This is probably my favourite obesity image ever: http://www.shiftn.com/obesity/Full-Map.html? Obesity is ridiculously complex, multi-faceted, and determined by a huge number of factors: evolutionary, biological, social, cultural, environmental, and psychological. To say that obesity (and weight loss) is a matter of…

I'm assuming this involves only drinking water for five days? BAD IDEA, unless recommended (and closely monitored by) a physician ... Your body needs food to fuel your brain and internal organs. Just eat a balanced, healthy diet instead.

Breakfast - overnight oats Fast dinners - eggs on toast! Healthy alternative - 3-ingredient banana ice cream (frozen banana + milk + peanut butter = yum!)

Hey! - congratulations on making the first step! I'm a clinical psychology student - I can't make any official recommendations, but I can say that exercise is one of the most powerful tools to boost your mood. It's better than therapy - even better than drugs. It doesn't have to be intense or high-impact ... Swimming/water…

Also a fellow sweet-tooth! (And in STEM! Yay! Science!)

I'm not familiar with the Daniel fast - is it vegetarian or vegan? There are a lot of really good plant-based cookbooks out right now! - I try a different one each week from my local library. Some of my favourites are ... - The Love and Lemons Cookbook - Isa Does It - My New Roots - Oh She Glows - Plenty - The Sprouted…

Well, that's what they say ... But if you look at most of the marketing/media around it, it's more like "skinny + toned is the new skinny" ... So it's not enough to be slim any more; you must also squat dat booty. (Just check out the popular Instagram fitness pages ...) Any Kinesiology student will tell you fitness is…

Wow, Debbie! You're quite the fighter and amazing inspiration! Spinal Cord Canada (http://sci-can.ca) has some good resources, and has a reputation for being a great organization. I don't know if this applies to you, but hopefully it helps!

Hi, Winnipeg! Saskatoon here! :-) -- nice to meet another Canuck! Feel free to add me if you'd like!

Morning workouts are a great idea! I'm just getting off a week of 2:30 nights (paper after paper after report) - and am trying to get my sleep back to a quasi-normal schedule. 7AM gym dates would be brilliant

Yay! Fellow grad students! - Hello, my people! I have an MPH, and am currently completing a double PhD in Kinesiology and Clinical Health Psychology. My focus is on health behaviour and physical activity promotion! (The great irony: I'm too busy researching exercise to exercise myself!) I've just joined MFP, with the goals…

Aw! I love your kiddo! - too cute!!! Best of luck!!

Couch-to-5K is a great beginner program! Remeber it's self-paced ... So, if you need to repeat a week (or repeat a week three time!) you're totally allowed!

You should probably consult with a physio, just to ensure there isn't something wrong with your back! It will probably cost a bit ($60 in Canada, typically) ... But, so far as backs are concerned, it's definitely better safe than sorry!

I can do 180 comfortably (10 reps) - maximum attempted was 225, though probably could have pressed more when I was at my peak fitness. (Thank-you, rowing!)

There are professionals ... And then there are professionals. I'm not sure how it works in other countries, but in Canada we have regulatory bodies ("Colleges") that professionals must register with. The purpose of the College is to protect the public from harm. They do this by only registering people who meet professional…

Ah! My apologies ... That was me not reading carefully enough. The national average for sodium consumption is 3400 mg/day. The current goal is 2300 mg/day. http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/nutrition/sodium/index-eng.php Recommendations by age group here:…

Yikes! That's frustrating :-( Have you heard of the thermostat theory of weight/weight maintenance?

Hi, Amanda! Welcome! I'm also new here - nice to meet another student! I'm completing a MD-PhD program (or, the equivalent of ... long story), and work long days as wells. I started MFP just a few days ago to hold myself accountable for healthy eating and regular exercise. (The great irony is that I'm an expert in physical…

Like most things, it's a matter of moderation -- even water can kill you if you drink too much. Sodium is super important for physiological functions - like nerve impulses and regulating body fluids. The better question is "How much sodium is too much?" -- which is a ripe debate. The Canadian food guide suggests 3400…
