  • The staff are there to help you - that is what they are paid for. You have paid for your membership so don't hesitate to make that outlay work for you. The staff at my gym are always very happy to help and never make me feel foolish, even though I am!
  • Yes, me too. The line is still going down, though, so we will get there.
  • Thanks. Probably best I stick with only eating back 50-60% of my exercise calories.
  • Good point. OK, change of question: how reliable is the reading the gym machine gives me likely to be, given that I specify my weight and set the level? I am hoping that there are some informed people out there who might be able to give me a steer on this. Thanks.
  • "I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So now I take great comfort at the general hostility and unfairness of the universe." Marcus, Babylon 5 This is my mantra.
  • I agree with dizzie blonde that exercising to "earn" the opportunity to eat more is the way to go. I am on 1200 and realise that it is, of itself, unsustainable - for me, anyway. What setting the bar so low does is force me into exercise. I want to eat about 1500 to feel comfortable. MFP exercise estimates are unreliable…
  • From your Home page go to exercise, then cardiovasular, then elliptical trainer is there in the menu. Be warned, though - my gym machine gives me a slightly lower calorie read than MFP's guesstimate.
  • I like sportjock.
  • I weigh and log on a Sunday morning. Since term ended (I am a teacher) and I have had time in the mornings, I have weighed more than once a week. I wish I hadn't - today I am marginally up from Sunday. I know about variations, water eight etc. but the emotional impact is discouraging. So now I am off to the gym.
  • Well done! The fat will be going from inside you, too, freeing up your organs and making you massively more healthy for that handsome young man next to you.
  • I don't think it would be possible to do it for 24 hours.

  • Cheese stick, almonds and raisins are all quite calorific, I think.
  • On what are you snacking? Maybe if you were to prepare "harmless" snacks like celery and cucumber strips (both of which I find disgusting, but that's just me) you could minimise the damage.
  • I have to say, though, I prefer RPM.

  • It needs a capital S. It is there, I just checked.

  • Apologies for excessive bolding. Excessive - or, indeed, any - bolding now removed. Thanks to blankie finder for the tutorial.

  • When I had this problem a friend went out and walked the Dorset coast recording the sea at various locations we had walked together and presented me with a really long sound track on cd and sd. It sends me off beautifully. I know sea sounds cds can be bought.

  • Back into my - and my husband's - favourite size 12 (UK) top. Bit worried about the cleavage though. I think I have more boobage now than I did then - or more prudery!
  • Pump on a Monday, RPM on a Friday. I like the current releases - no plank!
  • Go straight from work. Delay watching hulu (what is hulu?). This way you get benefits all ways.
  • The less you have to lose, the slower it goes. Don't feel a failure, you're not one. Half a pound is easily within normal fluctuations. I am sure more knowledgeable people than me will be along soon to talk about hormones and water weight. Keep on working at it but be kind to yourself; life is too short to be unhappy.
  • I am back from having done it - 35 minutes on the elliptical and some strength, core and balance work. I will top it up later with a brisk country walk. Thanks for the leg up, everyone; we all need one sometimes. Soopatt, I am also 5'7" and won't be happy till I am at least 150 (currently 175). I am with you on the…
  • Thanks. I am trying to put my recent slowed weight loss down to water retention since it started after I took up BodyPump again. I suspect that the truth of the matter is just that as I get smaller there is less of me to burn calories heaving about. Pump was on Monday. We shall see...
  • And how is this supposed to have any effect beyond placebo? I have no idea. I'm not making any scientific claims. I didn't expect it to work but, for me, it does, so I'm not complaining.
  • Someone, I think on here, suggested a bar of soap under the sheet at the foot of the bed for restless legs. It sounded a ridiculous idea, but I had nothing to lose so gave it a go. I have had no restless legs problems since, it's been months and my exercise regime has gone up, not down. I have no science to back this up -…
  • I have lost a lot from everywhere, including my thighs, through eating less & moving more. Much of my exercise is just brisk walking, though there is also some elliptical work, an rpm class and the dreaded lunges and squats. I was surprised by how much difference just walking made.

  • Personally, I prefer suspenders. Given what suspenders are in the UK, and that you are a chap, the mental image conjured up is...unfortunate. Think Rocky Horror Show.
  • Ah. Hair of the dog that bit you. Thanks.
