  • Sorry, but I don't read him that way. He's reminding her to workout, etc. but he doesn't do anything himself? I read that as laziness. The OP says it confuses her and she is on the mark. It would rub me the wrong way if someone badly in need of exercise and other help was reminding me to work. He needs to get active…
  • I've read this a million times on MFP: think of this as a lifestyle, not a diet. Think of it as a permanent lifestyle. Include foods you enjoy -- just make them fit into your calorie goal for the day. Plan a small sweet for dessert. You can also have treats that aren't calorie bombs -- yogurt with fruit, for example. If…
  • Well, no. Carbs are one of the essential food groups.
  • I had a similar experience to your husband, but it was just my blood pressure and not a migraine or stroke or heart issue -- they ran all kinds of tests on me too. It happened to me twice in 10 days, and without rehashing the whole thing, yes, caffeine was definitely the reason. I did regularly drink coffee, but on those…
  • I had a severe reaction to caffeine and went to the hospital because my blood pressure was close to 200/100 (normal is 120/80). Water and caffeinated drinks act differently. Caffeine constricts your blood vessels, which makes your blood pressure go up temporarily. Water doesn't do that. I was told water is one of the most…
  • I agree with people who asked about protein and fat. You can get fat from avocados, seeds and nuts. Where are you going to get the mainstay of your protein -- from beans? You have to cook a lot of beans that provide good protein in order to make them edible (like lentils, red beans, chickpeas, etc.)
  • I'm in maintenance now, but when I was losing weight I didn't tell people mainly for one reason -- I knew I would get all kinds of "advice" I didn't need or want, or comments saying I didn't need to lose any more weight (yes, I did, I was obese). The only social issue: I did cut some food out for medical reasons. In those…
  • I'm 5'4", 63 year old female, 136 pounds. I lost 41 pounds last year using MFP and have maintained since November 2016. I give myself a 5 pound range, around 140 (145 is my overweight line). I exercise by walking every day about 60-90 minutes. Once in a while I jog. I think my maintenance calories are 1540, but I usually…
  • I should have written this before. My tendonitis problem might have been different from yours since mine came from a medicine reaction. See a doctor if you haven't done so. I hope your doctor is more help than mine was to me. I was in pain for weeks and then it slowly got better, but your situation might be different. I…
  • It sounds like you're under a lot of stress from the PhD work. The part-time job also adds stress and the long distance in your relationship may be adding stress, too. Your food problem with few treats is only adding more stress. If you don't need the money from the part-time job, why not resign and eliminate that stress?…
  • Last year I developed terrible, painful tendonitis in my arms and shoulders because of a reaction to an antibiotic (Levaquin). It lasted 4-5 months. Resting my arms and shoulders or doing as little as possible with them worked best for me. It was very frustrating, but I feel lucky to have gotten through it without tendon…
  • Exercise makes tiny tears in your tissues. Your body will retain fluid to heal them. If you're doing a lot of exercise you normally haven't done, fluid retention is probably one reason the scale shows slow weight loss. Also, how tall are you? If you are a normal weight for your body, you will probably lose more slowly.
  • I went to the hospital a month ago because I had a severe reaction to caffeine. They talked to me about drinking enough water and said coffee and water are not the same as far as hydrating yourself.
  • I agree with this -- I like plain food, too. One person's penitent food is another's enjoyment. We all have different taste.
  • I make several small takeout spinach salads at the local grocery and load them with shredded carrots, black olives, chick peas, etc. Each salad is enough for one meal. I also buy Amy's brand canned soup (low sodium). That's an organic brand that's sold in most grocery stores inthe US and on Amazon. I agree with the people…
  • I agree with this post. If you haven't done so, check the scale's batteries or buy a new scale. My one-year-old digital scale has been giving me readings that are suddenly way off, even though I've replaced the batteries. That might be the case for you, too. I hope you don't have a medical problem, but it looks like you're…
  • The school should give you an alternate exercise since you have a physical problem. Ask them if they will accept a form signed by your doctor and if they will give you an alternate exercise. FYI, situps are not good for people with back problems -- they can make tiny fractures in the spine over a long period of time.
  • One last thing, If/when you buy them again when you were conflicted about it, you can always throw them away on the drive home -- pull over somewhere and put them in a trashcan or throw them out the window for the birds.
  • I stopped buying the cookies when my doctor told me my cholesterol was so high I was at risk of a heart attack or stroke. He also wanted me to go on blood pressure meds. There's nothing like very real, scary health problems to take the fun out of eating a package of cookies. I lost 40 pounds and have kept it off since Nov.…
  • A lot of people today are overweight and obese. This is what most of us think as "normal." In addition, you have been overweight for a while now, so they are used to seeing you that way. You can stop these discussions if you don't offer information -- especially details like 10 pounds vs 30 pounds. People are just going to…
  • The article is really interesting. I got a tape measure and found my wasit is 35 inches. That's more than half my height (I am 64 inches tall), so that puts me in the danger zone according to the article. I'm a 5'4" woman who weighs 136 pounds and have a normal BMI. I don't really want to lose too much more weight, but…
  • I haven't read all the replies, so somebody may have suggested these things. I love lentils. I'm a widow and make them just for myself. I cook an entire bag in a large soup pot (please keep reading even though you said you don't want to do this). Bring to a boil, then simmer on low with a lid until they are soft. THEN turn…
  • I haven't read through all the pages of comments, so I don't know if someone mentioned Vitamin D. Low Vitamin D can result in many problems, including depression or a down in the dumps mood. Here's one article, but there are thousands more online: http://www.prevention.com/health/symptoms-of-vitamin-d-deficiency/slide/5…
  • If you like crunchy things like apples and celery, can you eat salads with celery, carrots, green peppers, etc. and add higher calorie food like almonds or walnuts, black olives, avocado slices and a creamy salad dressing? What about a nut butter like almond or cashew on crackers? I had a high-calorie Triscuit mini-binge…
  • I'm guessing many people stay slim because food is not a priority the way it is for foodies/people who grow overweight/obese. People who stay slim find their interests and enjoyments and escapes in other things. They've also learned how to say "no" to themselves and other people.
  • Men tend to lose weight faster than women because they have more lean muscle.
  • I'm on a computer. This might be different on a phone. Go to home, then check-in, then edit previous entries (a tiny line). You can delete an entry there and then reenter it.
  • I'm sure your fiancé has many wonderful qualities, but he also sounds depressed and childlike. He sounds very overweight and his refusal to see a doctor and do something about his health problems would give me second thoughts about spending my life with him. Are you ready to be a widow when he has a midlife heart attack?…
  • It might be a caffeine withdrawal headache, which can last for several days. If you're going on and off caffeine, you might be giving yourself several headaches. Do you take any over the counter headache meds (aspirin, Ibuprofen, Excedrin, etc.) ? Some people get rebound headaches when the med wears off in their system, so…
  • If it's something I don't want to eat later plus I know I have no control, I throw it away. I am not a human trashcan. I am not responsible for eating everything in sight.
