  • Fig Newtons. So sad...
  • Really diagnosed by an endocrinologist, or "diagnosed" by some men's clinic? If the former, why are you not being treated for it already? Treatment for any medical condition should immediately follow diagnosis.
  • Drained. That's how you'd use them in a dish.
  • If I'm going on vacation I don't worry about eating. Vacations are for relaxing and for play. However, I often feel my days are too packed to focus much on eating anyway. Last time I went on vacation I ended up losing 2-3 unintended pounds, probably from all the walking and the fact I only ate when I could find a moment.
  • Down in Santa Cruz there's a place called the Penny Ice Creamery. It's a very small shop where they make all their own product. Since they source locally when they can (and organic/Fair Trade when they can't) you never know what flavors they'll have and it varies seasonally. Their special sundae this past weekend was…
  • Whatever you're eating now. Just less of it.
  • I don't do salad often, but when I do I log it. Calories are calories, even if they're relatively few. And don't forget the dressing. Depending on how much you use, it might actually contribute most of a salad's calories. Volume is a very unreliable method for measuring veggies, particularly leafy greens. Find entries that…
  • That doesn't mean it's not a question for your doctor. It just means your doctor failed to mention this one way or another. Call him up and ask. This is very clearly a medical question.
  • Try a very long bottle brush.
  • The Discobolus isn't a god of course; he's an athlete. To me he doesn't look all that different from modern athletes who engage in the same kind of sports. Or maybe he might as well be a god. Ancient Greeks depicted their gods as idealized, athletic young men -- if they were supposed to be older you just slapped a beard…
  • It depends. If it's soluble fiber, some estimate you get as much as 2 cal/g; that is, half as much as other carbs. If it's insoluble fiber, it pretty much just passes right through you unchanged and provides no calories. Either way, it probably doesn't make enough difference in this case to matter much.
  • Yes, adding together the calories from the macros is actually how they figure the calorie content of a food. The old bomb calorimeter method is not often used these days. Rather, the food is analyzed in a lab for protein, carbohydrate, alcohol, and fat content, and the calories per gram are added up. There are 4 cal/g for…
  • If you're only getting 700-900 calories/day, you're in danger of malnourishing yourself. Don't keep yourself so far away from calorie-dense foods. Add more protein and fat back into your diet. One key in my view to sustainable weight loss is not to eliminate our favorite foods from our diets. Rather, keep them -- just eat…
  • Not at your age, I didn't. 13 years later though, yeah.
  • No one's body makes iron. It's a mineral, an elemental metal, and we must get it from our diets. The issue is that for some people, the body releases more iron than they take in. For reasons that should be obvious, this happens more often with women than with men. But I'm glad you found the problem! My previous reply was…
  • You know, you could open your diet up a little bit. I'm sure your self-imposed restriction on packaged food isn't helping when your problem is that you need to get more varieties of food in your diet and not less. Simple-minded philosophies like "if the list has words i dont know, i dont eat it" sound good on a book blurb…
  • Search the database for dishes that seem comparable and take your best guess. There's not much else we can do, really.
  • That. And, may I add, as long as you're getting enough nutrition otherwise. I think we make things harder on ourselves when we wall off certain foods we enjoy as forbidden.
  • Not that you should hijack someone else's thread, but try nonfat Greek yogurt.
  • If sugar is what you want to spend your available calories on, go right ahead. Unless you have some kind of metabolic issue where you ought to restrict sugar, and as long as you're getting enough nutrition otherwise, it's fine.
  • You have hit on the big secret to why Atkins works. It leaves you feeling extremely sated, so you automatically eat less without really concentrating on it.
  • Perhaps, but for myself I definitely feel hungrier on days I run. So while I can eat more, I also need to relay more.
  • For me, it was when I was at my target weight or slightly below by a fraction of a lb. for 2 days running. But do what you like. You are the boss of your weight loss.
  • What can possibly make you feel gross about a nice cup of coffee? Personally I find sugar superfluous, but cream is yummy and really doesn't add that many calories. Just enjoy it and stop worrying about the 35 or so calories you're getting. Or worry and log them, but I'm sure you can find room for another 35 calories in…
  • Is there something wrong that you can't access MFP's tools for doing this? Fill out your fitness profile with your current stats, tell it the weight loss rate you'd like to aim for, and it will tell you how many calories to eat to meet that goal.
  • What makes you say only 60+ lbs is "significant"? Losing nearly 40 lbs and more than 4 inches off my waist sure seems significant to me. And yes, I did it with CICO. As others have pointed out, you seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of what is meant by CICO. Working out is only helpful for weight loss to the…
  • Decent labor legislation doesn't happen without an organization pushing for it, especially in heavily Republican states.

  • It's a matter of state law, and most states do not require employers to allow meal breaks. https://www.dol.gov/whd/state/rest.htm It sucks, but that's what can happen when you don't have a union. @missdelainie, by all means bring something small like a protein bar to munch on whenever you get a moment. Either that, or make…

  • Keep losing, or recomp. You can't spot-reduce, unfortunately. The fat comes off in a way determined by your genes. Very often, it comes off the tummy last.
