I know how you feel, always battled with the dreaded skinny fat myself. Have you seen Mike Matthews video on th subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZLwZRD7BWc I think you really need to get precise on your diet, at macronutrient level. I find a 15% calorie deficit, really cutting most of that from fat too (so no…

Nothing better than having a target, 6 months is a great timescale. Keep updating your progress!

Can you lose weight without feeling hungry? In my experience, yes and no, some days when I'm busy I just don't think about it, and don't feel hungry - other days (usually weekends) I struggle. I suspect getting my meal frequency/quantity/timing right will help a lot, but I've not found my magic formula yet. What I try to…

Bit thin that article, not sure how it changes anything. Yes, many things influence people's metabolism, but it still comes down to energy consumed < energy expended. As scotty would say: "you can'ne change the laws to physics"

:) I do indeed feel like I'm eating cat food!

if you just want to maintain then I see no reason to do something every day. Just do whole body once a week, or push/pull/legs split three times a week.

have a small can of tuna a day. Tuna seems to be the highest protein and lowest calorie food I can find, and similar price per gram of protein to whey powders.
-
The key thing the physiotherapist advised me was not being too sedentary, avoid going straight to the sofa after work and take lots of breaks from you desk when you are at work.
-
I can't do it without whey powder, I find I need a substantial amount of meat in at least two meals a day otherwise.
-
:) Good point. With experience you can differentiate between the 'I can't be bothered days' from the 'my muscles don't feel quite recovered' days.

I've had RSI from 8 hours a day computer work, it came down to bad posture. I think exercise generally is very helpful, and a lot of people swear by pilates for helping with RSI.

Listen to your body, if you're struggling with your workouts (not improving, or getting worse), or feeling more tired generally then add more rest days. Don't just follow the advice of the routine you're doing.
-
sounds like you're going in different directions, and he might be feeling the same about you, and posting questions on forums about his 'crazy vegetarian so' who's trying to get him to follow her. No one on the internet really knows enough about your situation to be giving advice. But if one or both of you are miserable in…

Only fad diets that are severely restrictive on what you can eat would, e.g. keto, bananadiet,... (and so you simply can't 'stomach' eating excess calories) save you from needing to watch portion sizes and count calories - I think they are really bad unbalanced diets to follow, but a lot people swear by them and I'm sure…

very true, no one cleaned after themselves in the gym I used to go to. I now workout at home, so not a problem anymore, but I do feel a bit lonely working out now :'(

you should check out durian rider and freelee's videos on youtube, they have some very interesting ideas.

Lemon juice and sesame seeds on the salad make it more interesting. Also adding some slightly sharper leaves like rocket can help too. The more expensive tomatoes are definitely much tastier too.

who cares? anyone who doesn't appreciate being misled or cheated. You could say 'who cares' about what Lance Armstrong did (the thicker end of the wedge certainly, but the same wedge). When Men's Health run an article on how Jackman got in shape for Wolverine, you would hope that it is truthful and if steroids were used…

Some people don't come close to their full lifting potential? I don't think it's that grim, a grim reality is what's going on in the middle east at the moment, let's get some perspective.

Where did this come from? According to everywhere else I've looked, broccoli is only 2.8% protein. I depend very much on whey supplements.

totally agree, nothing like the molasses taste with coffee. and seriously, the calories from a few cups of coffee a day are few, there are other areas where you can make much more effective calorie cuts.

weight training adds muscle to your body, muscles burn calories 24/7 even when your asleep. I recommend doing a bit of both.

Good point, 'linear progression' was the phrase I was missing. I wonder, once you've got all your newbie gains, and hit your first plateau, how much more weight could you expect to be able to achieve? Could you still expect to eventually double your bench press weight for example? or just increase it by 20%? What would be…

The 'energy = force x distance' formula can be used to work out the calories expended to lift a weight (it doesn't take into account energy lost through body heat and other inefficiencies though, so the really calorie burn is probably 1.5 to 2 times the answer from the formula) checkout this other thread on the same…

For the level of exercise you describe I would put 'lightly active' in this calculator http://www.calculator.net/calorie-calculator.html Some people like to just put 'sedentary', and then add every exercise they do, others prefer to average it out over the week. I don't think there's any right or wrong way here, as long as…

great investment, I got a set of dumbells 20 years ago, and still using them today - one of my longest possessions. I recommend ebay for getting them (and exercise equipment generally) - they sell for half the price of new.

the beauty of this method is that you don't get to your target weight and then have to start eating more, I think a lot people feel liberated on reaching their goal weight, start eating a bit too much to celebrate, and then they're back to yo-yo dieting. With the method you describe, you don't have to change anything about…

glad I was able to offer a useful angle on this issue. I wish there was a simple formula for adding in the bodies inefficiencies to the equation, there is a lot of energy still lost in balancing the weights, lowering them, given off in body heat.
-
Interesting, I'm going to kick off another thread on this topic, because I'm wondering what others experience is.

I've often hypothesized that you shouldn't need a deficit, you should just need to eat the maintenance level of calories corresponding the weight you want to be. Just use the calculator on this site to work out what your intake should be for your ideal weight and stick to that - it's what you'll need to be eating to stay…
