I have a few older relatives who believe that both yoga and meditation let in the devil and demons because you’re susceptible to evil whenever your mind is calm. I, uh, think that says something about their choices of stress-avoiding mechanisms.

You’re right about that your math. I’m 5’3” and was morbidly obese when I started at 202 pounds. But the poster’s main point was that a 33% weight loss in 6 months is not a healthy rate of loss.

I think it’s a combination of many of the things listed here (reddit skews younger than mfp, it’s easier to downvote/upvote without engaging, and even if you’re subscribed you’re likely to see only the most extreme posts because they get the most upvotes), but also the system of subreddits. When people get irritated with a…

Clearly I’m avoiding my other responsibilities today in favor of interesting internet rabbit holes. :D TIL that Canadian beef spends 2-6 months on feedlots (compared to 3-6 months in the US), and is finished primarily on barley instead of corn:…

Doh! My apologies for being the boorish American.

Can confirm their food is good, though the portion sizes and prices are exactly what you’d expect from looking at that menu and their list of locations. I’m going to try their impossible burger today, though I’ve been sick and lazy and thus don’t have enough calories available for the toppings I like, and I’ll only be able…

Clearly the answer is that we should all ditch Burger King and meet at The Counter, where there is something for (almost) everyone who has posted on this thread: https://www.thecounter.com/menu/index.php They do have gluten free options and vegan options, but they don’t yet have the gluten free vegan proteins. I’ll bring…

While it’s true that they spend the majority of their lives literally on pasture, most beef cattle are not eating grass for the majority of their lives. They’re weaned at around 8 months, sold to the feed lot around 12 months, and slaughtered at 15 to 18 months. Source: The US Beef Board, a pro-beef marketing association.…

I’ve been meaning to try the impossible burger for a while. I’m a meat eater, but I’ve been phasing out beef at home.

Does your doctor or medical group have a registered dietitian you could visit, or a GD intro class? I found that helpful. My medical group had mandatory check ins with the RD, which I resented at the time but were actually helpful. Walking is great for GD, if you’ve been cleared by your doctor. My best blood glucose…

That sounds scary, but fortunately the physics department at UIUC says it’s just an urban legend: https://van.physics.illinois.edu/qa/listing.php?id=31466&t=cell-phone-microwave-test The scale went haywire with a different microwave at a different house, too.
-
Many internet hugs to you-waiting for scary test results is agonizing! Is your current dietitian a registered dietitian? It’s pretty easy for someone to call themself a nutritionist. Maybe see whether your medical group has a registered dietitian who your doctor recommends.

Thanks. I’ve seen posts that reference using other apps, but I assumed they meant doing all their tracking in another app like cron. I’ll try adding pacer.

Curiouser and curiouser. I upped my MFP activity level to active, but added negative calorie adjustments to account for lazy days. Mfp and the watch now come close to agreeing most days (eg, the Watch says I burned 2,380 calories Saturday, and MFP gave me an allowance of 2,100 for my .5 lb/week goal). The weird exception…

For me there’s a big difference, and it seems like mfp doesn’t give me any extra calories for my non-workout Move calories no matter how many there are. My activity and logging have been inconsistent since I got the watch, so I don’t know how accurate the watch’s estimates are for me yet. As an example, my watch says that…

Sometimes even when a comma isn’t required, it really is necessary! I’m also married and female, so an altogether terrible candidate for the priesthood.
-
I like this idea. I’m not Catholic anymore, but when I was, a priest I really respected spoke about not treating Lent as a time of punishment but as an opportunity to improve ourselves by adding a healthy, loving, or giving habit. Edit because it read as though I used to be a priest. :)

I did the super sprint triathlon and met all of my goals! finish + less than an hour and a half + (I was 1:07) not last + My friend who talked us into this wants to do a sprint triathlon in September, and I’m super nervous but I’ll probably let her talk me into it. I mean, what else will I do with these shorts?

I have a workout buddy who is much more advanced than I am. We mainly do things together that we can do at our own pace, and encourage each other by text about our separate workouts. E.g., we’re training for the same triathlon, but her goal run pace is way (way, way) faster than mine, so we don’t even try to run outside…

Thanks for the tips! Fortunately, this race is in a pool. I’m definitely not up for an open water race yet. It’s actually meant as a sales pitch for their athletic center, so I may try to see if I can get a guest pass for coaching there.
-
I’m still chugging along! The race is in about 3 weeks, and I’m doing better with my swimming, but still can’t do 400 yards without a break. This is a very newbie-friendly race though, and the race director says that taking breaks is fine as long as we let people pass. I’ve been practicing at the Y, which doesn’t allow…

Was the dizziness hitting you out of nowhere when you were resting? Or was it more likely while you were active? Every once in a while lately, I’ll just be sitting minding my own business and suddenly get the roller coaster feeling and feel a bit “buzzy.” It’s most likely to happen on a day when I’ve really pushed myself…

Good point, thanks. I see my GP in February anyway and will check in with her about this and all the other fun 43 year old stuff. I think I get my first mammogram this year, whee!

The biggest difference I’ve noticed in my skiing since losing weight is that now I can sometimes get myself up after a fall without taking off my skis. But I was heavy when I learned to ski, so I never had that skill. If you could do it before, you probably still can now.

I’m bumping this because I want to rant that my periods are getting shorter, and not longer like I was promised. It was bad enough when it was 25 days throughout my 20s and 30s, but now it’s 18 days half the time. And somehow I’m still getting ovulation cravings and pain, even though I shouldn’t be ovulating with an 18 day…

Are you looking for snack foods, meals, or just foods that are vegan? I’m not vegan, but I’m working on adding more plant-based meals and snacks. I’m kind of stuck on beans and tofu for protein, so I’ll watch this thread for more ideas. I’m also really into soups and stews during winter. Moosewood Cooks at Home has a good…

Hi, your thread may have gotten lost in the post-holiday shuffle. There are plenty of helpful experienced posters on here who can help give you tips, but they’ll need more information to go on. What are your stats? (Height and weight) Are you using mfp to set your calorie goal? What is it? How are you measuring/weighing…

Your wedding pictures are lovely! You look beautiful and happy. I’m glad you decided to eat more yesterday, but from what you posted (ate 1500, exercised 600+), you still only netted 900 calories, which is not enough to sustain your health. Please find a therapist who can help you. In the long run, it’s a better use of…

Looks like a fun race! How much do you get for the referrals?

For me, it’s about noticing what actually helps vs. what seems helpful in the moment but makes me feel worse long term. For example, when I’m really stressed I want to eat lots of treats, stay inside and binge-watch Netflix, and avoid social situations. But that all makes me feel lousier at the end of the day. What…
