  • While I don't agree with sugar being addictive, I do agree that people handle it in very different ways. My wife and I are a classic example. I can have sweets in the house and be perfectly satisfied with a small serving of them, put them back away and think nothing of it. A bag of candy, chocolates, cookies, etc. can…
  • For cardio and everyday wear I use an Apple Watch. For cycling I use a Garmin 520. I also use a Scosche Rhythm+ HRM strap, which pairs to the watch via Bluetooth and to the Garmin via ANT+.
  • I've worn the Apple Watch for just over a year. It does a pretty good job of reading the heart rate during everyday activities and/or steady state cardio, although it will freak out once in a great while. During strength training or any other sporadic activity, the pulse is highly unreliable and jumps all over the place…
  • Still arbitrary, senseless and ridiculous "rules". And Mercola is a complete and total quack, so anything on his website is fruits of the poisonous tree.
  • A lot of people highly overestimate their calorie burns. That's part of the reason why people are often advised to only eat back a portion of their exercise calories.
  • I prefer to work through DOMS unless it's absolutely crippling. I find that the additional workout gets things loosened up and helps dissipate it sooner. Don't worry - as your body adapts to the workouts, the DOMS will go away completely (or almost completely). Shouldn't take more than a couple weeks.
  • Sure it makes sense. If you were to put a bucket on the scale, weight it, then pour a half gallon of water into it, you'd expect it to immediately weigh about four pounds more from the weight of the water.
  • Sometimes.
  • Time to bounce this one in again:
  • And in other news, those who are allergic to <insert food here> shouldn't eat <insert food here>. I'd think that would just fall under common sense. There are also lactose-free dairy products which wouldn't present a problem to those with lactose intolerance. Fairlife milk comes to mind immediately.
  • Great for the muscles underneath, but do absolutely nothing to get rid of the fat. You lose the fat by sustained caloric deficit, or (as others have mentioned) by recomp.
  • All I know is that if I was eating in a way that made me miserable and irritable, I probably wouldn't last long on it. The best diet is the one you can stick to and enjoy as much as possible. No need to cut carbs or "eat clean" (which is a ridiculous, subjective phrase anyway).
  • Smith machines are useful - for hanging my towel on. :D And I perceive more of a stigma around Smith machine use than I do elliptical use - so there's that.
  • Scientific studies have conclusively proven otherwise. So no. As to the OP, I'm more of a Diet Coke fan than Coke Zero. I'll give the new one a try, but Coca-Cola hasn't exactly had resounding success with their reformulations in the past (anybody remember "New Coke" back in the day?)
  • Do you realize how little training doctors actually get in nutrition? https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2430660/
  • Nobody's linked it yet? Great explanation here: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/819055/setting-your-calorie-and-macro-targets/p1
  • The bolded is worthwhile advice (although the rest of the post isn't). As long as one makes sure their sources are reliable "real experts" and not fearmongering crackpot pseudoscientists like Taubes, Lustig or Mercola. Junk scientists are worse than Dr. Oz.
  • Be sure to read the entire back and forth between Menno Henselmans and Eric Helms in this follow-up article: http://bayesianbodybuilding.com/eric-helms-protein/ It's not as clear cut as it seems.
  • No. http://atlargenutrition.com/is-there-a-limit-to-how-much-protein-the-body-can-use-in-a-single-meal/ (Research review by Alan Aragon - study references included)
  • Just think of all the calories you'd burn having an epileptic seizure for 30 minutes! :D
  • The chemical composition of HFCS is virtually identical to that of sucrose or honey, and it is metabolized by the body the exact same way as any other simple sugar. http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/research-review/straight-talk-about-high-fructose-corn-syrup-what-it-is-and-what-it-aint-research-review.html/
  • It's something more imagined than actual. Like the countless threads about people who walk into a gym for the first time and feel they're being "judged" if anybody so much as casts an eye in their direction.
  • ^ An internal conversation I have with myself every time I get on my mountain bike. :)
  • All good points. I don't like them simply because I don't enjoy using them. I'd prefer to run (outdoors or treadmill) or bicycle (outdoors or stationary), I enjoy both of those activities more. But from a point of getting a cardio workout in and burning calories, there's nothing whatsoever wrong with an elliptical machine.…
  • This is a perfect example of why Beachbody coaches shouldn't be giving out any information about nutrition or training, and just stick to peddling their Snakeoilogy. Of course you're correct and she has no idea what she's talking about. If you increase your calories, your macros are going to increase commensurately. If you…
  • Trendweight.com. But you have to have either a compatible wi-fi scale or a (free) Fitbit account, where you enter your weight manually.
  • Bodyrecomposition.com has tons of evidence-based articles about fat loss, training, nutrition, etc. - many with links/references to studies. It's a gold mine of information. Another excellent source (but not free) is Alan Aragon's Research Review. I won't link to it since it's a pay site (even though I have no affiliation…
  • And as Sidesteel said, you can't look at substrate utilization in a vacuum. The "fat burning zone" has been proven to be a myth again and again. It's broscience. Actually, the time the body burns the highest percentage of fat is when at rest. So technically, for the most effective fat burning, one should just sleep all…
  • He's under the mistaken assumption that your digestive system/metabolism go to sleep when you do. Lots of people believe that derp. The truth is that your body works 24 hours a day. Meal timing is completely irrelevant except for personal preference.
