Broke a record here yesterday; it was 90! Mid 80s today; hope it cools off soon!

P.S. Happy Halloween everyone!! :p

Eleted, Mine is weights 3 days a week & a 15 - 20 cardio session when done w/weights. B)

Agree w/Psulemon; I do full-body 3 times a week. Was doing heavy (4 sets of 5-8 reps) and just recently went back to lighter weights and higher reps (if only for a short while just to change it up). I have had to increase my cals because of increasing muscle mass (even at 60+) and am having a hard time maintaining my…

Amazing job; congrats!! B)

I usually have abt 1/2 c of 2% cottage cheese before bed most nights.

Ditto.

Kzooyogi, By teaching (and doing) the yoga class you have probably increased your muscle mass. Muscle is more metabolically active than fat so it requires more calories. I'm in my 60s and was only trying to lose about seven or eight lbs (ended up losing 11); did this on about 1200 or so cals a day (I'm 5' 3") last year.…

Suziecue; I didn't like the gym either at one time. Now I love it! I have gained muscle (which means I have to eat more) and lost some body fat (good thing). Just turned 66 in Sep and trying to keep myself as healthy as possible. Working in a garden center means you are probably lifting weights (good thing for older women)…

Agree w/Heybales. I workout three days a week, usually in the morning. I have a small bowl of Cheerios w/1 or 2% milk prior to going to the gym and have a homemade smoothie when I get back, a small lunch later in the day and then dinner. If I'm hungry later on I'll have a small snack between lunch & dinner. I tried the…

Totally agree; that doesn't mean that you don't fall off the wagon from time to time. It's a lifestyle not a "diet" with an end date. If you fall off, you get back on; you only fail if you quit. If there are times you're not around healthy food, eat the best you can, and don't worry about it. B)

sijomial, My last statement was that "you will have to experiment to see what works for you." This means that what works for one person may not work for another. Also, I'm not saying to ditch carbs; just to cut back on the starchy/sugary ones. Eating good carbs (mostly green) is essential for good health. B)

How your body reacts to different macro %s is usually genetics; but I have heard (and read) that cutting back on carbs (especially starchy/sugary carbs) and upping your protein will help. Sunflower is right though, it usually takes several months to a year to really see results. Ditching the steady state cardio for hiit…

And as a note: most women don't get big--there are a few exceptions. If women do get big they are either eating lots of protein and/or taking something. Benjammmin is correct; weight training will help you reach your strength and aesthetic goals and increase your metabolism.

girlgroves, Check out Bodybuilding.com; they list all kinds of exercises for all body parts. They also have demonstrations on how to do them correctly. Also, any good book store will have books in the health and wellness section on weight lifting. Keep in mind, form is more important then how much weight you are lifting.…

girlgroves, Free weights are probably a little scary at first, but heybales is right abt transitioning to free weights. Just pick some easier exercises (i.e. bicep curls) and use a lighter weight. I use as many free weights (depending on what I am doing) as I can, but use machines for some exercises. I use a Smith machine…

Hi Resina, And welcome to our group!! Eleted is right; age is not a factor! Don't try to change everything overnight (that doesn't usually work); make small changes over time that you can live with for the rest of your life. If you check us out, you can see that we still eat cake, pizza and the like (just smaller portions,…

FYI, I wasn't trying to shame anyone. I just think that she is too skinny. If you look at old pics of the show you can tell she is smaller now than she was back in the 80s or 90s.
-
Sgt1372, what I mean by skinny is looking like Vanna White (or Twiggy for that matter); that woman needs to put on about 8 - 10 lbs. I don't want to look like Twiggy! I have seen older (60+) women that are under weight and it doesn't look good and more than likely not healthy either.
-
Sumiblue, heybales, sorry; should have been lbs not %. I'm at 22% and really shouldn't go much lower--like I said earlier skinny does not look good on older folks and it's not healthy either. I'll follow Sijomial's advice and slowly add calories till I get to a point where I basically stay the same (within a range). Many…

Oops; I meant activity level; there are so many definitions out there not sure if I should be "sedentary," lightly active." or somewhere in between.

OK, need some answers! I'm trying to figure out calories; per the calculator on Bodybuilding.com I have 89-90% lean body mass. What does that mean and how can I use that # to figure out my calories. I'm 60+, do full-body workouts 3 X a week (no pink dumbbells) and eat close to 1500 cals a day (usually more on the days I…

Ann, Many thanks and it's going great. I've had to increase my cals because I keep losing weight; I'm 5'3" and weight around 115-117. I was getting down to 114/115 and I don't want to weigh too little (doesn't look good on older women--makes you look older). Anyway I try to change it up periodically; plan on increasing the…

Eleted, thought I opened it; I'll change it. Had issues a while back; all my friend preferences were dumped so that may be what happened to it. Give it a day and it should be available.

P.S. Congrats on your retirement!! Enjoy!
-
Eleted, You can check out my diary since it is open. I wouldn't start out with some of the weights I'm using as I have doing this for a while. B)
-
Thanks Nana!! Hope folks want to join; we plan on only doing half (or as many as you can) of the recommended reps. It is not meant to hurt anyone; just to be a challenge--so, if you have to use the counter (that's me) to do the push-ups, do it. B)
-
Olga, you can go to the same site and find the chart. Link: https://www.google.com/search?q=arm+challenge&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8.
-
Evesmom, type in "arm challenge" in your internet browser and click on "images for arm challenge" and you will see the chart. The chart has a guy and gal on it w/pics of the exercises. It is from 2013 so should be the one. Tried to copy & paste and couldn't do it. B)

I plan on joining the arm challenge!! :p
