  • Way to go Alicia and Pam!! I'm 46 and am also completely changing my body through weight lifting. I've had a lifetime of weight struggles and I've had enough of that. I agree with you too Rose, lifting does amazing things to the female body
  • I just turned 46 a few weeks ago! 40 is the new 30!! Woot Woot! lol
  • Can you do body weight exercises using bands or a TRX type set up. There are a lot of low impact moves using simple equipment such as balls that will help build up your lean mass and metabolism. Don't give up or get discouraged! Its a matter of finding out what works for you. I have Grave's disease and no longer have a…
  • Welcome to all 3 of you! Enjoy the journey for all its triumphs and hurdles!
  • Morning ladies! I'm back on the MFP trying to shed about 10lbs of body fat while keeping as much lean muscle mass as possible. I feel like I've hit a one year plateau! Thick thighs...yep, that's what I dream of slimming down. I'm working with macros for the first time as a body experiment. I want to see what changes it…
  • Had this done for my 45th bday last year. "Life is a Beautiful Struggle"
  • Absolutely no need to start on machines if you have basic coordination. Be mindful of good form and you'll be fine. Strong Curves is a well written program/book, I've always liked that one
  • Yes! I could probably do that. Please be assured that I'm working with my dr and physio. Its been a year of working to get it better.
  • Thanks Amy. I haven't and I'm not sure that I could pain free. But on a good day I'll give it a safe try
  • I'm in! What kind of yoga do you do 4me72? I like to add Vinyasa and Yin around my resistance training. I've never tried crossfit...I seriously think I'd die hahaha
  • Alberta here! I've been off MFP for a while but I'm back. Hope to see lots of chatter in this group :)
  • I'll chat anytime! At my heaviest, in my early 20's, I was over 60lbs heavier than I am today. I dropped around 40 lbs of that over the years by extreme dieting and killing my metabolism. My body was a sad mess. Five years ago I started simply with clean eating, following the book Clean Eating Recharged by Tosca Reno. No…
  • I just want to say that fitness over 40 is hard work and totally possible! I'm 46 and I have battled a lifetime of bad nutrition, fad diets and weight loss/weight gain too. And the universe thought it would be a kick to throw thyroid dysfunction and vertigo in there too. Five years ago I started making small changes to my…
  • 5'8 and 142lbs. Feeling good but always feel best around 135. I have a really hard time dropping lower that 142. Been working on it for over a year. I seem to be on permanent maintenance whether I want to be or not. My heaviest was 20 years ago at 195. Stayed around 160 for most of my adult life while having kids. Five…
  • It was my first intro to weight lifting and I highly recommend it. The only word of caution is that it calls for a lot of lunges...a lot. I ended up injuring my knee from repetition. I would suggest learning some alternate moves you can substitute once in a while when you get further into the program. And be mindful of…
  • 5'8 and currently 146. Feel best at 140 but I can't seem to maintain it and keep my sanity

  • Oh do I feel your frustration! I'm 6-10lbs up in the last year and now working to get it off, or at least lose some inches. I have to say it annoys me when we hear its because of our age. I plan to fight it every step of the way lol. Do you weight lift? That's my biggest recommendation. The only eating plan that…
  • As far as being able to get toned in your 40s...absolutely!! I'm currently a bit squishier than my profile pic which was almost two years ago but I was 42 then. I deal with loose skin too, especially my thighs. I can't seem to friend request on my phone tonight but if you want to friend me we can chat more tomorrow about…
  • Sounds like several of us in the same situation. Good for us for keeping motivated
  • Feel free to add me. I'm in my 40's and looking to lose the 7lbs of bf I've gained over the last year. I lift and yoga. My profile pic is where I was 2 years ago and I'm trying to get back there. The Mudderella sounds like fun. I'm taking my family to the Color Run this summer. Nothing really intense, but a good time
  • I wish I had advise but I'm in the exact same boat 7 weeks in. I completely understand your frustration. Do you do cardio at all? I've only been strength training with some yoga in there, but I'm starting minimal cardio ( eg. 30min 2x/week) to see if that moves things. I'll let you know if that helps I hope you figure it…
  • 45 in April and have struggled with being some degree of overweight nearly all my life (from pudgy to 60lbs overweight). Started clean eating 3 years ago and saw great results but I'm trying to lose the 10lbs of jiggle and fluff that came back on when I stopped logging and lifting for the past year (damn those salty,…
  • I'm not trying to hijack this post but I have a question that fits right in here. I'm 5'8 and started at 147lbs. I'm 7 weeks into lifting 3-4x /week, no cardio. I weighed myself today and I'm up one lb. I've been eating about 1700 calories per day for the last two weeks (up from the 1400 I started with). I'm seeing muscle…
  • Any mentors older than 40 and into lifting? After 7 weeks of logging, I'm stuck trying to lose some bodyfat. Yes, I am gaining muscle, but I have BF to lose too. I'm not trying to look like a competitor, just to lose the jiggly bits. I'm a clean eater in that I don't do processed. Other than that, I'll eat it. No major…
  • NROLFW was the very first lifting program I ever did. That was about 3 years ago. While I loved the program, and still recommend it, the lunges trashed my knees and I dealt with bursitis and pain for about a year.... so I really know what you're talking about (I'm a year older than you by the way  ). I've built the…
  • If its just a cold, yes. I find I often feel better afterwards. You can do an easier workout if needed. A sweat can do you good. However if you're running a fever and chills, can't get out of bed or are injured, take it easy. Wipe down the equipment after using and everyone will be fine. You're the best judge of how you…
  • Hey Kim! I'm just about to turn 45. I had Grave's disease which is hyperactive thyroid but it was treated with radioactive iodine (20 yrs ago)so now I have no thyroid and fall into the hypo category. Boy do I understand your thyroid struggles. I have two very active teen boys (18 & 15) that thankfully don't struggle with…
  • My PT had me foam rolling as a warm up. I was skeptical at first but now I love it. I've had no lifting injuries since doing this. I prefer to roll any lower body while lying down. I'm healing a bad shoulder and I find rolling it against a wall while standing works well because there's not as much pressure
  • Stepping into a gym can be intimidating. The best advice I can give when new to lifting and joining a gym is hire a PT for your first day, even if you never use them again. Just having someone introduce you to the equipment in the gym makes you feel like you belong there. It really helps break the 'newness' to it all.
