  • I've never tried it with protein powder, I imagine it would be fine (but probably less chocolatey).
  • Nope, it just gives a weight in grams and a volumetric measurement (1/2 cup). The weight in grams it gives is equal to the weight of the beans and juice if you multiply it by the number of servings.
  • I focus mainly on calories but I do use it as a guide to keep my fat intake down, since high fat foods tend to make my IBS worse. Whenever I feel like my diet is in a place where I'm happy with it I look at what needs improvement and go from there.
  • I love honey roasted almonds! The Blue Diamond brand is only 5 g sugar and 160 calories per 1 oz serving. It does have a large amount of fat (20% RDA), but it's mostly good fats. My doctor actually told me to eat more almonds to raise my good cholesterol and so far honey almonds are my favorite.
  • As long as your diet isn't mostly rice cakes it's not a problem. Every single thing you eat doesn't have to be perfectly balanced in terms of nutrition, if your macros are (mostly) balanced you're fine.
  • I completely agree. What's worked best for me is to under promise and over deliver. Setting my weight loss at 0.5 lbs a week ensures I don't have to make drastic lifestyle changes overnight that would be likely to make me burn out and give up. Even on a bad day it's fairly simple to eat more than 250 calories below…
  • Weight fluctuation is normal. Think about it: if you weigh yourself, eat a low calorie meal and drink a decent amount of water, when you weigh yourself again you'll probably have a difference of several pounds. This doesn't represent 'true' weight gain since there's no way you could have gained several pounds from a single…
  • Have fun! The important thing is that you're committed to continuing to be mindful of what you eat even if you take a day off now and then.
  • Seconding Miralax, when I've had to take medications that constipate me Miralax was a godsend. It's cheap and over the counter, never gave me diarrhea, and even in water you can barely taste it. If you're not having any bowel movements at all after a few days be sure to call your doctor, you don't want to have an impacted…
  • I didn't gain weight until very late high school/early college, mostly due to back problems that resulted in surgery and continuing post surgical pain. I have pretty serious back pain to this day, it just took me until the past year to get sick of my pain-induced emotional eating making my weight worse and my weight making…
  • So far I've lost the average amount of cheese an American eats in a year. 10 dozen large eggs to go!
  • I know gluten free diets are all the rage now but I've got really into vital wheat gluten flour lately. 75-80% protein by weight and it's like really chewy bread. You can add it to cookies, breads, make vegetarian meat substitutes with it, it's versatile stuff. It's also cheaper pound per pound than real meat and has a…
  • Eating "clean" doesn't matter when it comes to losing weight, if you're burning more calories than you eat you're going to lose weight regardless of what foods they come from. How much of your exercise calories are you eating back? Unless you're wearing a heart rate monitor the estimates provided can be really off,…
  • I used to do that but I found it hinders my progress. I don't do it anymore unless it's a rare occasion, maybe once a month or so I will not count calories for a meal if we go out with friends. But I plan for it by eating smaller meals earlier in the day so that even if I exceed my calorie goals it's not by a huge amount.…
  • I've lost 30+ pounds so far and absolutely did not give up junk food. I just eat less of it than I did before. Takeout once or twice a week has made it a much more valuable treat to look forward to instead of something that was replacing meals I prepare myself. I do typically have some type of candy once a day as well,…
  • Whoever said that is an absolute donkey. Who says that to someone at all, much less someone just walking down the street? I really admire your ability to brush it off and aspire to respond that well to the jerks in my life!
  • The fastest way to gain weight is to go on a crash diet. You're going to have to make permanent changes to the way you eat and/or exercise, and that doesn't come quickly. If they aren't permanent changes you're just going to gain it back.
  • There's no reason you can't have chocolate and lose weight too. You just have to budget it into your calorie goals. Something like a serving of dark chocolate covered fruits or nuts is a great way to eat chocolate in a healthy way. If you're not into dark chocolate check out the chocolate rice cakes that Quaker makes, I…
  • Dealing with disappointment in a positive way is more important than motivation IMO. There are going to be days when you overeat, days when your pants don't fit right, and days where the scale says you've gained weight. But if you can accept that those days don't define you or keep the next day from being a good day where…
  • I once read that breakfast should be at minimum a 200 calorie meal, and I try to stick to that. You don't want to start off the day hungry and tired. 330 for one meal isn't bad even if your calorie goal is 1200. Personally I love bran cereal. Like raisin bran but without the raisins (which are usually drowning in sugar).…
  • If you eat fast food literally every night then it's going to be tough (and probably setting yourself up for failure) if you try to immediately switch to all home cooked meals, especially if you're not an experienced cook. Do the fast food places you visit have nutritional information available? You might have to look…
  • Unless you're exercising with a heart rate monitor you may actually be overestimating your calories burned by exercise. The general advice I've heard is to not eat back more than half of the calories you burn through exercise, just to have some good leeway in case you overestimate.
  • Be sure you aren't trying to make too many lifestyle changes at once. As an example, if you were eating 2500 calories a day of mostly processed food and tried to immediately switch to a 1200 calorie a day diet of foods made entirely from scratch that would make anyone worn out and ready to give up. Making small changes…
  • Something I've returned to again and again when I try to stick to my calorie goal but still feel hungry at the end of the day is 'did I get enough fiber and protein?' On days where I stay hungry the answer to that is usually no. Instead of focusing on specific diets try upping your protein and fiber consumption. Eating…
  • I don't think diet soda is unhealthy, I just plain don't like the taste of it. The sweeteners taste gross to me. But I do drink a lot of canned seltzer water because most of what I want out of soda is just something fizzy. Something fizzy and zero calorie is hard to say no to, if I could stand the taste of the diet sodas…
