For me, logging has been the perfect tool. The idea is to get a calorie goal from MFP or some other sound source, following it reasonably closely for 4-6 weeks (whole menstrual cycles for those who have them, but I'm betting you, like me, have put that in the past). The average weekly results from that 4-6 week experience…

There are various ways to estimate exercise outside of MFP, but I have to admit I've never seen anything specific to a mini-stepper. Maybe you have a clearer handle on it, but my best guess would be that it's burn more calories than something like a walking pad, but substantially fewer than a full-blown stair climber…

The thread Brisco linked about strength training includes some strength programs that require minimal or no equipment, mainly bodyweight exercise. That can be a good starting point, before laying out money. If you purchase weights, check out what may be available locally (via whatever social or want-ad kind of site you…

The closest substitute now is to find a compatible thread/group over in the Motivation and Support or Challenges part of the Community, and join in there. There are a few threads in other areas with a similar support/accountability kind of vibe, too, but they're more concentrated in those parts of the Community.

You would get better feedback by starting your own thread, rather than replying to one that isn't really about the same topic. As a generality, if a person's weight has been entirely stable for literally several months - not slow loss, just ups and downs in the same range - then either the person is eating at maintenance…

@springlering62 If PP is eating 35% protein at 1200 calories, that's 105g protein. That would be at or above 1g per pound of LBM for many average-sized women. No diss to the chicken breast idea, or the cooking method, and definitely not to the idea of getting ample protein . . . but 105g/day doesn't seem crazy low. 1200…

Hours X 3.6 X average watts is a reasonable estimating formula for cycling calories. The power meter would measure the average watts.

Hello and welcome! I started in here at about the same age (59 in my case), lost to a healthy weight and improved my nutrition, and have stayed at a healthy weight since, now age 69. Progress is possible. I'm cheering for you to succeed: The quality of life improvement is more than worth the effort!

Hello and welcome! In my experience, if we commit to the process sincerely, and stick with it, we can do it. (I lost about 50 pounds at age 59-60, am 69 now and still at a healthy weight. All my health markers improved, in fact are all now in the normal range. I didn't have diabetes, but others here who have had diabetes…

Another thing getting under my skin recently that I'm seeing super frequently online is variations on "chair yoga for seniors". The ads feature women who look around my age (69) that I'd describe as very thin, and - how to say this without body-shaming? - who appear to have less muscle mass than I personally prefer to…

Given your very complex mix of health issues, your best bet would be to check in with your doctor and/or a registered dietitian before doing anything major. In general, being weight stable for a 3-5 month time period means a person has on average been eating their current maintenance calories. "Weight stable" includes the…

Curious why you're calculating it . . . well, estimating it, really, since the BMR and any fitness tracker figures are just sophisticated estimates. Do you sync your tracker to MFP, and have negative adjustments enabled in MFP? That should, in theory, do the math to tell you how much to eat. As NotJustNowForever points…

I like my Garmin, but they tend to be more expensive than Fitbit, though both companies offer a range of price points. The Garmins I've had have been nearly bulletproof, and I don't baby them. It's only a wide generality, but people with athletic hobbies trend toward Garmins for the variety of workouts they'll give…

I weigh the oil, including oil in spray cans**, and log all of it as something I ate. The only exception would be when there's oil left in the pan - that can't have come from the food being fried - that I can pour off or wipe off and weigh.**** ** Put the can on the scale. Zero/tare it. Spray your pan or food or whatever.…

It'sa real thing. No solid scientific evidence of the claimed benefits, but a number of possible risks. Probably one of those alt-health practices there's no likelihood of talking devotees out of.

Oh, I forgot, @springlering62, there was another popsicle lady before this one. The previous one was more adventurous in using herbs/spices in her pops. That's also fertile territory to explore. Thyme and melon is a great combo, for example. Fresh ginger and almost any fruit. Etc.

Fast weight loss and improved fitness aren't natural bedfellows. Neither is fast weight loss and improved appearance. It scares me when someone talks about short term timelines, like 21 days - I'm fearing that you might be talking about fast weight loss. I hope not. Moderate weight loss is better for health, appearance,…

@smoss1966 , listen to @springlering62 up there. That's the straight story, and a complete one. If you've been averaging decent weight loss when you look at the trend over the last 4-6 weeks, you're golden. Normal weight loss is ups and downs with a generally downward many-week trend. Fast fat loss of 2 pounds a week is…

So far, yes, I have managed to avoid knee surgery. I don't recall the exact date, but it was well over 10 years ago when I was having a discussion with an orthopedic surgeon about my osteoarthritis and torn meniscus. I know I was somewhere in my 50s. (I'm 69 now.) The orthopedist told me that knee surgery was in my future,…

Hello, Ash, and welcome! If the results you want are primarily the weight loss, that's going to require managing your calorie intake. It's normal for weight to fluctuate, even if fat loss is going on at a good rate. Our bodies can be up to 60%+ water, and that - plus varied amounts of waste in the digestive tract from day…

Well, if you're under 18, you're not supposed to be here, according to the rules. For anyone of any age, the routine for gaining muscle is to follow a good progressive strength training program, eat in a small calorie surplus, and get good overall nutrition (especially but not exclusively ample protein). Then, be patient:…

Company's in Lithuania, reportedly. But honestly, all the other language seems like idiomatic English. Looking at the ads as a totality, several of them start with variations on "I was so sad because I couldn't afford the product that made my friend lose weight effortlessly" idea, then tout a sale that made it affordable.…

@springlering62, I'm lazy (though I do have some popsicle molds around here someplace). But I'm also lucky: There's a woman - married to the artisan baker whose soft pretzel sticks I'm addicted to - who makes fruit ice pops and sells them at the farmers market. Most market days she has maybe 8 different flavors, and they…

One campaign that is vexing me lately is a bunch of stupid-long internet ads for a probiotic supplement. Different ones are pitched at different target audiences. One or two even have some guy talking about how the supplement saved his (menopausal or peri-) wife and maybe even his marriage. Some actually laud the fact that…

Do you have a fitness tracker synced to MFP?

Dittoes. Perfection isn't realistic. "Pretty good on average most of the time" is plenty good enough, and more achievable, IMO. "Gradually better over a period of time" is a reasonable path to get there. I'm a big believer in making the easiest-to-follow possible plan that gradually heads toward goals. Doing that requires…

Congratulations on reaching goal weight: That's wonderful! Now comes the hard part. 😆 Okay, really just kidding: Maintenance is achievable. I've been maintaining a healthy weight for 9+ years since losing around 50 pounds, and if a hedonistic aging hippie flake like me - a woman with strictly limited willpower/discipline -…

@2greggs, welcome (back)! I'd say this group is lightly active - there have been several posts in the past few days from some of the more frequent chatty people (me included), but there are also folks still in the MFP Community who post more occasionally, plus a few who have some difficult things going on in their lives…

What is your protein goal (in grams), your current body weight, and your goal body weight? Are you athletically active? I'm asking because it isn't super unusual to see people have an unnecessarily high protein goal for one reason or another, and I'm saying that as a person who believes eating relatively higher protein is…

There is. It's in the cardiovascular section of the exercise database, the only part of the database that estimates calorie burn. For normal reps/sets workouts with short rests between sets, record the whole session time as "Strength training (weight lifting, weight training)".
