Here's another wonderful speech by Prof. Bikman, this one to the BYU community entitled, "The Plagues of Prosperity." https://youtu.be/xefdEXfG9j0

Any updates? FYI, I switched pharmacies to an independent, which offered to get me week's worth of 8 different generics after brand Glucophage vanished. On my new pharmacist's recommendation, I wound up trying Oceanside first, which was both GI and BG friendly, so I've stuck with it.

Whew, what a difference a couple years make. Dr. Bikman was not on my radar at the time, but he is a terrific resource. His book, like his lectures, is outstanding.

Personally, keto has has been my friend going on 5 years now, after various "eat your carbs" approaches simply didn't work to get my BG, triglycerides, liver enzymes, and inflammation markers down.
-
Maybe it's a personal thing. I don't spike from erythritol (or stevia), though others have reported the opposite. I did see that monk fruit is listed further down the ingredient list, and I've always tried to avoid it. Hmm.

How can you tell?

While gradually increasing the dose is a good idea, T2Ds should be aware that generic versions of Met vary greatly in their GI effects. Many independent pharmacies have access to several different generics. I've had good luck with Oceanside. Per Dr. Bernstein, not everyone taking Metformin experiences B12 depletion, and…

Ahoy! How low had your A1c dropped when you quit Metformin?

Mint chip has the lowest carb count - 4g per *pint*!

I just noticed Rebel's arrival in my local supermarkets - a genuine revelation. I had to smile at, "Yummy things come to those who wait." It's been since I started LC in 2015 that I had a little bowl of ice cream - and well worth the wait!

Any smartphone apps (other than Abbott's dismal FreeStyle LibreLink) seem to work with the provincial 14-day sensors?
-
Still a thing. (Happy new decade!)

Happy new decade - timeless advice!

Any insights into amino acid testing?

Ahoy, everyone. Happy 2019! I've had my BG under pretty good control (A1c 5.0-5.5) since I started keto 3 years ago. However..... I haven't been able to reverse osteopenia or sarcopenia (loss of lean tissue), despite ramping up protein and being pretty religious about taking vitamin D, k2, boron & magnesium. It has also…

$75 really is not bad. But all things being equal, in my mind the extra $35 per month would be happier with me than with Walgreen's or Abbott..... ;)
-
I should mention the Freestyle Libre - gives you painless readings 24/7, with reduced numbers of fingersticks as a check on accuracy. (You attach a sensor to your skin and can read it with your cell phone for 14 days.) The insights from trends, spikes, and reactions to various foods, sleep, stress, etc., are still…

FYI, you can buy soon-expiring Contour Next strips off Amazon and eBay at much lower prices than pharmacies offer...
-
You may be able to work the price down... Here's a summary of my experience with Walgreen... ******* 3-pack, Libre sensors - $40 at Walgreens This price is without insurance coverage (because you're not insulin-dependent, etc). 1. If you don't have insurance, get a free prescription discount card (or Group #, BIN, and…

Well, if your lab tests show a healthy level of Vitamin D (and calcium), you don't need to take more. But if your Vitamin D is tough to maintain, no reason not to up your dose. (I went from 3000 IU to 5000 IU to 20,000 IU/day for a while, then backed off to 10-15,000 IU - but not lower - to keep it above 65 ng/ml.) ;)
-
Amen. Can't argue that!
-
@cstehansen - Congrats! Your TG & HDL results are encouraging. I had resisted the temptation to get a 2nd CAC test, but, given your report, I'm sorely tempted. FYI, there does appear to be some controversy over CAC scoring methods, which involves the weight to be assigned to plaque density v. volume. (I believe Michael…

*The* vegan/vegetarian crowd? There are plenty of Vs who avoid carbs... Seems to me the processed food manufacturers, vendors, etc., had/have the most to lose from people going LC.
-
Hmm. Aren't most statins and BP meds off-patent these days? Seems like the sweeter cruises would come from cranking out scripts for just-approved meds & devices for diabetes and its progeny (kidney failure, CVD, toenail fungus, terminal flatulence, etc.).

The Libre has been a real revelation so far, especially regarding low nighttime and high morning BG levels. I like the Android apps, which you can use instead of the pricey reader, but users seem to develop their own collection of tips & tricks! The Nightrider has been unreliable with my Samsung phones. Users seem to…

Have you had antibody tests for Type 1/LADA (adult onset of T1)? (A fasting BG of 300 could be a sign that you're not making much insulin.) 150g of non-fiber carbs would double my BG, and fast! I can only control it with Metformin and 50g of carbs or less (I average around 40g).
-
That's a positive? >:)

There are better and worse ways to eat few enough carbs to be in ketosis, and some of them could be pretty low in key nutrients. But that's probably not what they had mind...

There's a panel discussion in the Food for Thought collection in which featured speaker Sarah Hallberg pretty much flattens a few august nay-sayers.

She is great. Thx!
