I guess people get obsessive about the number on the scale because it's easily measurable and you can see the difference in weight but people don't necessarily notice a physical change.

I knew I had gained weight after my final semester of university (binging on bad food, not cooking/exercising, stress etc). The real shock came when I was on a night out and the band around my dress broke :( quite embarrassing!
