Dude, you are awesome. I've been running since 2003. I only recently learned that most runners are in discomfort/pain/wanting to stop during their runs. Wow, I'm normal! I'm actually pushing harder now, having learned that, and I'm more in love with running than ever. I am also still Queen of the 11 Minute Mile ;)

When my running shoes are just right, they disappear on my feet. I never think about them. If they are super loose, you are at risk for blisters and injuries, both the long term overuse kind and the ankle-breaking kind. Go get a fitting. Note that if you normally wear narrows or wides you may need to find a store that…

An ice bath immediately post-workout is great on a hot day. Best I ever felt during my first year of running.

Sushi, yum. Exercise a little moderation and get what you want. My impression of Japanese cuisine in general is that it is about more than packing in the food: part of eating is enjoying the artistry/presentation, atmosphere, company, flavors, textures, etc. It makes an art out of extending and savoring the good stuff. The…

Go and get a sports bra fitting at a retailer that specializes in women's athletic clothing, such as Title Nine, or an independent lingerie store. Be prepared to hear that your current band size is too large; sports bras need to be super snug. The Enell sports bra is well-known as being great for the well-endowed. Moving…

Try Athleta. They are more expensive, but the quality is excellent and they size things for an athletic women's build.

Another outdoors girl here. Thousands and thousands of miles of roads available, starting at my front door. Trails, hills, lakes, sun, wind, rain, snow. I can take my dog. It's never the same twice. Why work out indoors when I can be outside?

My understanding from reading reviews prior to purchasing my Charge HR is that this type of heart rate monitoring is still new technology. Early adopters of any technology generally have to put up with some quirks. Reports across the net say that Fitbits are good for getting a resting heart rate and/or mild activity, but…

Random tip: Avoid artificial sweeteners. If you lay off the white sugar/HFCS/processed crap, your palate will (eventually) reset and things like fruits, vegetables, and even milk will be plenty sweet.

Austin, Texas. I've been meaning to go for a once-a-week, mid-week trail run ever since I lost my job back in September, but never seem to get around to it. I would love to hook up with someone who would also want to do some trail runs! We have some nice regional trails and it's not like I don't have the time. I tend to…

Be gentle with yourself and with your body. If a friend of yours had surgery and was worried about her weight during recovery, what would you tell her? You would tell her to take care of herself and put her recovery first. If you start feeling cooped up, depressed, or anxious due to a lack of exercise, be sure to let your…

Sugar addiction is a thing. Back in 2002, after a family member was diagnosed as hypoglycemic, I realized that sugar was really making me sick, too. I would crave a sweet, eat it, and crash. When I was a teenager my doctor thought that I had some sort of immune deficiency because I would get complications from…

Hi, I just found this group/thread today and I'm hopping in. Goal for January is 60 miles. I did 2 yesterday and 2.8 this morning despite feeling crappy. Also starting to wonder if it's time for new shoes, blah.

Hi all, I'm Lynn and I just found this group. I've been running for 12 years now and, although I'm not fast and haven't even done more than 5 miles at once, I have always loved it. This is the year when I want to: 1. Get faster: I have my eyes set on a sub-30 5K (after 12 years I am still Queen of the 11-minute mile!). 2.…

Yikes, first post! This thread has been super helpful... and I'm definitely looking to add some friends. I finished a university degree last December and went from bike commuting + walking miles a day around campus, to being unemployed, going on a long bicycle tour, having a desk job, and now being unemployed again. The…
