Good point. I always assume plant based eaters try to eat mostly vegetables and not a lot of calorie dense stuff, but that's probably a bad assumption.

it smells bad? I never noticed

It's funny. Right after I posted this I washed a 1lb box of triple-washed organic spinach in my sink like I always do. There was a rather large root attached to one leaf, so I'm glad I did it. Thats one nice thing about washing in the sink - it's a chance to toss out the bad things. Also, I just wanted to point out that…

It's interesting that I started with Finding Peace, and am now using the Headspace App. Small world! I read 4 short books and several articles before I started with Finding Peace. They were all good, but my favorite one was 10% Happier. I like how the author went through an extensive vetting process for refining his…

Just curious - did you do the raisin experiment when you started? That was one of my favorites, haha.

Right on. I used to be a gear-head too, and performance was everything to me back then. I just loved my power bars, gu, etc. I still ride every other day, with hiking and strength work on my off days. Performance is nice, but secondary to overall good health. As you say, it's a tough switch. Thanks for the encouragement!

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. I'm curious to see how they define "balanced". Do you consume shakes at all?
-
:D Do you like it?
-
No, sorry I didn't provide enough info on that. No processed food of any kind. Unfortunately not. 3 pieces of fruit, no grains. I'm not ruling out some sort of shake to reduce volume. Maybe 2 shakes a day, between the 3 meals. I guess I'll do some more searching.

Did you miss this line?

Ok, after eating report. On Thursday I put one on my countertop, and one in the fridge, figuring it would need time to thaw out and ripen for the debate watching party at my friend's tonight. Well, I noticed these didn't smell strongly at all, and suspected something wasn't right. When I went to leave for the party, I…

What? I thought it was proven to be animal protein: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zAFA-hamZ0
-
Haha - busted! But actually I have read about food combining on several sites to see if I can find anything that might help my individual occasional discomfort. The fruit thing (eat it alone well before a meal instead of for desert) definitely helped. Most of the info isn't helpful, and I'm not sure any of it applies to…

Haha, that's awesome!

Ok, this one looks much better. step 1 - pick one of these categories at each meal: Fresh fruit Starches Animal Protein Nuts, Seeds & Dried Fruit step 2 - fill the rest of your plate with cooked or raw non-starchy vegetables step 3 - wait 3 to 4 hours before switching categories http://detoxinista.com/about/food-combining/

I have one sitting on my counter top. Very little smell. Hope it will be thawed out and ready to eat Sunday, and most importantly ripe and really tasting like a durian.
-
Oh sorry, I got the wrong site. Here's the right one. Dr. Pickering is a respected professional who knew Charles Atlas, so I have much more confidence in his advice, even though there are less rules. The 3 commandments: 1) No proteins and starches at the same meal 2) No fruits and vegetables at the same meal 3) Eat melon…

I just bought 2 durian for $23. Quite a bargain for the US, considering the last one I bought in Thailand was about $10. These are Thai monthong durian, and they appear to have been frozen, or at least stored at very cold temperatures for some time. I'll let you know how they turn out. I plan on eating one on Sunday.

It's not just that one site either. If you google "food combining", you get dozens of sites, much of the information contradicts itself, often even within a single site. But one thing I've changed that has helped me is eating fruit well before a meal instead of right after it. Its a pretty simple change that has reduced…

My local asian markets don't carry it, but I found a market that's only a 1hr drive from here. Yay! I'm going to surprise the hell (not kitten) out of a friend of mine. Lol - I assume that's a joke.

Yeah, I eat dulse and kombu (kelp). I'm not a big fan of dulse, but I love kombu. I ate a lot of wakame on my recent trip to asia. I think I'll replace the dulse with that next time I run out. I use iodized salt too, but I don't eat tons of it, and it really doesn't have much iodine. For that matter, supplements don't…

My Thai friends try to convince me that all the hotels really care about is keeping Durian out of the elevators. Not sure this is true, but we sneaked one into my condo one time using the service elevator (22nd floor), and the scent didn't linger as far as I know, but that's the same lift they use for garbage, so who knows.

Stack three strips of crispy bacon neatly on top of each other, put a single row of 4-6 Oreos on top, depending on the length of the bacon, add three more strips of bacon, and you have a healthy Oreo bacon sandwich. Consume in a cookie-monster style, because no other way is possible. Enjoy!

Do you give the chickens a head start before you hunt them? That would be cleaner.

I understand now. We are using different definitions of "vegan". I googled it, and the most common definition I found was a person who eats a plant-based diet. To avoid confusion, maybe differentiating by using "ethical vegan", or at least explaining that you are disagreeing with the definition would help.
-
You've either forgotten or never learned basic logic. If you make a statement, and that statement isn't always true, then that statement is false. Therefore the statement "people go vegan for ethical reasons" is false. All it takes is one person to go vegan for some other reason to make the statement false. Please…

I'd like to eat (drink) bone broth, but I don't have the equipment/location/patience to cook anything for 48 hrs. I saw some for sale on amazon for ridiculous prices. Bummer. Some vegans here seem to think everyone went vegan for ethical reasons. I have 2 friends that went vegan purely for health reasons, so this isn't…

If you can't make it naturally, you can add a little Nu-Salt.
