I always get stuck with a big person for the drag someone across the mat warm-up. We have gotten away from that warm-up over the last couple of years though - can't say I miss it all that much.

Boxing class and then one of the pro-boxers asked me out of all the hobbyists if I could get some sparring rounds in with him. He has a fight coming up with a killer from out of town. I felt honored and can always use the work on my striking even if he did drop me with a liver shot. (Which he totally complimented me on…

Positive vibes your way!

Who the heck are these people that think making such comments are ok? I was always taught if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. Geez. Ignore the jerk and prove him wrong. You can and will do this!

I treat cleaning up/household chores as a "bonus" workout for the day. I put my workout tunes on and try to clean at a faster pace and try to get my heart racing we elevated a bit. Voila - help with fitness and the cleaning g is done quicker, plus the bonus mental health. ( I hate clutter and seemed to be the only one in…

Yep. After BJJ rolling and having gotten someone's huge sweat drop directly in my mouth or directly in my eye, sweat on some weight bench is nothing. Combat sports gets you over the sweat issues real quick.

$120 a month for unlimited BJJ and Kickboxing at my MMA gym. I was grandfathered in. New students pay $150 for both ($120 for one or the other alone)

I didn't check in line I should have at the end of the week. Still hitting noon kickboxing everyday and doing my triathlon training on the side. Saturday I put a Gi on for the first time since my rib re-injury at Master Worlds at the end of August. We had Mike Fowler (high level and pretty well known BJJ black belt) in for…

Flipping awesome! Love this post. You have been doing and will continue to do it. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Keep up the awesome work!

Went for a swim at the local fitness center to get a baseline on the swimming portion of my sprint triathlon training. (Been biking and running already - time to start swimming too...) What I found out? If I had to do an open water swim tomorrow? I would drown. Very humbling experience, that I needed. Swimming needs mucho…

Yesterday 5k run at noon then night boxing class and an hour of sparring after. Today a 1/4 mile swim for triathlon training. Hope to make it to kickboxing class tonight, but that depends on the kiddos.

Boxing bag class yesterday then some strength and conditioning. My knuckle on my left hand is cut right at the joint and taking forever to heal so bagwork is limited to right hand contact only.

BJJ was the only exercise I did for my first 50lbs of weight loss. Tweak to the diet - i.e., not eating fast food every meal - BJJ 4-5 times a week and that first 50 just fell off. Next 25 or so required more diet refinement but BJJ along with a bit other of the primary stand up arts in MMA still made up all of my…

It's funny in my (MMA) gym. You will often have the male parents watching their kids do kids BJJ, kind of size up the adults that are walking by to train. Not quite "mean mugging," but a subtle but still noticeable bit of chest puffing. (These are guys that don't train or at least don't train at our gym.) A few will even…

This used to be an issue for me. Once my wife found an evening thing she enjoyed - Zumba, it stopped being such an issue. We compromised and switch off. (We both train on our lunch hours.) Then one of us gets 2 night classes a week and the other one class. We then flip flop the next week. The spouse at home handles kid…

Maybe I went about it wrong in light of the health concerns part. Maybe I got lucky. I am not so arrogant as to claim my way is the right way - and perhaps it was a way that worked though not necessarily safe. Again, I am giving my experience. Many exercises are much harder to quantify than biking or running. Most of my…

If you can give me a ballpark accurate way to measure caloric burn during training, sparring, and competing in combat sports, I am all ears. - I'm not being facetious.
-
My point is I know with much more precision what I am taking in if I am diligently weighing and logging vs. what I am burning because their are a heck of a lot more variables in my caloric burn vs my caloric intake. 100 cals in 200(g) of a x food item does not change. My burn for a given exercise is subject to more…

You have a very similar response as Jane. Again, I thank you for at least having the courtesy to put forth your opinion, rather than just hitting "woo."
-
Then what is the correct portion? There is a level of guess work in all of this. I am guaranteed more precision if I don't eat back. I trust my food scale a lot more than a HRM. It gets even worse the better shape I got in. It takes a heck of a lot for me to break a sweat which means re-calibration of estimated burn via…
-
I wish those that Woo would have the guts to state why. I was talking about me and my experience, and not eating back cals, especially with the notorious unreliability of the estimated burn.
-
I generally don't eat back unless it is a special occasion. I use it as a cushion often coinciding with a cheat meal. Even then I cut exercise cals in half. MFP way overestimates the burn on most of my activities (I have experimented quite a bit with HRTs that go across the chest.) Everyone is different, but I want to…

I was gonna say just before I read this, OP should join a boxing gym.

1. My kids both to be there as they grow up and as an example. 2. My various short and long term athletic goals. I continually add more as I complete the current ones. Never complacent. Movement is life.

For me it really was finding a workout/activity that fit my addictive personality. Loathed traditional gyms so exercise and I had an on again/off again relationship. Once I found my "thing" Any free time was dominated by it (and still is). When I ate, I knew what and how much I ate would effect my activity the next day.…

I add whatever I can do including workouts I would normally do but would help with my training - for example extra ab work. Strengthening the core is always helpful though it doesn't necessarily translate to improved technique. My slow healing rib has me branching into other workouts including this weird triathlon goal…

Welcome Flo!

I haven't checked in the last two days. Tuesday I did triathlon training - 20k on the bike at a much brisker pace than normal. I then ran 5k after and was able to keep my normal pace, but I to use a bit more willpower than normal. Yesterday I went a little overboard. I had the morning off, so I sparred with one of our Muay…

People in my gym are ostracized if they fail to wash their Gi after every session. I think it is different in BJJ because you are having close contact with someone every session which increases potential for staph, ringworm, etc. Kata heavy arts you are not goons transmit stuff to others as much - though you may smell a…

Boxing class today and then a litttle lifting. Worked hard, but no earth shattering breakthroughs on problem areas.
