I've taken them in the past for months on end and not noticed any changes nor felt any different. Perhaps I'm deficient in something, but how can I find out? I had a forty year health check recently and my tests were all okay, they told me to eat more fruit and vegetables based on the information I'd given them about my…

Brilliant post Lisa, explains why I do indeed get hungry quick after high gi carbs

happened to a friend of mine, she read too many of the wrong articles online and concluded she had a potassium deficiency - overdid it with the supplements and ended up at the doctors.

"can white bread make you gain weight even if your under on the calories?" No, I've not heard of any food that can do this. And yes, I'd stop eating white starches if they're not agreeing with you.

I applaud that! Don't let any teetotal evangelists criticize you for it!

so what if it does? are we all expected to be as fit as our genetic potential will allow? Just being realistic, for a lot of us we can enjoy one beer without it leading to another and ending up food bingeing.

the article says: "It’s not necessarily beer but too many calories that can turn your trim waistline into a belly that protrudes over your pants. Any kind of calories -- whether from alcohol, sugary beverages, or oversized portions of food -- can increase belly fat. However, alcohol does seem to have a particular…

sorry to hear it - I should also have added you need a boss who doesn't notice/mind. :-)

What's stopping you? You just need some work colleagues who are up for having lunch out somewhere that serves beer.

Some great advice posted already, just to add my 2 pence worth: Diet trumps everything you can do in the gym (certainly in terms of fat loss), so you've got to get that right first. As for workout frequency, intensity, and duration, I would look for something that is sustainable for you in the long term i.e. don't commit…

I get days like that too - weekends are usually worse. I've followed various recommendations to manage this, but not found the magic formula yet. I think part of the problem is that I was used to always eating when I wanted, and forgot what the sensation of hunger was like. I think it's natural to start feeling hungry from…

Most actors seem to do split routines, and it would appear that more IS definitely more: http://www.popworkouts.com/henry-cavill-workout-superman/ http://www.popworkouts.com/chris-hemsworth-workout-thor-too-big/ http://www.popworkouts.com/mark-wahlberg-workout-diet/ According to the above, Wahlberg's one gained him 40lb of…

I cut back from a pint after work to 330ml, and now have it about every other day, and I also sometimes have a pint with lunch at work. I log it and fit it in with my calories and still lose weight. It does mean I have to be more careful with everything else I eat that day, but it's worth it. Sustaining a no beer diet for…

Thanks guys for the analysis, especially to Sam for going through the citations. I enjoy my workouts so would certainly miss them if I dropped to one every 14 days. My current modified knocks-me-for-dead stronglifts routine every 5-6 days is working for me, but as soon as I plateau I'll look to change, perhaps to a split…

"Which is more effective for building lean muscle? " - there are good arguments for both approaches, but dedicated long-term lifters usually do split routines. I agree with all the previous answers, the only thing I would suggest is to add an extra rest day here and there if you need it.

As I recall the first part of it was quite interesting, but it was the latter part that annoyed me - undercooking the steak so it required more calories to digest - for heavens sake just eat a smaller steak!

I actually find lifting weights once a week can be effective, I usually do a full body weights routine and take at least 4 days rest between, but sometimes I've rested a whole week and often found I've lifted more on the next session. My conclusion was that you might be able to progress faster doing split routines through…

looks great to me, weights and hiit. Make sure you're not running too large a calorie deficit or you will still lose muscle, and watch out for symptoms of overtraining. When it comes to exercise and calorie deficits I'm a bit of a 'less is more' guy, because it's so much more sustainable for the long term.

unless you've been taking loads of drugs don't worry about it - detox for is a myth designed to sell books and magazines.

I saw that program and found it a bit disappointing. They showed the enormous lengths people could go to to cook meals that have say 10% less calories in it - all the time I was thinking "why not just keep it simpler and eat 10% less?" The Fat vs Sugar Horizon program I found far more interesting - where identical twins…

cheat days don't work for me at least - I can do cheat meals at most. I tried the 5:2 intermittent fasting diet and found that on the non-fasting days (effectively 5 cheat days a week) I could easily eat more than enough to wipe out my weekly deficit. I find the discipline of keeping to a small deficit every day easiest.

thanks last few posters you have made some great points. I was turning the thing around in my head and imagining if a woman had posted that skinny guys were inelegant (the thing I've always battled with personally), I wouldn't like it either (if they'd only said they liked bodybuilders I wouldn't have batted an eyelid).

okay, I was hoping this thread would tail off, but it seems to be out of my hands - and I have thought about asking the moderators to delete it, but it wouldn't really be fair to people who've obviously spent a lot of time reading and contributing to it - especially the Shakespeare guys response - that was a true work of…

One thing no one has mentioned is the environmental impact of the kind of intensive cattle farming needed by macdonalds. Eat local, eat in season!

I managed to kick the habit by avoiding the vending machines at work for two weeks, after that the desire drops and I can walk past them without feeling tempted. I still have 1 sugar in my coffee and sprinkle two spoons on my shredded wheat in the morning - it is just a food after all, and not the devil that some make it…

I also recommend San Pellegrino mineral water, the only mineral water I'm willing to pay for.

yep, zero calorie drinks regularly rescue me from temptation - like at the cinema last week where coke zero saved me from the popcorn.

Mike Matthews did a youtube video on 'fasted training', saying it was particularly good for stubborn fat - something to do with different blood circulation in a fasted state. It's not an area I've really looked into nor tried, but might be worth investigating. When I'm down to my stubborn fat I'll give a try.

nice one! mini goals are great!
