Sorry, you clearly state you are looking lower - somehow I missed that. Next best guesses would be shrugging your shoulders while lifting or having the bar too far away from your legs, thus lifting with your back and not your legs.

Are you looking up during your deadlifts? You should look straight forward - so when starting your lift you'd look down and when standing up forward.

Good form is the key to 'painless' squats. You mention neck and back pain which based on my own experience usually are signs for incorrect bar placement and bad form. Pull your shoulders back and make sure the bar rests on your shoulders without touching your vertebraes (not sure whether that's the correct plural ...). I…

I started on PHUL 5 months ago with an approximate 2.5% progression.
