Personally, I love seeing heavier people in the gym. It tells me that they are actually doing something to make their life better instead of sitting around whining about how bad they feel. Kudos to all who brave the potential embarrassment to pursue a longer, happier, healthier life.

Good point here. If you weren't active before, back off to ~1 mile a day until you get better, then gradually add distance to your walks. It won't be long until you're doing 5 miles a day easily. Also, take a good look at your shoes. Good shoes make all the difference when walking or running.

Maybe. I have seen people cutting carbs absolutely go crazy with protein and fat intake. Results were frustrated people who lost no weight while craving the things they were cutting out of their diet.
