  • Correct - "log everything" but like I said, do we also log that longer walk from the parking lot to our work place? What about healthy laps during lunch at work? What about shopping at a mall where you may walk a few miles? If you aint logging that then coffee and tea can be safely skipped! :)

  • Nope - I drink black coffee and straight up tea with no added anything so I skip loggin it. Its hard enough to log everything as it is, screw that.. Besides, do we log every walk we take and every other little activity? I dont. So, that stuff cancels out, IMO. If you shove 3 creamers and 3 tbs of sugar into your coffee or…

  • Hmmm. I dunno if I buy into that completely. My weight loss was helped a LOT by regular cardio 4-5 times a week. No freegin way I lose as much as I did just with food reductions. No effing way. Exercise also: 1) Helps recomp your body and make you leaner 2) Adds muscle(weight training) which boost metabolism since muscle…
  • I agree - we use Optimum Nutrition vanilla for many recipes and straight up with almond milk for a shake. Works well. Mixes nicely, tastes good without any aftertaste, and always gets good independent test reviews for "true" content. It also has a short ingredient list which IMO is a big plus. NO sucralose and NO other…
  • Im 44 yrs old also. Building muscle for us "middle aged" guys is especially tough due to reduced testosterone and everything else working against us. You seem to be on the same workout structure as me. Im pleased overall with the results and I have beefed up a bit after getting too "marathon-runner-sick" looking for a…
  • Thanks for the info/replies. Its 80% mental...fo sure. Its like taking your recoveringalcoholic frind to the bar with you and telling him just to ignore the drinks and not worry about it. If it were just that easy,we'd never have gotten fat to begin with. ;) Also wanted to post some details onmy calorie/macros: Im 6'1",…
  • I do agree with this to some extent. I eat a ton of salads & greens and the nitrients are great but damnit its hard to stay full on that stuff. Im hungry an bour later...like the Chinese food effect. :)
  • Its a sham. Any of those "deals" or programs that require you to buy stuff from them is very often a sham. What works is the "starvation" diet that they put you on. It has nothing to do with their untested and snake-oil based products. Its the same thing as those "Pass a drug test" formulas that have you drinking 50…
  • Welcome to the unfortunatey very large club of folks that can NOT spot reduce :( Not a damn thing you can do besides more overall weight loss. And, in many cases, weight loss is not what you really need if you are at your target weight. Thats where "recomps" come into play but thats hard to do. Im trying that right now…
  • An evening snack is perfect for the active person and will stave off late night hunger. I tend to go for something more protein and/or fat laden like a Natural peanut butter smoothie, cottage cheese and berries, stuff like that. Works great and causes NO problems. Dont buy into the "you shouldnt eat after 8pm" BS. ;)
  • I watch my sugar intake even though I have good blood glucose numbers & am fit. Just dont need extra sugar or salt for that matter. IMO.
  • Rowing is an amazing full-body workout that gives you cardio and strength training on one workout. We have a Water Rower and its an epic machine. 1/2 hour on thing at a fairly rigorous pace(try to get about 7500 meters in a half hour) will destroy body fat & tone you up like crazy. It doesnt "feel" like you are doing…
  • Yeah - its pretty much CICO. However, with a fairly rigorous workout schedule and some strength training, you CAN certainly eat more and lose some weight or at least recompose with more lean muscle. Not saying you can "out-exercise" a large calorie surplus but very active people who are lean have insane metabolisms and…
  • Me too. Seems about right for my goal of gaining a little muscle bulk while maintaining my weight range. It's a slow process but it's working for me.
  • Oatmeal, eggs, berries, peanut butter, protein pancakes, etc, etc. Breakfast is my favorite meal and the one I tend to go crazy with. Yum.
  • IMO, you have to be careful with cutting carbs too much. Especially if you are active which many people here are. 100-150 grams per day of carbs is the minimum I'd recommend for any active person that's doing some cardio and strength training. On my lifting days I make sure to get at least 150g of carbs if not more. On…
  • Neither beer nor wine are solely responsible for a belly or any other problem area. Overall Calorie intake, other dietary issues/choices, and exercise volume are what ultimately cause or fix such problems. I dont gain any weight and enjoy beer and wine in MODERATION a few nights per week or on the weekends. Fit them into…

  • Sprint 8 - which can be done with a rowing machine, treadmill, outside, etc. Basically its a 20 minute session where you do a 2 minute warm up, go ALL OUT for 30 second bursts and then slow down for 90 seconds. Repeat 8 total "sets". Then, do a two minute cool down. Done. The key like any HIIT is that you MUST REALLY go…
  • Not even really true. A bench and some dumb bells is alls you need for a complete workout. machines are nice but are not required at all. IMO, working out at home has more advantages compared to a gym. You have less excuses(the drive, no time, too crowded, etc) and can get down there whenever you like.
  • All good points. Im 44 years old and have lost a good 95-100 lbs over the last 18-24 months. Im at the stage now where Im dong more serious strength training to regain lost muscle(due to the weight loss) and its sloooooow coming for us old guys  For pure weight loss, especially at first I suggest rigorous cardio.…
  • Tough call. Its very hard to "target" areas of the body that we want to improve as far as fat loss is concerned. Sucks...but thats how it goes. Seems like your cardio valume is good so stick with that. Squats are good for the legs and "booty", especially the deepr you can squat. Deeper Squat = Brings hamstrings and booty…
  • Correct. Small portions suck and ruin a meal. If Im behaving and sticking to my workouts then its 8oz of beef, chicken, fish, or MORE. Too damned bad! :)
  • It does work but be careful not to "overdo" the no-carb thing. You need some carbs and if you are active/strength training then you need even more to replenish your muscles and stuff. Atkins is really kind of a "sham" for anything long term. You cant eat like a Lion for the rest of your life. Its fine for a quick crash…

  • Yeah - 100mg is basically like no sodium at all. What the heck are you eating with NO sodium at all in it? Even spionach and healthy foods have some sodium in them...???
  • Whoa. I thought the whole cholesterol thing was a sham, perpetrated by the makers of statins who profit incredibly off of those drugs? There is no correlation between higher cholesterol and heart trouble. Just like Saturated fat is "amazingly" not harmful after all. The freegin "industry" needs to stop lying to people and…
  • Not eating breakfast is a bad idea. You should try and have something....IMO. As for snacking? I do it and havent had anything bad happen to me. I love my snacks! :)
  • Haters gonna hate! When I lost a bunch of weight(over the last year and a half or so), everyone had comments. Some were encouraging but some were mean & reeked of jealousy. The main thing that everyone wanted to know is what "fad" or "diet" I was on. They would get bummed out when I told them that I am NOT on any stupid…
  • Agreed. I pound here and there, even daily changes is NOT indicative of weight gain. I recommend weighing yourself once a week ona certain day(Sunday for me) first thing in the morning, naked  As for low carb diets, it does help with weight loss but dont go too crazy with it. The "carb-hate" over the last 10-15 years…
  • I simply EAT chocolate! I prefer Green and Blacks 85% dark but will go with Ghiradelli 86% too. Both are wonderful and a half serving is usually alls I need to make me happy. Its good for you. Ignoring cravings only leads to eventual failure, IMO. You want some chocolate? Then eat some! :)
  • A good compromise between the runny & boring "pure" peanut butters which are just peanuts and the overly-processed store bought PBs would be a "natural" PB from Skippy or JIF. We love the Skippy natural PB which has peanuts, salt, palm oil, and sugar. So its NOT "purely natural" per se but it does NOT have any hydrogenated…
