I make aebleskiver only a few times a year- Christmas, Easter, and my partner's birthday. I figure, if I blow a few extra hundred calories on aebleskivers (with jam and whipped cream, of course!), well... that's what extra cardio is for right? I deliberately kept things like Robins Eggs (my downfall) and chocolate peanut…

Golden! Thank you!

WOO! Congrats on taking your first step out the door, and on continuing to see it snowball! Keep losin'!

Nicely done! And hurray for the challenges helping keep you on track. It's so easy to fall off without that little bit of impetus, isn't it?

I have one of those Gazelle strider exercise machines that I use while I watch TV- I just pretend I'm running really really fast towards that pizza! (For me, most fast food is gross looking, and the commercials mostly turn me off, but pizza... pizzaaaaa...)

You ARE on the right path! :) Don't get discouraged. How long have you been doing this? Believe me, the mirror is not your friend. You see what you expect to see, not what's really there. I've lost 25 pounds and gone from 'obese' range to the middle of the 'overweight' range, and when I look in the mirror, I see a fat…

Most 'healthier' desserts aren't worth my calorie count. I'd rather save up my calories and have a splurge on a dessert I'm really craving. I do generally have a bit of dark chocolate here and there during the week, but once a month or so I'll make a small cake or batch of cookies or something. (I bake my own stuff so I…

Oysters aren't food. Oysters belong in the ocean, making little baby oysters, not on my plate!

Average comes out to about a pound a week, but some weeks I'm up a quarter pound, other weeks, down a pound a half. Seems like I'm at a steady 4.5 pounds per month if you look at my monthly trends. Weekly, there are so many other factors, I try not to even think about it- just record the number I'm given and move on.

Cos-playing again. I've missed playing dress-up! There just aren't that many cool options for a fat chick in the cosplay world. (Which brings me to a huge Thank You to 'Criminal Minds' for bringing us Penelope Garcia! Not just smart, but stylish costume play for rounder girls as well! My "Penelope" dress is already way too…

Keep in mind that losing that fast, you're not just losing fat, but muscle- you might be lighter by the end, but you won't be terribly happy with how you look. You don't need a crash diet- just log for a week, look at how much you eat of what, and then make cuts and healthy substitutions to get you started. You don't have…

Chicken wings with blue cheese dressing. I love my chicken wings! Now, if we're out with a group, and order the chicken wing appetizer, I'll eat one wing instead of ordering a whole appetizer as my meal. Those Little Debbie peanut butter wafer cakes... I would eat those like, well, like candy. Not worth the calorie count…

It's taken five years and a lot of patience to find fish and fish recipes that my husband likes. I'm finally succeeding. Go for mild, meatier fish, like mahi-mahi, (I buy the fresh-frozen at Trader Joe's) and use good complimentary sauces that work with the fish, not against it. My most recent success was mahi mahi covered…

Are you a 'super-taster'? One of the people who thinks cilantro tastes like soap? My sister is a super-taster: she doesn't like anything with onions and peppers, kale or cabbage- she doesn't even like strawberries! Anyway, she's been experimenting more recently with veggies and discovers that boiling and draining to reduce…

Sorry. I'm healthiest when I include a variety of dairy, grains and the occasional waffle or glass of wine in my diet, thanks. Whole 30 is just another take on the Paleo thing, only phrased to be more about healthy organic eating than 'eating what our ancestors did'.

What everyone else is saying is true- Even if you only have one pill left, make sure you take it, because your body can harbor that bacteria and they can become resistant if you don't wipe them out. I know you feel fine, but it's misuse of antibiotics that are leading to more and more bacteria becoming resistant to them.…

Poppyseed Dressing: 1/2 cup nonfat plain yogurt 2 tablespoons cider vinegar 1/2 tsp honey 1 tablespoon poppyseeds 1/4 tsp celery seed Best to make a few hours before dinner and refrigerate so the flavors all meld together! This one is especially good for coleslaws or tossed-type salads. Lemon Balsamic: 1 part olive oil to…

5 pounds in a month is a 1.25 pounds a week, which is pretty much on target for sustainable weight loss. I eat back half my exercise calories, and when I was on 1200, that was critical. A few days of not eating it back, and I started to feel just tired and hungry all the time. Macros are important to make sure you're…

Did it as part of research for my book. Lasted 3 days. My husband went out and came back with a huge pile of Indian take-out and told me to eat it or I could sleep in the yard. (He was joking about the yard part. ... i think... though we did have a lovely hammock at the time.) I need to keep my calorie intake even…

Best advice I can give is to start slowly! It's way too easy to leap in, cut down your intake and start exercising and end up hungry, sore, tired and even injured. :) Baby steps will get you where you want to go. Trying to 'jump start' with energy drinks, meal replacements, etc, isn't going to help much. You'll feel…

Because for many people, keto is not only unsustainable but also deeply unhealthy. It doesn't work for everyone. It's a fad, and yes, it has many supporters, but it's not something that should be given to a newbie who is trying to learn how to eat healthily and get fit. After someone has tried sensible smart eating with…

First off: Don't diet/do gym on and off. Make lifestyle changes that fit how you WANT to live. That doesn't mean giving up bread, or going to the gym every day if that's not something that's sustainable for you. Plan to go shopping once a week and stock up on meal items that you can make meals out of- pre-weigh and pre-log…

A bite of chocolate? Pretty much every day. Ice cream or cookies? Once or twice a month. Doritos? Once every three or four months. (Every four months or so, I have to make a long road trip. I convince myself that Doritos and string cheese are the healthier food options at the gas station convenience stores.)

L5-S1 is a *kitten*, I swear. :( BUT you're on the road to recovery and you can do this! Just keep the finish line in sight in the back of your mind and you'll get there. :) (Also, ice packs are your friend...)

I tried to do too much all at once and ended up injured and sick. (That was what prompted me to start writing the book I'm working on about historical health-fads and diet trends.) This time, my doctor recommended using a calorie counting site (his own system that his health group uses) and starting at the top of my TDEE…

Do both. They are very different physical creatures- cardio vs stretching/body strength, so there's no reason to start doing them both at once. They actually compliment each other. Take it slow and ease into both of them, though! Find a good beginners yoga class and start walking with interspersed jogging to build up your…

People as me if I've gotten a new haircut or dyed my hair or something. I just smile and say, "Maybe..." (I've had the same hairstyle since 1996...)

I miss Fred Meyer- We don't have them here. Trader Joe's Lucky's Safeway Plus I get an organic fruit & veg box delivered from Grub Market twice a month.

Woo! Way to go!

I did indeed. It turned out that the MRI didn't even show how bad it was. The herniation was so old that it had built scar-tissue around it, and had calcified to my tendons and muscle-tissue. My spine was degrading from having no disc to pad it. The surgery should have taken under an hour, but my surgeon spent almost two…
