  • Let's not be too hard on ourselves, we're only human, and only by getting things wrong can we learn to get them right. Happiness is a state of mind, not a destination that can only be reached on achieving some goal.
  • to be fair I don't see anyone getting sick, overweight, or malnourished with the above NHS guidelines. And anyway, the human body is pretty amazing at getting by on all kinds of limited and unusual diets. The americas were discovered by a crew eating nothing more than salted meats, biscuits, and grog.
  • funny, I've not seen a single person say 'tom cruise', 20 years ago he'd be number 1, and he's still looks as young and is making the same kind of movies. for me it's eva longoria physically - although she always plays some awful characters.
  • good tip, i also like cinnamon tea (with one teaspoon of sugar) for staving off the hunger.
  • spot on, diet books are constantly battling to come up with new fads and reinvent old ones to make money, and we're all so gullible - always looking for a silver bullet or quick fix. Good diet advice is much more 'boring' and doesn't sell many books. Checkout the NHS diet advice:…
  • raw food vegans practically live on fruit - check out freelee on youtube (but ignore her obnoxious husband).

  • I tend to eat junk food while watching tv, how do I get rid of that desire/habit? - I find enduring a couple of weeks of cold-turkey on this is the only way - sorry. How to make myself feel full? - fibrous, low-gi, high protein foods are better, but really I'd try to conquer this psychologically, feeling hungry in the hour…
  • way too low, and you'll be miserable the whole 10 weeks. Just start tracking again and keep a more modest deficit (15-20% below maintenance) - or my preferred technique is eat the maintenance calories for the weight you want to be, and eventually you'll reach it (or near enough), that way you'll learn what you need to be…
  • you can have way more than that if it suits you, google 'twinkie diet'
  • I've not seen it attempted. The government could just as easily mandate that cafe's and restaurants publish calorie content on their menus, and add an extra tax for meals above a certain threshold.
  • oh dear, could be chocolate next: http://www.theguardian.com/society/2016/mar/19/extend-sugar-tax-to-biscuits-and-cereals-says-government-adviser we already pay 20% VAT on luxury foods, which includes chocolate. We need to get over this 'sugar is evil' mindset, and focus on portion size.
  • "We ALL feel that way" - I'm not so sure, I get a sense there are many who relish the idea of shooting a burglar.
  • 2 days, I know, I could be fitter and stronger if I did more, but I don't care, 2 days is enough to keep me good enough. Diet is far more important and trumps anything you can do in the gym anyway (as far as fat loss/control goes).
  • Flora margarine, I actually prefer it to butter.
  • There are some good reasons to quit eating meat, mostly about the environment and animal welfare, but stopping in order to lose weight isn't one of them. By all means stop if you find it an easy way to maintain a calorie deficit, or at least go for leaner cuts of meat.
  • funny link on the subject: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/12196452/Jamie-Olivers-sugar-tax-criticised-as-people-point-out-the-high-sugar-content-of-his-recipes.html
  • I too sense that milk is kind of out of fashion in the health and fitness community, back in the 80s a pint of milk a day was considered the elixir of health. As for other reasons: 1. High calories - so what? switch to skimmed milk. 2. Lactose intolerant - fair enough, don't drink it then. 3. Animal welfare - a fair…
  • I find getting my pre-workout eating right to be the hardest thing. If I workout on empty I do struggle, and get a less enjoyable and less successful workout (in terms of number of reps), if I'm too full then it can be very uncomfortable (especially chin-ups). Two-three hours after an average-sized meal I find to usually…
  • Only answer at the moment is cosmetic surgery. I don't advise it, much better to keep in a healthy weight range, and learn to accept how you are. Anyway, do you really want to look like Dolly Parton?
  • I'm sure there are kids whose calorie surplus could be eliminated just be changing what they drink, I know some people who never drink water or low calorie drinks, just fruit juice, milk shakes, and of course coca cola. I'll reserve judgement on whether this tax will help at all. I suspect it'll come down to whether the…
  • Always following the path of least resistance, my problem is I suffer from chronic satisfaction and so never push myself - on the bright side I'm usually happy and not stressed.
  • Am I the only one here scratching my head at how everyone else seems to think children firing guns is a good thing?
  • Stay with Me - shakespeare's sister
  • I would try keeping a really strict diary for a week, that includes every single olive, every dollup of ketchup,... Add up the calories in that and set a target of 10% less.
  • thanks, I was wearing some ordinary Nike running shoes.
  • Eva Longoria, Penelope Cruz, Salma Hayek and I'm not gay, but: Antonio Banderas, Micheal Fassbender, Idris Elba, for some reason I like watching these guys in movies - does that make me slightly gay??? I don't know, I wouldn't want to get physical with them (like I would with the women I've listed), but they do have some…
  • hampshire - let's stick together and teach these americans about the metric system.
  • a 15% calorie deficit has worked for me in the past - I didn't lose any reps on any of my lifts anyway.
  • 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight is a fairly typical target if you're lifting. Also a 200-300 daily calorie surplus (assuming you want to maximise muscle growth, and aren't focused more on losing fat)
  • Seriously, the day I stopped worry about carb vs fat ratio everything got so much easier. All I have now is a daily calorie and protein target, and let carbs and fats take care of themselves. There is no perfect ratio of fats/carbs anyway, everyone is different.
