i think you will find that it is not so bad. some things are easier. others get harder. generally life gets more interesting and the pleasures i get from ordinary, every day life increases as the birthdays go by. and if a birthday just brought you over the line... hope it was fun. :)

it was a two moments for me... i was re-organizing an online photo album and came across a pile of photos from my last trip to Nepal... at the saddle of an 18000' pass, carrying loaded duffel bags into a clinic tent, climbing up a long, steep, rocky gorge to the next pass, loading up horses with gear, etc. it suddenly hit…

congrats on hitting your goals. that's pretty awesome! being back together after months of being apart is likely to have its rocky patches anyway, even if you didn't want to negotiate changes you'd like to make in your life style, so my first suggestion is go slowly. then consider two things... first, don't wait until you…

I've been in stay-at-home mode now since mid-february and, at least for getting back to regular exercise and a workable diet, it has been a good thing. i've lost thirty pounds (twenty-seven of it after the pandemic rules went into effect) and i am working out four to six days a week again. the big changes? realizing that…

i have been around here for a while. got hit with a string of injuries, fell off the wagon, half-heartedly chased the wagon for a while, now back on it, making progress, and wanting to rebuild my active friends list. send me a note. add me. point me toward an interesting thread for meetng people. whatever works!

what "gottaburnemall" said! and... the challenge with "do what works for you" and "choose the parts you like" is we tend to do what humans do, which is to choose the easy and comfortable and set aside the difficult. we want to believe that a special combination of foods or meal timing or a supplement is going to change the…

i will be sixty in a couple of months. i've lifted on and off for most of my gym rat days. go slowly, find a trainer that realizes that you are closer to fifty than thirty, and give yourself six or eight months before expecting results and you will find that lifting is an excellent way to spend time in the gym.

What she said. Can't emphasize these four enough: CICO, don't undereat, have realistic goals, weigh and log every day. It works if you stay with it. Go for it!
-
I hope it works for you. It clearly didn't for me. My "light on the data" approach was a complete fail, a victim of my natural laziness and lack of discipline. That said, whatever opinions I have about post-goal-weight strategies I will keep to myself until I am actually in that state once again.

thanks all for the kind words. as with almost every fail in my life, i have met the enemy and he is me. and... the now-embarassing "about me" on my profile page is on sabbatical until i am quite a bit lighter. ;)

i'm definitely in the upper and 50ish categories. would be happy to have a few new MFP friends my age, give or take twenty years, too. i will send FRs but... add me!

if i caught her smiling, absolutely.

there are a lot of idjits on the boards. it is too bad there's no melt-their-monitor-in-a-blaze-of-fire emoticon to use when needed. btw, all the work you do in the gym shows. good for you!

quite possibly the worst selfie ever posted on mfp. but... a good day at the gym, pr in squat, split squat and bench.

thanks all... some good ideas here.

this is all really helpful. i am running into some level all of these: joint issues. recovery time. certain lifts that i can't do because of old injuries. i am going to track down mcroberts' book. at the same time, i am enjoying lifting more now than i ever did. maybe because being able to do it all seems a miracle. ;)…

your cardiologist should be able to refer you into a cardiac rehab clinic and the people in places like that are trained to tailor a program to your capabilities. i've been open heart surgery twice. the first time, i did rehab on my own. the second, i went through a stint in a rehab clinic, which was quite helpful. your…

here's my advice... first, get a checkup and be sure that you don't have a cardiac problem, high blood pressure, or the like, especially if this is your first go at exercising regularly. second, without knowing how hard you are working, it is, unfortunately, almost impossible to figure out why you tire so fast. it could be…

new friends here? happy to have a few... feel free to add me.

always happy to connect and i log in pretty much every day. add me if you like.

well... it is called a cleanse for a reason. not a good reason and certainly not one based on any sort of evidence that it cleanses anything of anything or, say, cures urinary tract infections. maybe its called that because doing so encourages people to believe that taking the supplements cleans something of something and…

rather than spend money on weights, you might consider starting a bodyweight exercise program. it is a good way to start strength training, doesn't require you to buy more stuff, and can give you a good base for starting a weights-based training program later on. lots of stuff on mfp and the web to get you going.

when i started, walking, definitely. my first walk was ten minutes. i walked every day gradually increasing my time out until i was regularly doing an hour, then started increasing my speed, adding hills, etc. my goal was always to push a little harder, in some way, every day. these days? i lift three times a week and do a…

so... i make a lot of noise while i am lifting. and, apparently, sometimes it sounds like the noise that men make while engaged in other sorts of exertion. i used to work out in a small gym that shared a wall with an insurance office. as i was leaving after one particularly intense session of lifting, i ran into three…
