  • Best advice. I'm old and no younger person is going to appreciate being corrected by me regardless of my past experience...especially since I'm an old GAL! My own son who knows my history didn't want to be bothered...til he tore a muscle from improper form. Gym staff is there for a reason. If they're doing their jobs…
  • My strongest sympathy for you. Having been widowed twice, I understand how it can affect you. With my second widowhood, I threw myself into work, the only predictable thing in my life. From 2000-2010, I lost 12 family members and close friends. I too, looked at myself last year and decided that no one I'd lost would want a…
  • Well, I'm 61! I've been using MFP since late May/early June and it has really helped, as Andrea said, "...better understanding of what I'm eating...", PLUS realizing I was eating more empty calories than I should have been. I've gone from north of 180 down to 160. Soooo... YOU GOT THIS, KIDDO!!! To quote: "Good luck to us…
  • I used to have a pedometer...it was a great tool. Then my 5 yr old grandson tried to "fix" it so that it would tell time properly
in Hi Comment by peggykirkby August 2015
  • It doesn't need to tell time. The clock is for your brain to see that a couch potato...or a person at rest, with metabolism in rest mode...will burn fewer calories than a body that's moving around... And yes, I AM aware that the body's metabolic system doesn't just disappear when one sleeps.
  • Dianne, I always read where I see you've commented! My sons suggested this when they did my initial MFP set up. Hence, chores for a household of 7 became part of my Daily Activity Level!
  • Just a bit of wisdom here, which you've probably heard, but forgotten! "As you grow older, your body changes: your metabolism changes, the speed of how foods and nutrients are processed changes, your body's reactions to different foods, how (or even whether or not) they're easily processed also changes and the results of…
  • (Dang...typing on smartphones stinks! A few corrections: "pck"= pkg (package), "knowledge, methods and science MAY HAVE CHANGED, BUT I'M DETERMINED..." "...grandmother X50" and "...search through dozens OF ENTRIES...."!!!)
  • Hi Debbie I'm 61, grandmotger X50, greatgran X9, so I feel your pain! When my sons gave me this, my first, Smartphone, the very first app they insisted I diwnload was MFP...that was about 5 months ago. Since then, I've lost only 22 lbs...slow, but steady improvements to my health and weight, MOSTLY because I'm always aware…
  • By the way...keep a close eye in what time you you eat tour last meal. Metabolism.
  • Totally agree with diannethegeek, especially on #4. I checked my version of a dish against one of the personal entries. I checked each ingredient against the nutritional info on the pkg's or official pages online. My version showed 100+ more calories than the UNverified entry! Anymore, when I match, I either match to the…
  • (That's all basically advice for the novice, btw!)
  • Ahhhh, yes...Fitness Blender not only has beginner and intermediate sessions, but they have some brutal intermediate/advanced "at home" workouts, as well, many of which need nothing but bodyweight...no equipment needed! I would also add that, just as when gym training, you should think about incorporating 'rest days…
  • I'm currently at 1150/cals, down from 1200, only because my activity level went from active to sedate, due to illness. That being said, I am more critically aware of the types of foods I'm consuming, as well as having upped vitamins & supplements that I would normally acquire from food, which I usually burn as excercise…
  • Oatmeal is just that...processed, broken down, into 'meal', even if it's just a bit. Old Fashioned Oats, whether steel cut or otherwise, retain more of the hull, or raw fibre, and is more effective at flushing the bad stuff from your system. An added advantage is that the coarser grains (or raw vegs, even) tend to have a…
  • You are not stagnant, my dear...you have . . . . r e a c h e d . . . . a plateaaaaauuuu! (see how I switched that from a negative thought to a really awesome accomplishment?! Pretty cool for an Old Fossil, huh?
  • Can an old granny add some encouragement here, too?! (are there any other really Old Fossils here, by the way??!!!) Forty is prime, kiddo! You're old enough to be determined, young enough to recover some of that youthful energy that hasn't had time to completely slip away...AND you have us! Instant success!
  • Hi, Brian...my son, 29, was medically discharged from the Army nearly a yr ago. He "took a vacation" from PT for about 2 months, put on about 25 lbs, got disgusted and got to work getting back in shape...and hasn't looked back since. You're going to do great. That 50 lbs is going to give way to the hunk in uniform you…
  • Central Florida, here,,.with a shout to my home at heart, Connecticut!!!
  • Wow...yeah, that's definitely something you want to do as a last resort. Well, you work with the resources and support systems you have at hand, right now (that would be MFP and members, of course!) and go about setting realistic goals...ones that you know you will EXCEED. This gives you leeway for inadvertent slips in…
  • We're all rooting for you! You get there!
  • Lol! My latest, crazy bucket list addition is to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail...comin' and goin'...and I'm 61,at 160 lbs! My inspiration was my mother. At 5' nuthin', and close to 150 lbs, she & my dad took a driving trip through Mexico. Whilest there, along with all the walking tours to sightsee, they climbed several…
