That whole "drink 8 glasses a day stuff" is nonsense. You get water in food and other drinks. Drink when you're thirsty. https://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/25/upshot/no-you-do-not-have-to-drink-8-glasses-of-water-a-day.html

Things that helped me to cut down: 1) mixing a smaller amount of wine with juice or sparkling water, then I still feel like I'm getting a big glass but I'm not really, 2) I get boxed wine (there's lots of good stuff out there) so I don't feel that I *have* to finish the whole bottle or it will go to waste, 3) I get small…

So, out of curiosity I was able to see your diary. I didn't see 1300 calories, I saw like 2000+ on most days with a few days here and there with like 1500-1800. Another thing I noticed is you eat a lot of processed sugary foods. Just because something contains "all natural ingredients" doesn't mean it's not junk food. I…

Why aren't you losing weight? Well... 1. You might be overestimating how many calories you're burning from exercising. The most we can realistically burn from exercise alone is about 200-300 calories per day. Your body has a sort of threshold of how many calories it can handle burning per day. When you cross your body's…

Sometimes healthcare providers will work with you to find medications that are covered, or they might have coupons or know about some resources. But yeah I hear you, my preferred medication, Vyvanse, is only covered by a handful of insurers because there is no generic option. That also means pretty steep copays even with…

I had a big setback earlier this year when I injured my back. It was awful, I could barely move. In a way, because I had to give up exercise, I was pretty good about doing my PT exercises since it was all I had. Another thing that was a huge help for me, the gym I go to has a Therapy Pool. My PT gave me some simple…

Pilates is a great way to build muscle mass and it's good for your overall health. When you do Pilates, you learn how to support your body from the core and to truly understand movement, which means you can engage in any physical activity with less of a chance for injury (or increased recovery time if you do get injured).…

Not exactly... you can only lose weight if you eat less. Exercising MORE does not burn more calories, unfortunately. http://www.vox.com/2016/4/28/11518804/weight-loss-exercise-myth-burn-calories

Don't factor in physical activity to your TDEE calculation. Do it with sedentary and that's your base calories. Also, any TDEE formula that uses BMI is not going to be as accurate as one that uses Lean Body Mass. You can estimate your fat body mass either with a scale that does that sort of reading or just by looking at…

The reason people may gain all their weight back and not pay attention to it until it becomes a problem could be tied to a mental health issue. It can also be due to physiological issues, like chronic pain or chronic fatigue. At least that's how it was for me. I knew I was gaining the weight back, but felt powerless to do…

The "common knowledge" of physics applied to the human body is about as substantiated as the "common knowledge" that eating cholesterol literally raises your cholesterol. The truth is, it's more complicated than that and research showing anything different is oversimplifying and likely incomplete. This is a great article…

Do not eat back your reported exercise calories. The most we can burn, on average, is 200 calories per day. A study recently came out that studied a variety of different populations across the globe with different diets and activity levels. What they found is it doesn't matter how active you are, your body will compensate…

Hi @sijomial, while what you are saying would seem to make logical sense, it doesn't actually play out that way in the real world. http://www.cell.com/current-biology/abstract/S0960-9822(15)01577-8 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2647711/ "A growing number of studies examining the long-term metabolic effects of…

Do not eat back exercise calories, just set your target calories higher. I think MFP's formula is pretty good, albeit generous, so stick with the "sedentary" option to offset that. I calculated my TDEE (BMR * 1.2 for sedentary) for my target weight of 140 lbs and it's 1500-1600. My idea is I eat that much now to create a…

I calculated sedentary TDEE for my target weight, that came to about 1600 cals. By making that my target, I'll know how much I'll need to eat to maintain once I get there. It does mean that weight loss will really slow down for me as I get closer, but I'd rather do that than feel like I'm on a diet. Also, the idea of…

You don't actually burn a significant number of calories from exercise but it certainly does have other health benefits. There's actually been a lot of research on this, and while a little bit of exercise certainly helps, our bodies seem to have an upper limit of how many calories we can burn each day. If you try to cross…

I'm not a WW fan. Just figure out, roughly, your target calories for a day and log what you eat. Increase or decrease calories according to your weight trends. WW makes eating really complicated. Also make sure you eat enough fat. I know if im doing too many "low fat " low calorie " foods I'm sooo starving by the end of…

Check your body composition and measurements in addition to your weight. Weight is a strange creature.

Last time I lost weight, my shoe size actually increased by half a size haha!! I was doing the minimal shoe thing with the vibram 5 fingers and vivo barefoot, and it seemed to have stretched out my feet or something. Or maybe my shoes were always a little snug and once I got used to more space I just couldn't go back. Now…

Currently 210 lbs, target is 150 lbs 5'6.5" Currently 40"/34"/48" At my target weight: 36"/30"/40" I'm pear shaped with most of my weight in my hips, thighs, and calves. I'm of basque, Cuban, and Quebecois descent, good ol' peasant farmer genes, so I'm really wide hipped and bulky even when I'm thin. Current bottom size:…

Studies regularly show that kids who are denied junk food tend to have problems with overeating when they make their own food decisions on their own. I can personally relate to this as it's exactly what happened in my household. Instead of demonizing the junk food, teach her how to consume it in moderation. The minute…

Depends. There are a few different formulas for calculating BMR and TDEE. Your best bet is to try to get an Lean Body Mass estimate and use formulas that use that to calculate your TDEE rather than using a height/weight BMI ratio, which is what MFP uses. I found MFP to be a little in the higher range of calorie targets.…

EAT THE CARBS!!! THE CARBS COMPEL YOU TO EATS THEM!! If your problem is mindless snacking, try chewing gum or drinking flavored fizzy water. If you find yourself hungry right after eating, you a) might not be eating enough or b) might need more fat or protein. Also adjust your meal times to fit your hunger cycles. For…

Nope @Pathmonkey they just ate loaves of highly processed starch and/or flat cakes made from proto-grains. http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2015/09/14/440292003/paleo-people-were-making-flour-32-000-years-ago Seriously, "Grok"??! My diary is also open! I don't do low fat or low calorie or low carb or any of that. I did that in the past and it didn't work for me long term. There are some people that have metabolic issues that require them to limit certain macros, but for most of us, macros don't really matter in weight loss, just total calories. I…

How did you come to that 1400 number? What's the range you calculated for BMR/TDEE for your target weight? If you're creating too high of a deficit, you risk losing more lean mass than you would with a smaller deficit. This isn't a race and you are more likely to stick with it and maintain your weight loss if you learn…

I put on about half a kilogram but I'm also really bloated from the extra sugar so I think it's all water. I tracked the candy I ate and even though I went over my calorie goal (1500), I was still under my BMR/TDEE for my current weight (2200). The sad thing is the candy wasn't even that good, it was crappy Palmer's that…
