Both, eat something high energy before so something moderately high in carbs to give you some energy and post workout have something high protein to feed the muscles and make sure the meal also has moderate carbs to refill your glycogen sources, but that's just what I do which works well for me. I've been training for just over a year now and I struggled with the same thing. motivation came and went...still does at times but what I do is look how far I've come... and where I started from and where I'll be in the future, think of what your goals are whether long term or short term and let them motivate you.
