Personal responsibility is all well and good (and truly important) and will be enough in a certain segment of the population but if you want to actually fix the problem of systemic obesity I think public health planning and environmental factors make a ton of sense. Why not work to create environments where people…

@packerjohn - do you know if obesity rates in your area have risen more slowly compared to other areas or at the same rate? To me it seems like common sense that communities that encourage activity would have lower rates than other areas - but I would love to know if the data backs that up. The only real data I've found…

Just curious - is there a thread where people post their daily schedules? Things like that always help me see ways that I could be optimizing my time better.

I'm actually a work from home mom and the above is also my struggle. I am not a morning person at all and have attempted to get up at 4:30 for the last several years. I do really well for a month and then fall off for a month or two and then start the cycle over. I've heard it all gets easier when kids get to elementary…

This is my DH and I as well. He gets double/triple portions of everything and I fill the remainder of my plate with salad or green veggies. That way we finish at around the same time. And finding snack foods that I don't like has been so important. I am completely indifferent to both gummy bears and popcorn and DH loves…

My kid was messing with my laptop and somehow quoted and sent the above post- feel free to disregard :) In general I think places established before WWII and the highway system in general are going to be much more conducive to walkability. I love the post about airconditioning too. Think of how different and convenient our…

Hi @Celeryfish - have you tried eating high satiety foods that will really keep you full? Things that are high in good fats or protein? I've been having afternoon snack cravings lately so today i mashed up half an avocado and ate it as a sandwich topping (Fish burger). I also ate an ounce of cheese cut into little squares…

Why not both? :)

@wackyfunster - that psych today story was so interesting! Thanks for sharing. Incentive to turn down the thermostat too :) Better for the planet, my wallet, and maybe my weight ?

FWIW- it might not be a difference in health for you, eating it. But it does make a difference in the health of the people growing it and there is evidence that it makes an environmental impact as well (organically prepared soils tend to be more fertile, etc).…

This thread inspired me to have avocado with my lunch! Fish sandwich with salsa and avocado - so good!!! Thanks guys. Also - Avocado toast with a little citrus infused olive oil, hot pepper flakes and sea salt - the best snack in the world.

The one I grew up in was in Indiana and was built in the 60s. The one I lived in in NC was built in the 80s. I'm now in OH and before we bought this house in our walkable small town, we were in a neighborhood that had sidewalks within the neighborhood bounds but to leave the neighborhood (for shopping, dining, etc) you…

I nudged into the BMI "overweight" range for the first time in my life last month (which is why I'm here). and I'm in my late 30s. After growing up with a yo-yo dieter I spent my college years slowly developing what I think of as my personal food culture. Since my mid 20s I've cooked from scratch (pizza dough, pasta, baked…

@lemurcat12 - I'm actually similar to you. I lived in a city through my 20s and then a job changed necessitated a move to a suburb with no sidewalks (not even in our neighborhood) - Gained 10 pounds. We've recently moved again and we purposely bought a house in an old small town that pre-exists the nearby large-ish city.…

These might not pertain to you but, just in case, I will mention them. My mother has been a yo-yoer for the last 40 years but she has maintained for almost two years now and this is what she did differently this time - She lost much slower. She actually set her daily calorie goal to what it would be at her desired…

I take the no-burp kind. It actually helps with dry eyes/skin in the winter and with achy joints in general.

Gallowmere1984 - I don't think it is "falling so far" as much as adjusting to the ever-changing infrastructure/society. Our grand/great grandparents didn't get fat because they likely worked more physical jobs and got more activity because their towns/lives were actually structured that way. My grandfather was a milk man…

Well if it is impossible for him to keep food temptations anywhere but their house- then it is what it is. But hopefully he will also hear OP's words if she tells him how hard it is for her and asks for his help in coming up with solutions. (I agree with many previous posters that she shouldn't try to "fix" his eating -…

I feel like I need to disagree with your disagreement :) There is a lot of science out there that suggests willpower is a finite resource (I know there are some reproducibility issues - but still there is a huge body of literature that indicate people can't use willpower indefinitely). Maybe the OP can approach her spouse…

ooh- I love meal planning! It is the key to keeping my entire life going :) I have a husband with insanely awesome metabolism and two small children and I am only willing to cook one meal a night. I've built up a collection of recipes that I know my family likes and I have work-arounds to keep within my daily targets. But…

Not weird at all. Mine is similar - a tortilla rolled up with melted American cheese in it (I call them tacky quesadillas). One for a snack isn't bad, but then an hour later I'll eat another and then I'll have one for afternoon snack too. I stopped buying tortillas a few weeks ago.

I have a lot of rules :# - but I think of them as good "eating hygiene" (like sleep hygiene but for better eating practices.) -Never eat in a car -always eat at a table -water or tea all day -eat with people whenever possible -nutritional diversity rules (eat a rainbow every day, don't repeat proteins for meals) -music, a…

This thread has inspired me - I'm buying it this week to give it a try (though a bit skeptical because Haagen Daz Caramel Cone is my holy grail). I had 290 calories left yesterday and nothing to eat for dessert. This thread was practically taunting me!

I have always enjoyed wine with my dinner and make sure to fit it into my daily calories - I will say however, it is the one thing that I measure every. single. time. I have an ounce or two of wine most nights and take tiny sips while I eat. It hasn't hindered me yet, but I'm fairly early in my weight loss. If I find…

It took me six months last year to lose 5 pounds (January to June). Holidays and work stress had me gain almost 10 pounds this winter so here I am again :) Can you just hang on until spring? I find that I have a hard time shedding weight in winter, especially when I'm close to goal. Once it is light and warm out I…

we enjoy our drinks in my house :) I never cut it completely but when I'm being more careful with my calorie intake I tend to pour myself 2 oz. with dinner and just barely sip it through the meal. I like wine with dinner a few nights a week. DH and I also like a cocktail on weekends so I just have him fix me a half…

He says you might have to go back to "Great Great Great", etc. but basically back to when food is made with ingredients straight from the earth as opposed to developed in a lab (he uses yogurt and bread as examples). I think you can lose weight eating anything - but I do think whole foods are fantastic for nutrition.…

I see my quotation marks did not come off as I'd hoped :) I put both fake and real food in quotes - because they all contain calories and thus do the same job and are both food. I agree the CICO works for straight up weight loss - but since there were a lot of "it doesn't matter what you eat" comments I was trying to add a…
