No, but I’ll give it a try next time I’m in the water. Sunday is a bike day, and my next water day is Tuesday. Right now we’re doing two swim days/week instead of two run days like the plan calls for, because we’ve all felt confident that we can walk the 2 miles if we need to, but not so confident about swimming 16…

I do when I can. When I stop logging, I know I’m really down in the dumps.
-
Also, I don’t actually know how to do breast stroke. I just pretend I’m Kermit the frog whenever I need a breathing break and don’t want to backstroke.
-
Oh phew! MFP and family life colliding would be too weird. :) I swam again today and managed 500 yards (with a whole lotta breaks). I slowed down a lot and that helped, and I also made peace with just flipping over to backstroke when I felt like my breathing was annoying.

Thanks for the advice! Also, woah, in that last shot you look exactly like a cousin of mine. I’m trying to think of the least creepy or revealing way to ask whether you’re my cousin. If you have an older cousin Tina in Chicago, I’m her daughter.

This is where I was before I started lessons, but clearly I missed something important!

Roomate is American for flat mate or house mate.

For a while I was taking lessons with someone who primarily teaches kids in her home pool. She runs an adult class, but doesn’t advertise it. Maybe try contacting whoever teaches the local kids to see if they’ll do adult lessons?

Thanks! I’m poking around on the US Masters Swim site for more info, and my husband who swam competitively in high school is going to (try to) give me tips. When I breathe every other stroke I feel like I’m hyperventilating, when I breathe every 4th I feel like I’m running out of breath, and when I try every 3rd I get…

I weigh daily, right after waking up. I use Happy Scale to track the moving average. My weight always pops up a few pounds at ovulation and drops again right before I start my period.
-
Does your husband know about your past history with eating disorders? Is that why he’s managing your weight loss (telling you how much to eat/exercise and hiding the scale while you weigh in)? It sounds like he’s trying to be helpful, but really missing the mark. It would be a good idea to read the stickies and learn some…

MFP seems to have fewer posters these days, but I bet if you posted on r/fitness or r/disabilityfitness you would get more answers. Reddit can be a cesspool but it’s great for bringing niche groups together.

I had a bout of diverticulitis about 5 years ago. It was agonizing! Are you still experiencing symptoms? I ask because your list of foods to avoid is generally considered out of date now. But! Please don’t take my word for it. Check with your doctor or registered dietitian first. My doctor had me on a no-to-low fiber diet…

I have the opposite problem with my garmin vivosmart HR. I have a fairly low average heart rate (55, according to the garmin), so I don’t usually get extra calories no matter how far I walk. The exception for me is when I use my asthma inhaler before a strenuous hike, which bumps my heart rate for the next 4 hours. Add in…

Another (former) Chicagoan here. As far as I know, no one actually eats a Chicago-style hot dog, but pretty much everyone eats Chicago-style pizza. My husband and children think it’s disgusting. Now I’m in Silicon Valley, so I guess our weird food is farm to table everything.

I don’t usually bake or cornstarch the tofu for a stir fry, but I do use super firm or extra firm tofu for that one. I also use firm or extra firm tofu when I make tofu & chickpea curry from the Moosewood Restaurant Family cookbook, with really delicious homemade fake naan (I’m way too lazy to make real homemade naan, and…

To mash up this thread and the “what stage are you in” thread, I don’t know what the plans are, because all I want for mother’s day is not to be the person in charge of making/coordinating all the plans.

America’s Test kitchen has a stovetop Mac & cheese that’s quite good in their 30 minute cookbook . The secret is evaporated milk. Of course nothing in the ATK 30 minute cookbook actually takes 30 minutes start to finish because I don’t yet have a personal prep cook. Op, I agree with you that for the most part—convenience…

When I saw your post I checked your profile for your location, because this season has been unusually horrendous for allergies locally (SF Bay Area). My oldest kid hasn’t had a problem with environmental allergies for 7 years, and regularly has swollen red, itchy eyes this last month. My youngest kid’s teacher has had…

When the moon is up during the morning. Especially those few days before the new moon when it’s a small crescent and rose just enough before sunrise that you can see it for an hour or two before it gets too high and the sky gets too light.

This is similar to the recipe I use, except it goes 450 for 30-35 minutes to crisp the skin, and then turn the oven off for an additional 30 minutes to finish cooking. Starting at 500 must make amazing skin (and a very smoky kitchen).

How long do you let it rest? I’ll definitely try this next time. My kids have an inconvenient age gap where one is in middle school and needs to be picked up 20 minutes away at 5, and the other is in kindergarten and needs to start bedtime at 6:30. (For the next 5 weeks, and then this sport season is over.) So I need to…

Thanks for all the suggestions-in the end I went with my boring usual because I have to pick up a kid at 5 and eat at 6. The America’s Test Kitchen weeknight chicken finishes in the oven after you turn it off, so I can start it and then turn off the oven.

Here’s my confession: the one time I tried making brick chicken (spatchcocked and then weighed down and high roasted on the grill) I set it on fire. But who can resist a unanimous vote? Edit because I was trying to get everyone ready for school and post and managed to switch unanimous and anonymous. Clearly I need more…

I noticed a car with the hood up in the school pickup line, realized they might need a jump, asked, and gave them a jump. Really just basic decency and not something to be so proud of, but normally I’m oblivious and focused on my own life, and would have gotten halfway home before suddenly realizing that I should have…

I was a super picky kid, but I’ve (mostly) gotten over it. I still don’t like foods that have a combination of a slick & chewy texture. So mushrooms are still out except in tiny pieces. Scallops are iffy. Sashimi is hit or miss, and it’s expensive so I usually don’t even bother to try. Pad Thai was hard to try, but now I…

That’s my experience too-that the sizes listed on the chart are generally too big for me. I chalk it up to being an apple shape, and have started buying based on my hip or chest measurement instead of my waist measurement (I also don’t usually buy things that are meant to be fitted in the waist, as that’s not a good look…

The wrinkles around my husband’s eyes when he smiles. He’s had them since he was 20.

Title9sports.com has some great bras and a rating system to let you know each bra’s support level. They carry a lot of Brooks and Moving Comfort, and have some of their own brand. They’re definitely pricey, but high quality.
