I don't believe catabolism is based on caloric intake, but rather protein intake. I'm curious what the protein intake was in those 800 cal diets and if it was based on their LBM. Also what was the duration of those studies? If they lost a few lbs muscle over the course of the study, I think it's reasonable that someone…

@psuLemon I should add that my dad wasn't really trying to lose weight. He was more trying to get healthy and help his allergies. His diet was ad libitum. It only restricted protein.
-
Exactly. That was my point. I originally stated that I thought the USDA RDA was too low. I stated that my dad switched to a low protein macronutrient diet and lost quite a bit of muscle. I'm guessing it was somewhere in the neighborhood of the RDA or a little less. @stevencloser suggested that in order to lose muscle…

This is my 3rd time doing keto. Never had bad breath or flu symptoms. Just bodyaches and a mild headache for the first 2 weeks. But from about the 3rd day foreward my energy level is through the roof.
-
Yes, that is interesting. Most powerlifters I know just say they don't want to lose strength, so they always eat in excess. And I know what you mean about carrying around extra weight. I've been fat my whole life; fat and strong.

Been keto for 2 weeks. Lost 14 lbs. Your calorie intake is probably too high. Not sure what your weight, lean body mass, or activity level is, but all of those can help you determine what your calorie intake should be. Best if you weight everything in grams on a digital scale. Guessing portion sizes doesn't work. For keto…

44 and ready to get in the best shape of my life. All friend requests welcome.

The body has amino acid needs. It cannot create amino acids from fat or glycogen. If protein intake is not sufficient to meet those needs, it will catabloize muscle. Everything I have read points to a minimum of 0.8g/kg of bodyweight in dietary protein to avoid muscle loss. The RDA of 56g/day may be fine if you are a 155…

Same story here. Lost 60 lbs 4yrs ago. Gained 80 back. Started 2 weeks ago and I'm down 14 lbs. This app is such a help for tracking.

Motivation please. 44yo, 80 lbs more to lose, keto for now.

Glass of water with 2Tbl apple cider vinegar and 2Tbl lemon juice and add stevia to sweeten. Yes, it's gross. When I did this, I didn't feel like eating anytime soon after and it took away sugar cravings in general.

Just started a couple weeks ago. Add me. I could use all the help I can get to reach my goal and keep it off this time.

Bacon IS the best thing for my body. Period. *I am now closing my eyes and plugging my ears repeating, "La la la, I'm not listening!"
-
I'm sure it builds some muscle in previously sedentary individuals. It's not very scientific, but I just look at those who primarily do long distance anything and say, "I don't want to look like that." I look at weightlifters or Olympic sprinters and I'm like, " Yeah, that's where I want to be."

An unpopular opinion I am develpoing since starting counting calories again: When counting calories and measuring everything, no matter where you are, it is perfectly acceptable to lick your plate clean.
-
@ritzvin @jdlobb I'll have to look into that this open season. I used to have aetna and at the time the only gym type benefit was a discount for Curves. Not exactly helpful for me. Right now I have Kaiser Permanente. No gym/nutrition benefits that I know of.

Ah, my mistake. But this just reaffirms my opinion about steady state cardio. But I should clarify that: if someone is going to do one form of exercise, strength training is the way to go since it offers similar CV benefits, but also increases muscle mass. However, my opinion is heavily influence by my preference for a…
-
Do you have references to back that up? As far as "huge", I guess that's relative. For my dad it was over the course of about a year or 2 and my guess is that he lost about 15lbs of muscle.
-
I have found no conclusive evidence that aerobic exercise has greater CV benefits than anaerobic exercise. Neither did this study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5329739/ "Despite all the research, further studies are still warranted to delve further into the impact that both aerobic and anaerobic exercise…

Ah.. So, I understand how HIIT would not improve muscle building in someone who lifts. But wouldn't it build muscle in someone who typically only does cardio (steady state)?
-
Then so is weightlifting.... Should I say ""aerobic exercise " to be specific?
-
What is a typical ratio? I was under the impression that a 1:2 ratio @ 100%:60% was standard. Ex. 1min @ 100% followed by 2 min @ 60%. That sort of mirrors my lifting. Each set takes roughly 1 min and I rest 2 min between sets. I monitor my heartrate which drops to about 60% between sets.
-
I did read it, but I'll look at the references too. My main leaning to HIIT over cardio is that it is closer to weightlifting in it's muscle building potential... if I am not mistaken. However, I pretty much just lift and try to stay away from all that gross running stuff...

Totally agree. My comment was more refering to the assertion that protein intake would have to be consistantly at 10-20g/day to lose muscle.
