I turned 59 in January and didn't get started until I was 57 and will continue lifting as long as I am physically able. I have seen men and women in their 70's and a few in their 80's still lifting! A 75 year old lady deadlifted 275 lbs. BELTLESS at a powerlifting meet!

I just competed at my 8th meet last Sunday and did a 9 week program. By the 7th week, I started to get a little exhausted, but was able to complete it with no problems. Just make sure you take at least 3-4 days off prior to your meet so you can rest

Update: 1RM is now 248 lbs.

I'm 59 and I've been bulking since last October and my biceps are 13.5"

As others have mentioned, plan ahead what you would be ordering before eating out and lift weights! Since I started eating clean, I don't crave junk food like I used to.
-
I do the same thing!

Maybe your wife is having the same issues as I did when I tried numerous times to try to lose weight. I weighed 166 lbs. and would drop to 160 lb. then couldn't seem to lose any more so I would give up. Finally I was determined to lose weight after I lost 5 lbs. before I went on a trip overseas, then another 4 lbs. during…

I just walk on the treadmill for 10-15 minutes

As soon as I started doing minimal cardio and started lifting weights, the weight came off easily and quickly

Yes, I gave up diet soda in 2014 when I started my weight loss journey and it made a huge difference in weight loss. I was also no longer bloated, rarely crave any soda and don't have as strong craving for sugar. I only drink regular soda when I'm dining out.

I turned 59 last month and have been bulking since October 2016 and gained a significant amount of muscle. You CAN add muscle if you diet correctly and keep the weight gain to no more than 1/2 lb./week. I'm a powerlifter and literally added 60 lbs. to my total in competition in only 3 months and over 100 lbs. in a year!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXoS15rybY4&feature=youtu.be 245 lb. squat PR 5 days out until I step on the platform!

I stretch, then lift, then do minimal cardio afterwards. But I lift heavy and do squats/bench/deadlifts all in 1 session 2x/week in addition to light upper/lower workouts. Light cardio after lifting has completely eliminated any muscle soreness for me

I workout alone. I've gotten to know a few of the guys at the gym and I have no problem asking them for an occasional spot. One even told me if he's at the gym when I'm benching, I can always ask him to give me a lift-off and spot for me
-
I only go there for cardio. I belong to another gym that doesn't have strict rules

Feel free to add me. I started lifting weights, then progressed to powerlifting over 2 years ago. I'm prepping for my 8th powerlifting meet next Sunday!

You can always go to Planet Fitness  The one I go to has signs plastered all over the gym "no cell phones allowed except in the lobby"

Are you doing a 5x5 powerlifting program?
-

1 lb. per week is very reasonable. I stopped doing cheat meals over a year ago. If I want to indulge in something, I will and just incorporate it into my calories for the day. If I know I'm going out for a meal or want to eat something that has more calories than I usually consume, I will eat small, low carb/low fat meals.
-
I eat out once/week and always plan ahead for the day. I eat small, low carb/low fat meals before going out. I try to order something healthy (salmon, grilled chicken, etc). I can splurge too since I'm bulking and consuming 2200 calories. As long as you go back to your diet the next day, you will be fine. Remember, if you…

I'm a competitive powerlifter and my coach also helps me with my diet. He's done an amazing job! I'm the strongest I've ever been. I went through 6 other personal trainers and got so much crappy nutrition info before hiring my current coach. It got so overwhelming because there is so much conflicting info out there

Do you stretch BEFORE your workouts? Since I started stretching both before and after and walking on the treadmill, I can't remember the last time I was sore! And I lift heavy (Heavy squats/bench and light deadlifts 1x/week, heavy deadlifts, light squat and bench 1x/week plus one day of upper and one day of lower workouts…
