Er, thank you but I'm not very hungry right now.

Ok, got it. I agree the science is flaky on both sides and I think that if Big Organics is engaging in this type of bad science and marketing woo similar to the tobacco industry, then why don't people see that Big GMO is also doing likewise? Big GMO has ten times the money and resources that Big Organics has. Your example…

Don't know what the point is from those saying they've never ( as far as they know) offended anyone by turning down treats in the office. Are you all saying that because you haven't encountered it, it doesn't or can't happen? Or what?
-
I'm the exact same way. If we didn't plan out our meals for the week, I'd be a short order cook for my kids. We'd waste a ton of food and money. Plus I wouldn't be able to ensure adequate nutrition/balanced diet if I didn't do meal planning.

Why are some bones robust or gracile? The genetics portion is just XX or XY. Men are genetically predisposed to more robust bones than women. Anything beyond that is down to behaviour...as in the type of physical activity or lack thereof.
-
Completely agree with you. I went to college to get out of poverty.
-
I agree with you as I grew up pretty hungry. Only thing I'd say is that during the times I was in poverty as a young independent teen not living at "home", I could not get to a food bank ( no money for transportation) and was turned away by a soup kitchen as I was not "officially" homeless. So just wanted to say it's not…

An interesting opinion piece published recently called "The Pursuit of Pleasure is a Modern Day Addiction" https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/sep/09/pursuit-of-pleasure-modern-day-addiction In this piece, the author argues that it's the dopamine our brains release when we do something pleasurable which is the…

Actually the science flip flops about having the odd drink now and then. Some years a study will say there are health benefits to a glass of red wine with dinner, other times the science says any amount of alcohol at all is bad. If you are referring to binge drinking...as in getting drunk...no that is no longer socially…

This is what cake culture could become if it got a healthy makeover. I have no issues with bonding over food at work, I just have the opinion that it's not nice to offer people unhealthy foods and then get all offended if they refuse to eat it. Far nicer to offer a person something that is good for them as well as being…

Darn auto correct. Please read "Tabacco" for "Tabasco"
-
It wasn't all marketing and advertising guys. The tobacco industry funded a whole cadre of doctors and scientific researchers specifically to fabricate scientific evidence that smoking was not bad for you. It was called the Tabbacco Industry Research Council. They also formed a trade group called the Tabasco Institute…

So for anyone who would like to read more on "cake culture" and its impact from a public health viewpoint s well as tips to beat it, here is a quick article from a health insurance webpage: https://www.aviva.co.uk/private-health-insurance/health-tips/healthy-eating/article/beat-office-cake-culture/.

Not really a straw man as studies have shown that being overweight is as bad as smoking insofar as risk of premature death. Cake can make you overweight...especially as part of a program of unhealthy snacking whilst doing sedentary activities. Both obesity and smoking increase the risk of cancer. It doesn't matter how the…

Oh dear Carlos, you do not know what an analogy is? Should I define that for you?
-
This is really funny. The opinion that is unpopular on a calorie counting, weight watching forum is one that thinks cake culture in unhealthy and not nice. Whereas the opinion that IS popular is the cake culture is perfectly healthy (in moderation and with personal accountability) and representative of people being nice…
-
So many people have been socialised by cake culture into thinking it's a nice gesture or a kindness when people bring in unhealthy snacks. They literally cannot open their minds enough to look at it objectively. It used to be considered a polite thing to offer a person a cigarette even at work....a nice thing to do...now…
-
I never said it was a personal vendetta or anything of the sort. All I've done is point out that it's a cultural practice, "cake culture" which is by definition impersonal. Also that it is unhealthy and imho not a nice thing to do. Yes moderation is key in all things BUT who needs to snack on unhealthy foods while doing a…
-
Ok, but the fact you say no, does not mean that the pressure to conform to a cultural norm...eating the cake or drinking...does not exist. It does exist and it encourages a behaviour that is not healthy.
-
Really? So would you apply this thought process to other cultural practices which encourage certain behaviours? Such as encouraging young teens to engage in drinking, but when they do drink to say it's all their fault for swallowing the alcoholic beverages?
-
Sorry, the definition of "pretend" is to act like you're doing something, in this case eating, without actually doing it. So yes, I pretend to eat without actually eating it. I'm not sure what you don't understand about it. Also, all I've said is that it is both unhealthy and not a nice thing. I wouldn't really call using…
-
I don't. But I see and watch others get pressured into eating this stuff when they'd obviously rather wouldn't.
-
I didn't brand the cake culture as unhealthy, many health practitioners have already done so and published numerous opinion pieces on it. I just happen to agree with them. In other words, it's not just me and I didn't come up with "cake culture" myself.

Interestingly breast milk has 7g sugars for 100g milk, but baby formula has 34g sugar for 100g. And studies have said that breastfed babies are less likely to grow up and become obese compared to formula fed babies. Maybe it's not an addiction so much as training the palate of babies to not only get used to high sugar…

As a point of fact, the majority of heroin addicts are only able to eliminate heroin if they are weaned off and purposely addicted to another opiate. Heroin was actually introduced to treat morphine addiction. Since heroin became a problem, there have been numerous opioids introduced that are used to "treat" heroin…

Just because we cannot clearly define exactly how someone can or cannot be addicted to sugar, doesn't mean it does not exist or that it exists. It is to my mind, a grey area of possibility. They used to think people couldn't get addicted to sex. If you were addicted to sex, it was viewed as a mental illness because sex was…

Lol. I hate sweets. Cannot stomach icing...so sweet my teeth hurt. So to me, it's torture to have to pretend to eat some kind of gooey treat. Blerg.

Me too although it's not by choice it's due to injury and age. Can't run, can't do high impact, can't cycle, etc. So I walk.

I personally think this cake culture is a damaging maladaption. It's not a "nice" thing to bring in fat pills. It's definitely a bad thing to do. But because we have a cake culture in offices, it's almost expected that everyone take their turn bringing in sugary, fatty foods with which to tempt each other. Also to order…

Thank you for posting this. Yes, you bring up a good point. The organic label by itself isn't a marker of higher welfare standards in the US...I know I also looked for "free range" labels and bought from researched farms/sources. The two did often happen to overlap...so your article is a good add because I did not realise…
