It also takes a couple of seconds to log in calories, but hardly anyone does it consistently based on the fact that 2/3 of America is overweight and a 1/3 of America is obese. It also takes a couple seconds to log in purchases into finance apps like mint, yet the average household is roughly 15,000 in credit card debt. You…

^^ edit*pantry and fridge stocked with whole food

I'm seeing the trend that it's either count calories or get fat. Part of also what I do is just make sure my pantry is stocked with whole food. Sure I may indulge in some processed foods once in a while but I don't keep it in my home too often. I'd say my fridge and pantry is stocked with like 85% whole nutrient dense…

Yea, and I've been suckered into some of these fad diets. Sometimes you just learn the hard way, haha!
-
I have no doubt you will succeed. You've done it before and you could do it again! If I may ask though, what factors caused you to lose focus in the first place?
-
All diets are the same in the sense that calorie burning must exceed calorie storing to lose weight. There are just different dietary strategies to achieve the same end goal. Some strategies are just more effective for different individuals. Person A may not like to think too much so they just drop a food group and go on…

I hear this from a lot of people. People are seduced by the next new shiny object and repeatedly make this mistake over and over like going from fad diet to fad diet. What helped you break this cycle?

*Edit "total pain in the butt," I guess I can't type the a word

*Edit "total pain in the *kitten*" not "total pain in the kitten" =/

I think this might be the answer you're searching for. A lot of the responses in this thread say to count everything. I think it's good to count everything initially so you can understand how many calories are in certain ingredients. By now I am assuming that you know that vegetables are quite low in calories compared to…

This also affected me socially a bit. Back in the day, my friends would eat all sorts of junk, and giving up tasty food meant seeing my friends less so I can exercise or eat something healthier. Luckily I figured that by making the cornerstone of my intake to be whole nutrient dense food, enjoying some donuts or beers with…

I stopped counting veggies. I even stopped couting fruits. I continue to lose weight and I have a lot more energy (maybe it results in more NEAT). Veggies/fruit for me are a guilt free food. Some people will tell you it's not wise to stop counting while others tell you otherwise. The most important thing you do is try it,…

Not sure if serious, but fat loss( assuming you're targeting fat loss and not glycogen storage or water weight) reasonably occurs at .5 - 2 pounds per week depending on the individual, greater than 2 if you're really overweight or obese. Most importantly, losing pounds doesn't happen linearly which is why it's a good idea…

Truly amazing and inspirational AnnPT77! About 15 years ago, my dad had passed away right around the same time my mother was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer. Fortunately she's also a cancer survivor and is still around. Thank you for sharing this information about yourself. I really appreciate it!

Definitely. The more I tried to be perfect, the more I sucked at things. I now aim for "good enough" and then go from there.

Great to hear that you've lost and continue to maintain! People I know who have lost weight allow themselves to eat the foods they love but unfortunately gain it all back again!
-
It can be challenging when your family doesn't understand you or your goals. It can make you feel pretty isolated i would think. =( How have you dealt with family who has made or continues to make you feel that way.

How often do you weigh yourself? What's your carb and salt intake like? Do you weight yourself under the same exact conditions (ie, first thing in the morning wearing the exact same clothes AND after pooping AND peeing)? All these variables influence the numbers on the scale.
-
Congratulations both of you! This is very inspirational!
-
If you don't mind me asking, I have 2 questions. How much weight have you lost so far? How long have you been stuck at your current weight? Hoping to hear from you!
-
Tried that approach for a bit, worked for a bit. Very difficult to sustain. When I did it, i did a pantry/kitchen makeover. Basically got rid of all carby temptations and just stocked my kitchen with proteins and fats.

This. I'm a big fan of looking at my monthly stats instead of daily stats. I expect that during the holiday parties I'll eat over maintenance. After holidays, I normally resume back to normal. I also expect that during the spring and summer months I find myself wanting to be outside more, which results in me being more…

What a great pic! And I must say that it's pretty inspiring that you were able to lead such an active life despite the hand you were dealt! Anyways, I hope you don't resort to appetite suppressants. I have found that in most situations, strategy trumps lack of willpower/motivation and hopelessness. I'll highlight some tips…

Did the doctor say it was Osteochondritis Dissecans? Or were you w/ congenital hip dysplasia? Sorry about your you situation! However, I'm curious as to why you think appetite suppressants are the answer?

That and a strssful desk job.

Denial for me. I've lost weight before. So when I wasn't too overweight, I sort of gave myself permission to eat unhealthy again. As I looked in the mirror, I kept gaining weight but kept telling myself I didn't look too bad until 45 pounds later, I could hardly fit into any of my clothes.

Lots of tasty processed food. Chips, cake, doughnuts galore! Oh so good.

It's true that excess calories will lead to weight gain. However, calories are just a part of the story. Calorie quality, hormonal responses to certain macronutrients and stress levels, and activity level are among other factors that play a role in fat loss as well. Fruit contains fiber, water, and are nutrient dense. Most…

I hear ya. Stupid body eating up hard earned precious muscle.
