You can prelog food for while you're off the grid!

True! I tested at least 10x daily for almost a full year, and there were constant surprises. Even now, I test 3-4x daily, and there are still surprises!

Not to be a Gloomy Gus, but 100g of carbs didn't do the trick for me. I had to get under 40g (net carbs) and not overeat total calories before I was able to get my A1c into non-diabetic range. It was a bit of an adjustment, but I just keep telling myself that fewer carbs = more toes.. ;)

I know better than to rave indiscriminately about anything or anyone, and I just got a reminder of this watching Dr. Bernstein's August 2017 Q&A teleseminar. :/ For months, Dr. Bernstein has studiously avoided familiarizing himself with Fung's approach and has professed ignorance when asked by listeners about fasting.…

Here are some interesting observations (by Michael Eades) on our ability to quickly and radically alter our lipid profiles through dietary intervention: https://proteinpower.com/drmike/2017/07/25/how-to-lower-your-cholesterol/#more-6263

@GaleHawkins - Any well-established downside to high Vitamin D levels? I recall only potential hypercalcemia and decreased melatonin production as possible side effects when deciding how much to take, and I don't believe Vitamin K figured into those discussions at all....

Hrrmm? Hemp seeds are pretty diabetes-friendly..... What was your doctor's problem with them?
-
@ladipoet - I'm looking through my stuff, but in the meantime, I like this one: https://youtu.be/wQ1QGZ6gJ8w

Good sleuthing! As you discovered, A1c is subject to confounding factors that can create falsely elevated results. Frequent, systematic BG testing is a much better indication of your circumstances than A1c, IMHO.

30g net carb, 100g protein, fat flexible, as needed to fill in the cracks. (Low carb has been the only formula that has really worked for me in 15 years. YMMV, of course.)
-
Great progress! Way to go!
-
Amazing how that works. Good news though... the cravings do start dwindling as your BG drifts down!
-
I don't bother with control solution either, (but I also don't worry about expired strips). YMMV, but I wouldn't consider A1c = 6.2 to be merely pre-diabetic but rather well info Type 2 range..
-
Unlikely! It's just that without testing, many people (yeah, moi included.. ) can't predict based on how they feel where the heck their BP and BG are. Also, it's not that a spike causes dementia, but that your risk rises as your BG levels increase.
-
If you only check your BG in occasional fasting lab work, you might consider asking your doc to order an HbA1c test. Neither will tell you how high your BG levels are after eating, though, and spikes are linked to dementia risk (and maybe other chronic diseases). Many PCPs (like mine) miss even clear trends of rising…

Doing great! Those pesky BGs don't always come down as fast as one might like, but eventually... woo hoo!
-
Well, let's see. If you don't care about being/staying in ketosis for whatever reason and you're not diabetic, then... Yep, I would recommend eating, oh, 80 blueberries a day now that they're in season, and enough tomatoes to get canker sores so you won't want them till they're good again next summer... For starters. So, I…

I have to confess that I half expect to see mangoes, oranges, carrots, etc., when someone says "juicing", but if you're doing it mostly with spinach, chard & kale and consuming it over the course of a day, you're probably not getting any jolts in net carbs (or seeing BG spikes) at all. B)

Nice!

Whoa. Congrats!

I think "Stinky Tofu " might be a puffy boiled delicacy that's one of several members of the Smelly Tofu family. I wouldn't make a steady diet of it, but I could get more than 1/8 teaspoon down without projectile barfing. The rotting mess on the breakfast bar, by contrast, of which I sampled maybe 2 grains, might go by…
-
The last time I approached a hurling state from an individual food (as opposed to Norovirus - don't ask :s), it was the surprise element - überfermented tofu from a breakfast buffet in China that looked for all the world like the familiar bland, rubbery, sautéed stuff we get in the US.... And not a vein or bone in sight!
-
Nice work. Glad you found a sympathetic doc!
-
@canadjineh @poli22 - So you folks don't just gag or maybe throw up a little in your mouths... You actually projectile vomit if a bone gets near your chops?

Since first reading the suggestion here many moons ago, I have used that sensible rule. Perhaps as a consequence (with some credit due the aforementioned GI fireworks produced by sorbitol and its kin), I pretty much stick to stevia and erythritol. So finding Lilly's was B)!

Yum. Alas, the fiber and net carb values for artichokes are pretty diverse, both on MFP and Cronometer... :/ ??
-
Not precisely this scenario, but it does seem to work best in input individual ingredients into MFP rather than to import a recipe. FYI, Cronometer.com is much better at providing detailed nutritional information than MFP, where user-supplied values can be all over the place. In addition, food values on labels may differ…

I'm a less concerned with absolute accuracy, given the idiosyncrasies of both test-at-home and laboratory tests, and more worried about consistency within a meter's own readings. (Of course, with significant margins of error, that may be half pipe-dream as well...)
-
I can't believe your progress in 12 short months! Kudos <3
