  • My favorite veggie receipe is lentils with butternut squash and a side dish of steamed leafy greens like kale or collards. Lots of protein from the lentils. Just cook until soft. I like to shake McCormick's Perfect Pinch garlic, red pepper, and red bell pepper on my food, or tamari soy sauce. I also like big salads with…
  • Good catch. I eat sugarless gum and don't log it. I just read the label and it's approx 5 calories a piece! How many millions of pieces have I eaten?
  • Diet staples: oatmeal, low sugar (health problem), leafy greens. Exercise every day. Welcome and best wishes. :)
  • It is high in saturated fat (advised by my doctor to reduce it). I have to pass on coconut oil because I have cholesterol problems. I use olive oil instead.
  • I like cashew milk. It's creamier than almond. Silk makes an almond/cashew nutmilk with 10 G protein per 8 oz, more protein than in most plant milks except maybe soy, which upsets my stomach. All the plant milks taste great and most have added calcium and vitamins equal to dairy milk. I drink plant milk because I'm a…
  • I haven't read all the comments, but I'm sure someone else has pointed out that only calories matter with weight loss. You can eat whatever kind of food you want as long as you watch your calories. Nutrition is another subject. I eat healthy food that tastes good and I don't spend a lot of money. For example, I eat a lot…
  • That comment was about them, their need to feel powerful or superior, plus they were a pack and probably showing off to each other. It's hard. but try not to take it personally. You happened to walk by in an isolated area where they could make a rude comment -- they would not have done that if there were more witnesses. If…
  • Best wishes to you and your husband during his treatment. I don't know what kind of food you eat. Many people use crockpots or slow cookers. http://allrecipes.com/recipes/253/everyday-cooking/slow-cooker/ I'm vegetarian and cook batches of lentils ahead of time -- they have good protein and are easy to cook. I add whatever…
  • Not so and my weight loss is proof. I walked before and after mild illness and didn't raise my heart rate that much. Here's an article about raising your heart rate and exercise. It quotes various doctors. http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/features/the-truth-about-heart-rate-and-exercise#2 Excerpt: 4. TRUE OR FALSE:…
  • I lost 36 pounds in 4.5 months. The only exercise I did was walk. The weight loss and walking changed my high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and body weight to normal. I would change doctors.
  • There's one big hill here with a road that goes in a circle and has 5 parking areas at different points (you can also hike offroad through swampy brush and boulders, but we have a serious tick problem, so you would be nuts to do that). I've been parking at the halfway point, hiking up the hill via the road, and then…
  • I felt like a real hardcore runner, running in the pouring rain... except for the umbrella, LOL. Mary Poppins all the way.
  • We have trails here, lots of horse trails across open fields (a muddy, poopy mess in the rain) and through woods. I definitely plan to jog the field trails. After my fall and concussion 2 years ago, I won't go off in the woods by myself in case I fall and it takes them a while to find my carcass.
  • Your idea is a good one, but I just finished Day 2, Week 1. I had to do Day 1 to find out it was too easy. Apart from jogging on my own, I'm still going to follow the program because changing from walking to running to walking every 60-90 seconds throws me off, so I must be getting some benefit from that.
  • Thanks. Fortunately, I don't have to walk or jog in an urban setting. I live across the road from a national park with lots of almost empty roads, horse trails, etc. I'm very famiiar with most of it. An urban setting has lots more hazards, like the icy patches and manhole covers you mention. I also agree about the grass…
  • Thanks, everybody. lorrpb, I'm glad I didn't see your post or I wouldn't have gone! It's pouring rain now. I skipped my favorite place with steep hills and jogged for 30 minutes along a mostly flat stretch with some gentle rolling hills. And I avoided all the painted lines (this is in a national park with several parking…
  • Thanks, I forgot about leaves and didn't know about stone pavers (but do know that flat rocks are slippery when wet). I'm leaving in a few minutes for a nearby national park with loads with leaves etc. so this is helpful.
  • Thanks, I appreciate the comment. It's not freezing here, so I'm going out then and will definitely avoid painted lines.
  • I don't know where you live, but in the US many hospitals have free stop smoking programs. If there is one in your area, you could go and just adapt it to your problem. I quit cigarettes many years ago, but knew I would start again and went to a 6-week class for support. They trained me to think like a non-smoker. It was…
  • Thanks again, everyone. I've bookmarked this to keep all the suggestions.
  • I don't have any problems with walking. I can walk for hours and many miles with no problem at all. I've never had knee issues except when doing C25K. Thanks, everybody, for the comments and suggestions. I really appreciate your thoughts. I haven't read them all yet but will take time to read every one. I watched a video…
  • Thanks, everybody. I appreciate all the replies. esjones, a coach to review my form is a good idea. I found some running form videos on youtube. Also, I went back to college, was required to take a phys ed course, which I just finished, and to my surprise the professor was a neighbor. She's a longtime runner, soccer coach,…
  • Thanks, I really appreciate your comments. I live near a national park which is a fantastic place for exercise and beats the gym hands down. Edited: The store near me that sells good shoes does not have a machine that measures your stride etc. I'm 100 miles from a city. Anyway, I will look into it this week. Maybe there's…
  • Thanks, I will hold that in mind about gait, foot placement and reach. I have an uneven wear pattern on the bottom of some of my shoes. Road vs treadmill does seem to be a factor with walking. I can tell the impact difference in my body with six miles outside versus six miles on a treadmill. The knee thing, though,…
  • That's what I suspected. Thanks for your reply.
  • You are welcome to add me. My blood pressure was 150/86 five months ago. I lowered it to normal by exercise and losing weight. I checked it last week and it was around 95/65. It has been low-normal all my life, so I refused to go on BP meds because I knew it was high because I was overweight and sedentary. I walk around…
  • I lowered my overall cholesterol from 290 to 170 in 5 months. My triglycerides went down over 100 points. I'm a vegetarian who ate a lot of dairy (lots of cheese and sugary Greek yogurt), other sweets, fruit, and junk food. My doctor told me my high blood pressure and high cholesterol put me at high risk of a heart attack…
  • I eat oatmeal every day, with sliced fruit for sweetener. Oatmeal is a whole grain. Perhaps you could try adding oatmeal to your day and see what happens (unless you already eat it). If an incredible loaf of bread was in my kitchen, I would eat the whole thing, but don't feel that way about oatmeal. I'm with you on the…
  • I eat a plant-based diet. I couldn't follow your restrictions above. Do you have a health problem with grains? Why no snacks? It looks like you're going to get most of your protein from nuts, which doesn't sound very filling. Breakfast: what do you plan to eat? Your grains only 1-2x a week eliminates oatmeal and other…
