what happened to tom cruise's chest?
Specifically, what challenges do we face when try to maintain muscle mass into our 50s and beyond. Re tom cruise, compare his torso in mission impossible 1 and in mission impossible 4, something doesn't look right at all with his pecs in the latter, and can't believe he wouldn't be doing everything in his power to keep his…

are squats overrated?
Don't have any specific criticisms of squats, just didn't find them as 'life-changing' as others seem to, and found fast short-distance running and cycling just as good for building up legs.

just wanna look good dressed?
Forget the sixpack, much better I think to have fuller cheeks and still cast an elegant shadow.

advice on ethical/environmental food shopping
I've minimised my meat consumption and switched to organic dairy, but wondering if 'organic' food really is scalable? Could the worlds population be fed entirely with organic farming methods? If not, for minimal carbon footprint, consuming intensively farmed grains may be the best staple food.

How old were you when you first drank alcohol?
I was 5 or 6, I recall my dad letting me have sips of his whiskey/wine/beer.

Sugar tax to be imposed in UK
Arggh, just been announced today: http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2016/mar/16/will-a-sugar-tax-actually-work-budget So now poor me who consumes sugar responsibly is going to have to pay more in tax :-( Seriously though I think it'll be punishing the poor unfairly. When I've been poor a can of sprite was one of the…

serious back of knees pain after walking 15 miles
I never normally walk (or run) more than 5 miles ever, but last Saturday I walked 15 miles (around city streets - it's a long story). My feet were getting sore after 5 miles (as they usually do), but after 8 my knees really started to hurt, in the middle of them where the joint is, and at the back and sides on the rear -…

a week of headaches and feeling rubbish, but I've quit caffeine!
I no longer feel the need for coffee, which is great, but I miss it. Anyone got any experience of a 'safe' number of coffees (I'm taking single espresso shots) to have any a day to not get addicted again (I was having 6 a day). When I say addicted, I mean feeling rubbish and having a headache if I don't have the coffee.

has anyone actually observed change in muscle gain when varying protien intake?
We've all seen the recommendation of 1 gram / lb of body weight, and the referenced studies on protein needs, but has anyone actually observed differences in themselves? I used to lift weights and get about 70-80g of protein a day, and still saw muscle gain.

grrr, face getting too thin, but still have belly fat
Getting more and more people commenting on my thinness, and I've always had quite a narrow face so I guess I'm looking a bit gaunt (my photo was from three months ago, when I was around 3 kilos heavier). The thing is I can still pinch an inch on my belly, and although not noticeble when I'm dressed (unless wearing a tight…

will your body store fat after a 600 calorie meal no matter what its macro ratios?
I see a lot of people saying carbs are bad because they provoke insulin production which tells your body to convert unneeded sugar to fat, but what happens to the fat you eat in a meal if your body doesn't need it for energy either? Does that not get stored straight as fat, and without the mucking about with insulin? As I…

anti-gym snobbery
Does anyone else find, that if they mention they go to the gym, some people will respond by taking on a superior air and say things like "I prefer to exercise in the fresh air" or "why waste money on a gym membership when all you need is some running shoes and the great outdoors", or "I find treadmills so boring - can't…

ever worked out at home in your birthday suit?
All I can say is try it, it feels awesome - but avoid star jumps.

When your mother tells you (with a worried tone) that you look thin.
I'm still 20% body fat (down from 25), and have slightly increased muscle mass, but I got this recently from my mother. I don't want to worry her, but I'm determined to get my body fat down to 15%. I guess a lot of mothers are like this, a friend of mine tells me that the mere fact that he doesn't live at home and eat his…

what are the main muscles stronglifts leaves behind?
I notice my trapezius lagging behind the rest of my upper body - wondering whether to add shrugs - or will the deadlifts and rows them as the weight increases - if my grip doesn't go first.

Training frequency - less is more?
I read this article a few years back and was recently reminded of it: https://www.painscience.com/articles/strength-training-frequency.php The conclusion is that you can achieve a great deal just going to the gym once a week, doing a couple of minutes high intensity cardio, and just two sets of the usual push/pull/legs…

bulking in winter and summer, cutting in spring and autumn?
Anyone have views on if particular seasons suit bulking or cutting better? I'm on a cut at the moment, and am sure I'm feeling the cold more than normal now we're into autumn (could be the fat loss, or the calorie deficit, or both?) - and fearing catching colds/flu as there's more around this time of year. Winter seems…

when did this obsession for women having big butts start, and why?
I see a lot of questions from women wanting to get their posteriors bigger, getting advice on doing squats etc, and it leaves me wondering when did this obsession start? 20 years ago we had the likes of Cindy Crawford and Pamela Anderson, and none of them had disproportionately large backsides. Personally I'm not a fan of…

Rate my free weights routine
I do a modified stronglifts style 5x5 routine, with safety modifications because I don't have a rack/stands, and I workout alone. I just want peoples views if I'm doing the right exercises, not missing any important ones. I do it in this order: 1. Chin-ups - doing 5 sets to failure, currently hitting reps: 8/4/3/2/2. I…

pounds vs kilos - geek alert! Anyone switched units after using this forum?
I used to think entirely in kilos, but since joining this forum am increasingly thinking in lbs. The 1lb measure does seem to be a nice small but tangible unit for body weight and for dumbbell/barbell weights. When using kilos you invariably have to start going decimal and talking about 0.5 kilos. Doing maths with kilos is…

Stronglifts - all the abs workout you need?
A lot of people say this, but I have my doubts if you're aiming for a 6 pack. I'm still at 20% body fat so can't judge for myself. Be interested to hear from others what state stronglifts left their abs in though.

when to get new clothes?
At what point on a weight loss journey do people buy new better fitting clothes? It seems a waste to do it when you're half-way to your goal.

Getting your 5-a-day, do you have to get your micronutrients every day, or is weekly enough?
Here in the UK we have a government health 5-a-day campaign to get people eating 5 portions of fresh fruit and vegetables a day (although now people are saying it should be 7-a-day). I think the goal is to ensure people get all the micronutrients they need - and also has the bonus of people having less capacity to eat junk…

Best breakfast cereals?
I've been looking into the nutrition info on a lot of the cereals I normally have, and it's quite interesting - All Bran looks to be the winner for me, it has 14% protein! All others are around 10% protein. It also has your RDA of fibre in one serving (my size serving) - goodbye bloatedness - hello regularity! The only…

best male routines for pure aesthetics (not strength)?
I'm doing a modified stronglifts program at the moment, but feel that it is over emphasizing leg work (I'm already happy with my legs), and doesn't have any hardcore ab work (I know the squats and deadlifts are good for the core muscles, but it cant replace things like weighted leg raises). There's only so much my body can…

Catching colds more frequently while weight training on a deficit?
I definitely notice that it takes more days to recover between workouts while on a calorie deficit, but I also wonder about the impact on the immune system. I'm lucky enough to only catch a cold about once a year, but I've started an unusually intense (for me anyway) weights and cardio regime that I plan to continue for…

can you spot steroid users? Which hollywood actors do you think use them?
Just wondering what the giveaway signs are. I see in a lot of Hollywood movies these days, some physiques look a bit too much, when compared to male leads from movies before steroids e.g. compare Hugh Jackman as Wovlerine to Kirk Douglas in Spartacus. Or Daniel Craig as Bond vs Sean Connery (who even had an unwaxed chest!)

would you consider liposuction?
If you've got the money and stubborn fat I don't see a problem with it. Could be a solution to getting decent abs without the gaunt face many people get at that low body fat %.

Just eating the calories required to maintain your desired weight - rather than a larger deficit?
Whatever your ideal weight, once you get there you'll want to be eating the correct amount of calories to maintain it right? So why not start just eating that amount of calories now? In theory your weight should eventually meet this ideal - it may take longer, but at least you'll be getting used to the calorie intake…
