my steps. I met my steps easy last time so I'll restrict my entries this time to just exercise steps. Steps not just from work and such.

If you want to progress yes, or alter some other aspect of the exercise. Just like with calories if you simy stick to a set number you will eventually reach an equilibrium. That's not bad so to speak, just know that walking the same loop at the same pace/intensity will eventually become just maintenance.

Lying while squatting? To the OP have someone who knows what they are doing check you out. You might be able to reposition the bar or try another squat all together. I rest the bar directly at the base of my neck because low bar seems to push me forward, front squats are hard with high weights because my wrists don't seem…

It's all psychological, we have been taught to expect certain things and sound advice has consistently been distorted and misrepresented. I used to change my exercises constantly and identify "burn" as a sign of effectiveness. Do you log your progression? And can you share your routines? The assumption you stated leads me…

There have been back and forth opinions concerning sit-ups/crunches specifically since I was in high school and probably before. There is some interesting math concerning the amount of compression the movements can generate but without a clear understanding of what's normal and what's not it's hard to know if they are just…

I learned to do the opposite too, a while ago my work bought lunch for everyone and the agreed upon source was one of those texmex places where portion control is a foreign concept. I indulged to the point of being uncomfortable and had only a rough estimate of the calories but I decided I didn't need diner... Then I…

I do have a bit of dairy intolerance, I have found that by greatly reducing my overall calories that my symptoms all but disappear if dairy is kept to a minimum. But the last two days with the heat my work has been providing gator aid, snacks and gasp! Ice cream. Things have not been pleasant. As for grains we have enacted…

The physics works perfectly, the math dosent so much just because we don't have all the numbers to work with. Your maintenance number is an estimate, your calories burned is an estimate, your calories logged is an estimate. That's a LOT of opportunities for margin stacking. So you say the math says you should have put on a…

Health issues aside I'm amazed at the number of people turning against the very thing that has allowed civilization to exist at all. Patiently awaiting the no water trend to start.

My first few days were just logging my then current diet. Compared to my recomended intake I was atleast a thousand calories in the red daily. At that point I actually found making that first large cut suprisingly easy. I was still eating 2500 a day and nowhere near hungry. I started noticing the impulses that put me in…

I found starting out that I could easily come way under my set goals. I wouldn't worry about it but I wouldn't recomend taking advantage of that fact either. Eventually the margins will get tighter and your ability to manage your "budget" will become crucial to success. Use this time to work on setting goals and meeting…

I find that water displaces the soda effectively. If you are drinking the amount of water recomended (especially if you are being active or exercising as part of your change) it's actually rather hard to fit soda or much else in. Yeah soda has water but realistically I can't during the volume of soda needed to keep up with…

Another assumption is that the good things must come in "tiny" portions. So longbas it dosent consistently displace a singjificant amount of your other desirable macros there's nothing wrong with havin a significant portion of a treat and making room for the calories elsewhere. I have indulged in some ridiculous DQ…

In that case the statement "he eats like a bird, and still can't lose weight" takes on a new and very accurate meaning.

Yeah, people's ability to rationalize can vary with the subject. She probably empathizes strongly with her friend and is in her mind atleast protecting him from the harshness of criticism. Agreeing with you about what has worked for you and has been a positive thing is easy, applying that same idea to her friend may in her…

Honestly, start with calories. That's all you "need" to manage weight. When you account for your calories I think the rest will start to become obvious over time. When you are no longer snacking for the sake of snacking you'll probably find the typical snacks less appealing. Trying to eat "clean" or "healthy" is both a…

Well it's those very details that are used to muddy the waters and give people little more than emotional reactions to go on. The way animals are treated in that movie is simply not accurate. The makers take the few accounts of abuse and cruelty hat do happen ( and should be addressed but instead are debased as…

I never looked into the guy, but I could smell the malarkey instantly. Like I posted earlier the premise is not "fast food is bad" it's "this is what happens when you eat everything in front of you". The execution is deceptive but even taken at its word the "documentary" is about choosing to over eat, not eating any…
-
But the movie is in no way about "fast food" it is actually about the consequences of not taking responsibility for ones choices. People forget that the driving premise was him surrendering the option to not eat everything offered to him. The fact is if you replicated his process but instead of stipulating that you HAVE to…

Well... I wouldn't expect that conversation to go anywhere in the neighborhood of productive. You might resign the subject to the same shelf as politics and religion for that particular friend. But you might have made progress if you had backed up your statement with the observations you mentioned here, unless you did and…

The trick is to set all your clocks to another time zone before indulging, fools the body every time.
