I have worked up to 5ks but plan to do a half marathon this year. I talked to my dietician and she said she has lots of WLS patients who go on to successfully complete marathons! Just like anyone, take it slow. When I talk to people who have been running for years they all tell me to take at least 1.5 years to work up to…

I find things that are really cold or hot are good as it takes longer to eat them and I seem to savour it more. Hot chocolate, popsicles, ice cream. I also do better with homemade desserts. I will make a half batch of cookies (and make them small) and keep them in the freezer.

I love running in the rain! No music, just the sound of rain is so calming and enjoyable. I don't even mind when I land in the puddles as a good pair of socks make the run comfortable.

I always have to ice my knees after runs from knee pain. It helps. I have also been told that if I do weight training on my legs it will build the muscle around the knee and reduce the knee pain...but I haven't implemented that advice yet.

Good for you! Many people just allow others to treat them poorly, I am glad you had the confidence to leave. You are a good role model for your daughter as well.

It is hard when we have unsupportive parents...or parents who cant support us in the way we need them to. Don't bring up your fitness with them, it is clearly a topic you can't discuss together. And remember it takes 2 to fight. If they start a fight over fitness you just assert yourself "I'm not comfortable discussing…

If putting a band on our stomach that made us sweat more worked, then no one would have a large stomach. If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is!

I don't use recipes for breakfast, I just eat healthy foods. Cereal, toast, oatmeal, yogurt, smoothies, fruit, cottage cheese, eggs etc

It's from the book "The rules of normal eating" I highly recommend this book! It's not about eating and how to lose weight - it's about developing a normal healthy relationship with food. Something that I think many of us WLS patients struggle with.

I live in Ontario and had it done 8 month ago. I'm down 110lbs and very excited about that! I have a ways to go and have started to slow down and plateau but that is okay. I am a lot stronger now and can run 4 miles :)

Amazing!!!!

I am 8 months out and my weight loss has slowed significantly. At 5 months I hit a 1 month plateau and since 7 months I'm grateful for a 1lb loss each week. I do think I have started to eat more treats than usual so I am working on cutting that back which will hopefully help. I'm down 110lbs and am still 70lbs overweight.…

I once read in a self help book that "overeaters are afraid of feeling hunger and undereaters are afraid to feel full." It made me realize that I was stuffing myself before a shift because I was afraid I would be hungry at X time and not be able to eat. I started to just prep myself for those feelings. "I might get a…

I usually just add brown sugar and a splash of milk but I think I need to get a little more creative!

This is an excellent point. In a 10k that would only be 3 minutes faster which is nothing really. Especially my first one. I just came back from a run: 10:1, 10:1, 10:1, 20:1. I hadn't intended to run a 20 minute interval but a walker was threatening to pass me and I just couldn't allow that. It felt a little more natural…

My only pet peeve is about the facility itself. One of the rooms upstairs where I do step class is incredibly hot - even with air conditioning. When I finish the workout sometimes I feel ill from how hot it is.

Stunning!!

Exactly! All the protein and calcium in ice cream is good for me ;)

omg I am so relieved to hear this. I was afraid you would all say once a week! Since my stomach is smaller I have small portions and the treats are usually 200-300 calories. I probably get an oh-so-good 800 calorie treat once or twice a month and eat it over 2 days. Thanks so much!

How overweight are you? I was 90lbs over a healthy BMI when I started. I've lost 15lbs in the process. I can now run for 30minutes!! Don't let your weight stop you, but DO listen to your body! For your shin pain a few things to consider: 1) Make sure you are doing a proper warm up before running. 2) Since you are having…

I like to challenge comments like this in a casual manner. Asked with sincere curiosity "What do you mean by that?" If they are being a jerk then they will get embarrassed or stumble over their words trying to defend themselves and probably not make these comments again to you (yay) or more likely they will clarify what…

You look amazing but I am more impressed with your running!! Being able to run 10+ miles is so inspiring!! Can I ask you a question? Did you ever find that training for longer distances messed with your weight loss? I've heard when people start to train for HM and beyond that weight loss is harder to achieve. (this is for…

That is very impressive!!!! Congratulations on your hard work!

If you work on various leg weights you will build the muscle around the knee and there will be less pain. I would have a PT show you proper technique. I think walking is a great workout. Pick a comfortable pace and every 3 minutes speed walk for 1 minute. You can also play with the incline for a great workout.'

To drop down and fit into my Old Navy jeans size 20. I'm wearing the 22s and they are hanging off me yet I cant quite get into the 20s
-
That just because you are 90lbs overweight doesn't mean you can't run!! I'm up to 8 minute intervals and have shed 15lbs in the process.

What evidence do you have that you are running "funny" or incorrectly? Do you think a 6 year old is really qualified to analyse your running technique? Sometimes a single comment sticks with us for far longer than it should. Time to let it go. Your run is likely "normal" and you look just like everyone else. Sweaty, tired…

Also consider prevention: -Make sure you are running in proper shoes. Go to a running store and have a gait analysis done. -A proper warm up and cool down is important -Good stretching afterward holding each stretch for at least 30 seconds.

I want to run! I can run 5 minute intervals right now and will be at 10 minute intervals within a month. I want to run a 5k :)
