  • Haha, several years ago I trained for a body figure competition and was on a high protein diet. I was eating chicken till it came out of my ears and drinking tons of protein shakes. After a month of the diet I got severe intestinal cramping and bloating. Had to see a doctor and he asked about my diet, I explained how I was…
  • You have to be really careful with eating TOO much protein though, it can make you constipated! So you really have to have both protein AND fiber!! I have learned this the hard way, too much protein = constipation. It's imperative that you balance it with the suggested daily fiber health officials recommend! Seriously!!…
  • Exactly this. You should have both protein AND fiber in your morning meals to keep you satiated longer. Women need 25 grams of fiber per day, men need 38 grams per day. You'll see reports of 25-30 grams per day, but most health officials state 25 for women and 38 for men. I aim to do at least 8 grams of fiber for my…
  • Turkey Chili!! I found a great recipe online... http://allrecipes.com/recipe/simple-turkey-chili/ Made it a few weeks ago, and my fiance and kids loved it! They added shredded cheese and had crackers on the side. I just ate it as is and it was still really good, yum! And, what I loved was how I just had to copy/paste the…
  • Everything above.... drinking more water flushes out the sodium if you've had too much. Also, if you're exercising, that helps too. If you're on a no caffeine diet then there's foods that are diuretics that can help too....asparagus, green beans, pineapple, beets. Staying under 2000 as gia07 says too is awesome. I get…
  • I used to weigh 235 (on average, it fluctuated) 6 years ago. I lost 85 lbs over the course of a year and a half, and it was SUPER hard at first. You feel like you're doing all the right things but nothing happens sometimes. The very first thing I did was stop drinking all soda...that helped so much!! Then I stopped eating…

  • Ummm....try broiling them for 2 min. It takes on a whole new epic quality....amazeballs.
  • You all suck....I had been trying for months to stay away from these dam things. I was a proud Quest Bar Addict in Recovery, and my pocketbook loved me for it. I just fell off the wagon and bought a case online. Thanks.....
  • I've been riding on a stationary trainer with my bike over the winter months, but now that its nice out I'm going for rides. I'm finally used to the saddle sores from riding, and the rest of me is slowly catching up. I just did the Bending Crank Arms workout yesterday with my bike...that's killer! Have you tried it?? I…
  • Thank you!!!! Seriously, that's one of the best answers. I have a busy schedule and my brain is so fried at the end of the day that my head will explode at trying to calculate everything perfectly with all the equations, calculators etc that are being thrown around. I stick to MFP's default and whatever I get back from…
  • Oh for sure, tell me about it! Super stressful!! haha, weddings are not for the weak! I found that, for me, it was all about baby steps in weight loss. You're right, slight changes over time works best. Don't want to shock your system and get sick or anything. I had a trainer tell me when I'm feeling hungry, just to drink…
  • Thank you!! I use the MFP default so if I burn 300 calories (I can tell they overestimate lol) then I really need to eat back 150 of them, for example. I would do the TDEE but I get lost in the numbers so I just have been using the MFP default. I know there's 'this factor' or 'that factor' that the number gurus love to…
  • This should be something that is answered and then the post bumped so it's always there for anyone else to find. I have this question myself but never have seen a clear cut answer without a bunch of other numbers thrown in or calculations. To eat back the calories burned or not to eat back the calories burned, that is the…
  • I was just going to ask the same thing! I'm interested as well.
  • I found this on Jillian Michael's website....I haven't done it yet, but I don't know...there's not enough specifics. Like is that calorie number different for age/height/weight? "If you’re only trying to lose five, 10, or 15 pounds, you’re in a different place than someone who wants to drop triple digits. You’re not obese,…
  • Yeah, that's a good question. I have only been using my fitness tracker for a little over a month and even though I'm pretty good with nutrition and exercise, I get a bit lost on which numbers to follow and what are "good" numbers for losing weight, etc.
  • If you find out let me know. I am on one myself. I keep reading about calorie cycling when this happens but do not know how to adjust my fitness tracker for this. Or if it will even work, or details on how to exactly do it. I don't want to just "pick" a set of calories to use on my own.
  • You're my new hero. I just got into cycling and only aspire to do that much! My fiance is a cycling freak, and I don't know if he could even do that ride. Wow. Sorry, off topic, just wanted to say that  Great info, btw!!
  • So, the take away from all of this is to basically count the MFP calories burned by as much as half. Or log less time for each exercise to gain a better count of what's actually burned. And then round down and not up. That's what I'm basically getting from all of this myself as well... lol
  • No kidding! I was using the LoseIt! app previously but it didn't connect to my new fitness tracker (Garmin Vivofit) and so I just got onto MFP yesterday and will start logging my exercises on it today. Umm...kinda bummed to be honest if that's the case. But if there's some sort of ratio to keep in mind while logging them,…
  • Serious? Wow, I just got onto MFP and was curious if they under or overestimated. So what's a good way to count calorie burn? I would hate to start logging my exercises today and think I'm burning more than I actually am! No bueno, yikes....
  • It might help if someone that is good with calculations for this type of stuff to weigh in on what her numbers should look like if she were required to eat 1200 calories, and what her net should look like after exercises and food for the day. I can garner an estimate but I'm not experienced enough, so I hope someone else…
  • Personally I aim for one gallon a day (128 oz). It is really good for flushing out excess sodium so you don't retain water (someone already pointed that out I think). It helps hydrate your muscles too so you don't get muscle cramps. If you are getting muscle cramps chances are you aren't hydrated enough. (Although there…
  • Hey Sam! I know the feeling. 6 years ago I weighed 235 and at 5'6 this was not exactly "within my range", this was an average weight for me with my weight fluctuating by 5-10 lbs depending on how active or lazy I was. I had been overweight my whole life, and having kids just exacerbated it. I finally, like you, wanted a…
  • When shopping for foods, stick to the fresh stuff. Most (not all mind you) boxed or bagged foods are processed. Also, males need to get at least 38 grams of fiber daily, look for foods like black beans, lentils, split peas, broccoli, blackberries, artichokes, etc. that are all high in fiber and amazing for you! Too much…
  • Yes, ask your PT first about the deadlifts. If you don't have proper form you can really hurt yourself. He/she can watch you do them and correct your form if needed. You'll hear that a lot with weight training....it's all about your form! Form is key! lol
  • This is great advice! I would listen to it. I used to do body figure competitions and gained a lot of muscle from doing this. Cardio is NOT key to gaining muscle...he's right, back it off. Lifting is great, building muscle helps burn fat, and you can look great without getting too bulky if that is a worry. It's called the…
