What's your diet's limits? Calorie goal? Watching your sodium?

The only time I avoid particular items at a sushi restaurant is when I'm pregnant.

I love sushi, my favourites are salmon sashimi, dynamite rolls, California rolls, tomago rolls and gomae salad.

We make sushi at home quite regularly. We LOVE it. We stay away from fried stuff and use low sodium soy. It's all pretty healthy because it's fresh but rice, sesame seeds and avocados are pretty high in calories so you do have to just pay attention so you can stay within your calorie limits!

Boston Roll and California roll are both pretty low cal choices, assuming you don't like to smother them in Yum Yum sauce like I do. XD.

I eat veggie rolls and edamame, and they're both pretty reasonable. But then I'm a vegetarian, so what else would I eat? OK, veggie tempura, but only once in a while.

Sushi is something you'd have to consider an indulgence for the most part. The rolls are made with a sugar rice combination and there can be some pretty high cal sauces on some rolls. The California rolls are made with mayo. There are a lot of vegetable rolls that are really good though. :) The safest options are sashimi! Just pieces of raw fish. Dip it in a little soy sauce and OMG yum. Sushi itself isn't too bad but they're made with little balls of rice so they'll be higher in calories than sashimi.

Other dishes at sushi restaurants can be good though. Edamame beans, salad and the rice bowls have a lot of veg! But be careful of the tempura, it's super oily.

My husband worked as a sushi chef and he saw first hand what was gonna be fattening since starting my weight loss he basically told me I could only have sashimi if I was being REALLY careful. But I just save the cals for dinner and eat whatever I want from the sushi restaurant.

    Hope I helped!

There shouldn't be mayo in California rolls.

I go for plain salmon, typically... Usually sashimi, or maki rolls.

Why would you not eat sushi?
Go for the kind with less rice, and eat smaller portion.
I usually prepare sushi at home, that way I can control the ingredients more.
Personally I love it and don't think there is anything bad with eating it :) (in moderation ofc)

spicy tuna! try to stay away from the fried versions that a stuffed with cream cheese and/or mayo. Also, if you're not watching your sodium, a nice cup of miso is a good addition.

I tried to eat some nigiri. The sushi on top of a bit of rice. I must not be a raw sushi person cause I thought it was so tasteless. I didn't want to add soy sauce because I know the sodium content is really high. In the end I just had a California roll. I'll probably stick to that or edemame/veggie roll for next time.

Sashimi is my favorite! Then unagi. California and rainbow rolls are also good.

Sweet potato roll, spicy salmon roll, spicy tuna roll
All delicious to be sure! The spicy rolls are some of my faves, but they aren't the healthiest. The sweet potato is almost always tempura fried, and the spicy salmon/tuna/etc are made with fried crunchies and mayo.
White tuna nigiri (fish on top, rice on the bottom) is one of my favorites, very mild and creamy tasting. The vegetable rolls aren't too bad: oshinko, which is a type of pickle, is tangy. Tamago, which is a sweet egg custard, is also good as sashimi, nigiri or in a roll. Futo maki has a whole bunch of stuff in it, from carrots to imitation crab, but nothing fried and no caloric sauces.
If you need 'that delicious sauce' (whatever it may be...spicy mayo is my fave), get it on the side and dip one of the healthier options in it.
The other folks above are right: edamame is your healthiest (as far as macros) option, and just try to steer clear of the fried stuff if nothing else.

    Everything <3

On a serious note though...sashimi and non sauce rolls w/ veggies and some type of lean fish are my favorite. I like fatty fish like salmon for sashimi!

The only thing I don't eat is eel - because I think it tastes nasty.

If you want to pick lower-cal selections, avoid items with fried components like spider rolls, items with mayonnaise or 'spicy' sauces (usually mayo-based), and items with cream cheese.

If you want to go even lower, pick sashimi or if you want some rice do chirashi and moderate the amount of rice you eat. The savings in rice calories can be substantial.

Pretty much correct here. Except for the taste of Eel. One of my favorites.

    It's all about moderation.

What do I eat!? Everything !!! Lol

    No tempura or cream cheese.
I eat Unagi shashimi and as much Escolar as I can. Edamame.
If someone says "sushi" I'd skip all snacks and lunch and gorge myself. Lol. But really. That's my diet bugaboo. Lol.

Chirashi! Best bang for your buck, too.

    Sushi, yum.

Exercise a little moderation and get what you want. My impression of Japanese cuisine in general is that it is about more than packing in the food: part of eating is enjoying the artistry/presentation, atmosphere, company, flavors, textures, etc. It makes an art out of extending and savoring the good stuff. The best quote I ever heard about food was "You eat first with your eyes." Limit your intake, and relish those bites from all perspectives. Enjoy some edamame if you feel the need to fill up on something.

    Now I want sushi.

Anything sashimi or nigiri. Some of the rolls tend to carry more calories, but if you can fit it into your plan - eat away.
