Prefer to go alone. Then I'm not waiting on someone else to show up, I get in and out faster, and focus more. It's actually the best way to work out IMO.

skip the machines. Stick to free weights. There are many online resources to help you. bodybuilding.com is one, they also have videos for all the exercises so you do them properly.

Things that you can do instead. 1. Hike uphill 2. Climb stairs 3. Shadow boxing 4. Swimming 5. Jumping jacks 6. Burpees 7. Dancing All just as good cardio as running if you push. More fun too!
