I just discovered this group, and I'm joining mid-month. I just finished Day 1, Week 2 of C25K. I've got a buddy who told me about the app, and we decided to train together with the shared goal of running a 5K in September. If we follow through, it'll be the first race for either of us. I'm a big guy (6'1", 280 lbs), so…

I appreciate the advice. As far as goals are concerned, I'm really just playing. I've always loved lifting heavy weights - it just feels soooo good. But like I said, I put on fat like its nobody's business, so lately I've been operating on a calorie deficit. I've got a Smith-style rack that I never use the Smith bar on…

Several peer-reviwed studies over the years have found that eating too little can hinder effective weight loss. The suggested explanation is that a drastic and sustained loss of caloric intake sends the body into a 'panic mode' and the body substantially lowers it's metabolism in an attempt to conserve fat stores. One can…

I don't know if you're into supplements or not, but you should check out the peer-reviewed literature on HMB. There have been a few clinical studies (not funded by vested interests) that have shown that the supplement aids in simultaneous muscle growth and weight loss. It's relatively expensive, though, and the cost may…

So just to make sure I understand what I'm doing here, taking creatine is going to cause water retention, which is going to make me look bloated and weigh more. But in the long run, creatine is going to help me gain muscle mass, which in turn will burn more calories and cause me to lose fat. So if I'm looking at the…

I'm giving this thread a bump, because I experience the same thing. I try to eat relatively late to stave off hunger, but often I wake up at 2 in the morning, go to the fridge, and eat whatever unhealthy leftovers my wife and kids left from the evening's meal. I can't avoid having less-than-desirable foods in the fridge,…

Yep, Staci, I was thinking about the same approach to my morning breakfast. Bowl. Tare. Dry granola. Tare. Yoghurt. Tare. Almonds. My scale arrives tomorrow, and I can't wait to get started. For some reason, I'm someone who finds new gadgets kind of motivating. I think I'll spring for a Fitbit for myself for Christmas.

Well, that's all remarkably disappointing, but it's good to know.
-
You're right. I'll see if I can edit the OP.

Thanks for the advice. The scale I ordered does have a TARE button on it, but until I just Googled it, I had no idea what it did. That function will make measurement easier, though.

I just ordered the Ozeri Touch III kitchen scale from Amazon. It should arrive on Saturday. Until then, I'll just keep doing the best I can. Thanks for all the advice, folks. It's nice to have a supportive community.

I'll get a digital scale today, then. What's the verdict on scales that measure body fat composition?
-
I don't have a food scale, though I could certainly invest in one today. But I have been watching serving sizes closely. So, for example, I measure out one cup of yoghurt for my breakfast. Most of the time, the serving sizes are pretty self-explanatory. If I have a boiled egg for breakfast, for instance, or if I eat a…

Do you track your calorie intake? Is it possible that you're not getting as many calories as you think you are?
