  • I eat a lot of lentils. One cup has 731 mg potassium,18 grams of protein and 230 calories. I eat them with whatever vegetables I have around or big salads. I try to eat spinach, bananas, and many other foods with potassium. When you look up food entries on MFP, put USDA by the food name and you are more likely to get the…
  • Nice loss, congrats! You're looking great!
  • Can you tell her you're in a program here on MFP to lose weight and get healthy, it will take some time but you're working on it, and say her support would mean a lot to you? Other than that, I agree with others who said people will say all kinds of things, both good and bad, and we have to learn to stand aside from it. My…
  • Go in the morning. Do everything to get ready the night before -- clothes laid out/packed, food and everything else planned and ready so you can just stand up and stumble out to your car. Prep helps me with both the gym and going to an early morning college class -- I'm cranky and not a morning person at all. A lot of it…
  • You look wonderful! Congrats on your life changing work!
  • I married when I was 18 and divorced him by 21. Everybody expected us to get married. It was a huge mistake. My second marriage in mid-life was much happier. Do volunteer work for an issue you really care about -- it is also a way to find people you genuinely have a lot in common with. That's how I met my second husband…
  • Cooked apples, cored and stuffed with a little brown sugar and cinnamon.
  • ^^ I agree, people are stupid sometimes. My doctor recently told me, "You're still losing weight. Don't lose any more." I said, "Why? I'm only 5 pounds from being overweight." He didn't answer. To the OP, I don't know the answer. I find it annoying, too. Tell them your doctor is happy (unless your doofus doctor is the one…
  • I don't feel embarrassed going to the gym -- but I've yet to go into the weights area where all the bros are. Can you go at a time when it is less crowded? Early in the morning?
  • Medical professionals don't all agree about sugar not being addictive. The Cleveland Clinic says it is biologically addictive. They are rated one of the best hospitals in the United States. https://health.clevelandclinic.org/2015/05/break-your-sugar-addiction-in-10-days-infographic/ Whether you want to argue about what…
  • I have a medical problem and cut way, way back on added sugar. The problem for me was to cut out trigger foods -- foods I couldn't stop eating and that took the place of food with better nutrition. I couldn't control eating these foods in moderation. More power to the people who have achieved moderation. Sugar is in almost…
  • You asked about recipes. That actually depends on what kind of food you prefer to eat. I make meals in batches. I will cook a soup pot of lentils (they have 18 grams of protein in one cup), let them simmer until soft, and eat with stir fry veggies, whatever I have around -- tomatoes, carrots, spinach or other greens. I…
  • I assume "got sick" means the flu. The shot doesn't give you the flu. The virus is dead. If you caught the flu on a year you got the shot, it was a different strain from the flu vaccine or you already had the virus and didn't have symptoms yet. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/misconceptions.htm Can a flu shot give you the…
  • I'm in maintenance now. When I was losing, I deliberately bought a pair of jeans that were too small and left them out as incentive. Every once in a while I would try them on until one day they fit. Return or not return is up to you. I would keep the skirt if I loved it and thought it would fit eventually.
  • I'm trying to up my potassium. If you search for MFP entries and put USDA by the item, you have a better chance of finding the potassium content (or any other nutrient). I agree to google food with potassium. Lentils are very high in potassium, as are many vegetables like spinach. Some yogurt is high in potassium, too.
  • Agree with ninerbuff. I've had a similar problem with blood pressure. Mine went up due to a caffeine intolerance and some other things and is back to normal now. Several people suggested I buy a blood pressure cuff so I could check it at home -- I didn't because I knew I would be checking it 24 hours a day. Another idea is…
  • Take the batteries out (if the scale is digital) and put them in your office/place of work/gym locker/other place not at home. Then put them in once a week or a few times a week at a planned time. Write your weigh-in days on your calendar. Edited to add that between weigh-ins, put the scale away where you won't see it (a…
  • Cool! I remember that story. :-) It upped my courage to take care of myself better in public places.
  • See your doctor if you're worried about mood problems related to diet. As other people have said, why limit the carbs to below 150g? Calories are king in weight control. I believe our brains run on glucose, which carbs provide. I eat loads of carbs in the form of vegetables, fruit, oatmeal, legumes, etc. I get anxious…
  • I did IF for a couple of weeks when I stalled losing weight. I did the 8 hour window from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The benefit was IF reduced my appetite by making me wait until 11 a.m. to eat and then not snack after 7 p.m. My weight loss stall ended and I began losing again. I was not in a real plateau -- I had simply been…
  • It's good to remember that we lose by calories, not the type of food. I eat loads of carbs (mostly in the form of vegetables, fruit, oatmeal, and legumes) and have had no problem losing weight. I stalled last year and tried intermittent fasting for a couple of weeks. I ate during an 8 hour window. It was rough the first…
  • I track sodium because I've had borderline high blood pressure and sodium can drive it up. However, I also try to drink water throughout the day and want enough sodium so I don't get depleted (sodium is an important electrolyte).
  • I'm interested in the cause of your problems and hope you will post an update after your labs. I also take Simvastatin and hope to get off it. If you take a multivitamin or B supplements, you might look into toxic reactions. I recently stopped taking a multivitamin because I was baffled about high blood pressure when mine…
  • I'm sorry about the thyroid cancer, but glad you finally got a diagnosis and treatment. I kind of feel like you do about food. I eat a diet that requires the minimum amount of prep: instant oatmeal with almonds and an apple for breakfast, sometimes canned soup (Amy's brand) and takeout salad for lunch, and some kind of…
  • Yes, this, "loose" weight drives me nuts.
  • write his/her name on the towel in magic marker
  • I eat instant oatmeal with 10-15 almonds and an apple or banana. My alternate breakfast is a cup of Silk Protein Nutmilk (10 grams of protein) with almonds and a piece of fruit.
  • I'm baffled by doctors who say ":no carbs." I'm guessing they mean bread, potatoes, rice, etc. and don't mean vegetables, legumes, and fruit, which are loaded with carbs.
  • Thanks, lorrp, I appreciate the reminder. I know what you said is true, but it's still jarring when my weight jumps like that. I do not want to gain it back!
