try walking around for a bit in the morning before eating breakfast. exercise increases insulin response, which allows glucose to enter your cells and be broken down for energy. it could be that your body just hasn't completely digested/absorbed everything you've eaten yet.

my knees used to do that before i realized i was doing squats wrong -- is your form ok? most of the stress shouldn't be on your knees to begin with (http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2009/07/08/why-you-need-squats-in-your-workout-and-how-to-do-them-right/). since i started doing squats correctly, my knees don't make any…

can't wait to try this :)

Thanks for the responses! Yeah, I guess it doesn't much matter due to the ~intricacies of cal burning with anaerobic exercise, but I appreciate the advice :)

depending on the crowd, i either say i'm watching calories (which is generally irrelevant to my not drinking), or i'll just get some drink and hold it for the night. i guess it's an insincere way to handle things, but it puts everyone at ease.

can't wait to try these! thanks for posting :)

almond butter is my favorite food ever. the natural kind is great as a PB substitute, and there's a "no-stir" variant made by maranatha i buy sometimes that is literally my junk food (it has a little sugar added, but still better nutrition breakdown than PB). when i discovered this, i tried some other nut butters that my…

there are a bunch of BP meds that make your BP drop a lot when you stand up, or even make you feel like you're going to faint the first few times you take it. it might be a good idea to take it before you go to bed instead of when you wake up in the morning. talking to your doc is a good idea -- tell him/her that you're…

that's how i started too. all my friends would go to the gym, so i started going with them to use the elliptical... and it was TERRIBLE. it wasn't until i started doing strength training that i started having a good time. because then, i wasn't working out because i should, but because i had a goal in mind -- i wanted to…

great post! definitely going to add some of people's recs to my playlists. (although i've been listening to audio lectures recently, as i'm studying for board exams... it's miserable, but i feel less guilty about working out. i can't wait to be done with this so i can go back to running to MUSIC.) some of my go-to songs:…

Last year, I was researching the US Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, aka food stamps. They're essentially beta testing a "healthy food" program out in Massachusetts, in which beneficiaries can only use the vouchers to buy things like whole grains, produce, protein-rich foods -- "healthy foods." Guess what isn't…

oh man, i hadn't seen that video! steve + one of my favorite songs, how can that NOT make me want to get up and move?

i'm not saying it's bad, or that IF is bad, but hunger can be caused by increased metabolism. no judgment on whether/when you choose to eat. it's a scientific fact that after several hours without eating, your body slows down its production of stored sugar and starts breaking down your reserves. when you start eating…

when you haven't eaten for a couple hours, your body slows down its metabolism. this makes sense -- it realizes it's getting less energy, so it stops using energy to store sugar, for example. once you eat something in the morning, or whenever, your body revs up its metabolism -- oh hey, look at all this energy, let's do…

i don't use any formulas or supplements or anything, but i find that i work better when i eat a bunch of protein before i work out, like some egg whites or yogurt or something like that. the point is to supply your muscles with extra energy as they break down, right? so i figure this is a good alternative. also, i'm also…

i saw this earlier and had to make it (i love oatmeal, but i've finally gone completely grain free). it was fantastic cold/room temperature, but then i added a little water and microwaved it for a bit. and it's even better than oatmeal. thanks for the recipe!

AGREED. I want to die during them, and then my knees cry for several days afterward. :-\

LOL.

That's... pretty intense. I've been doing the paleo/primal thing (aka nothing processed, no grains, no beans), and I still eat well over 50 g carbs/day. I've been having some success eating the way I do, and I feel healthy, so you can look into this... but I think Atkins might be the only one (off the top of my head) that…

I have a friend who avoided the freshman 15 by only taking one plate at the cafeteria. Not a plate for food and a bowl for salad, and not going up twice. It seems easy, but those cafeterias will definitely get you. For nighttime hunger pangs, keep a supply of nuts or granola bars or carrots. Don't keep chips or candy.…

I definitely don't go into the gym judging people by appearance. I'll look at what they're doing for ideas for my workout, or look at their form, or something along those lines. If I do, though, it's no different than my real-life gauging of whether an overweight woman is heavier than me. But I know I look ridiculous, so I…

i think the biggest difference as far as my own compliance goes is that the mfp website is way more user friendly and comprehensive. i also like that you can track whatever nutrients you like (in the food section, you can play around with settings). and i cheat less when i just take a handful of this or that -- on ww, if…

eat ~30 min before you work out (yogurt, banana, granola bar...), it really helps.
-
after tracking everything here on mfp, i can't imagine how much less i would have to eat if i threw processed carbs back into the mix, re: calories and especially carbs.
