HHHmmmm.... I might have to do a post just entitled "why ultra?" As far as gear and planning, etc, it is very race specific, so those kinds of things will be discussed 4 times i 2018 as I run each race and report on it.
-
I'll blog on it. Speaking of blogging. Since I'm (relatively) new to trail running and technically an "ultramarathoner" is there anything this group would be interested in me blogging about? I've mainly been writing up training logs but I figure it would be a good way to share what I learn, but I don't know what people are…

Starting in September (probably) I'm going to transition to a High Fat Low Carb diet.... kind of a big debate on that issue in the long distance community. I would have done it sooner, but my coach said to hold off until after the racing season, and he's a HFLC athlete so he knows how switching effects training.

comes in waves, I've gone back and forth between both several times in the last 2 years. I know where you're at.

Didn't even think about that. That's a great idea.

I was able to get the average HR for the last 20 minutes of my run using the data graph on Garmin connect app on my phone if select the HR graph for full screen, you can hold one finger on where you start the 20min block, hold it there, then tap at the other end and it will give you the average HR for that time. I ran the…

Run a Friel test for LTHR and use that number would be my advice. the zones I got from doing that have jived pretty well with my running paces and efforts, for the most part.
-
@Stoshew71 I highly doubt you were overreaching on an Easy run. My moderate runs mostly get to a 4 and even harder runs rarely get me to a 5 for training effect. Check your zones, as they are probably really generic and not related to your true HR zones. Mine are all based off of my best estimate LTHR of 175 and…

As Travis Macy would say, It's all good mental training

I had to drop my little guy off at daycare this morning. That means I didn't get my run in this morning. My students are wondering why I am cranky today. I will be running at around 2030 this evening.... My wife will wonder why I am tired... I will be getting my 2:30:00 long run in at 0730 tomorrow morning... My little man…

I can't this year, but 19 I might be able to fit it in, if it doesn't conflict with my other training schedules. CDR is a huge bucket list race for me because of the coolness of it.
-
Awesome.
-
Then just call it CDR. it looks amazing. I'm considering soloing it at some point. it's only 125k

19F is a great temp

Always ok. Good job getting the miles in today.

Great job getting HM training going! I LOL'ed at the baby on board comment. So awesome!

So, I was Emailing back and forth with my coach over the weekend, about goals for 2018. With my race goal, I was asking him what I should put in for the 4th race for me. He says the MN Voyageur 50. Ugh, I have a love/hate relationship with this idea and the course. It's basically doing my first trail marathon twice. It's…

@JessicaMcB unless your trail speed is close to your road speed, you're not getting full potential out of speedwork on trail. Speed work is about increasing overall maximum legspeed, which translates into easier running around. That's the reason a lot of the elite ultra runners still do track work. And hill work isn't…

Air temp on my run last night was -20. Not sure on windchill. It's doable as long as you're layered up right. I'm a bit tired today, but that's it. Having a balaclava or muff to cover your mouth and nose will help. I didn't run with one, but would, in lower temps.

All this talk of annual goals. With recovery cycles from my April and September races, I don't dare set an annual goal. All annual goals are race or skill related. Good luck to everyone going for 2018 in 2018.

I've run in temps down to -23F. The key is layering. I don't really like treadmills, and my PT told me to stop using them, so outside is my only real option for running, since there's no indoor track near by. I'll have 4-5 layers on top and 3-4 on bottom plus hat, gloves, glove liners, socks, etc...
