Don't they say it takes about 3 weeks for a new habit to form? Is it worth persevering with black coffee? Just had a smoothie for breakfast: almond milk, banana, maca powder and almond butter - all in moderation! (Going to yoga later this morning so don't want to be too full but need the energy!)

I would definately get a medical assessment. But I've read in running magazines that black toes and mangled toe nails are not uncommon in long-distance runners - and I would guess in long-distance walkers too. Maybe in addition to a medical opinion, log onto a running website and post a question there?
