I used to run stairs for about 30 min. on my lunch at work. I would consider this HIIT. 100% effort took 45sec. to get to the top and a 90 sec walk down. By the end of the 30 min. My 45 sec. Interval was nowhere near the top and I was practically crawling but I was still pushing 100% and breathing way harder than when I…

Yes! Bears AND zombies!

That's exactly why I don't run; it's just way to dangerous because if all the bears!

No way he was getting that much. He was about 85kg when he started the diet. When I was growing up he was a runner an was fit at about 75kg. No way he got 75kg of protein. But according to the USDA a man only needs 56g/day. Found an article that breaks it down by body type and has quite a list of sources: "Obese people can…

I mostly just lift. Every set to failure. Running hurts my feet and gives me flashbacks to my childhood, being the fat kid and running 2 miles every morning to try to lose weight. Didn't work. My parents owned an Italian restaurant...

Opposite for me. Not being able to walk or lift my arms after a workout makes me feel like I've accomplished something. Sort of a twisted inspirational boost.

I should clarify that the diet they were on limited the type of food they ate, not the quantity- other than protein. My dad stated that he never felt hungry. Also, my dad was almost famous for his "Popeye" forearms. There was no mistake that he was muscular and not fat. My goal as a teenager was always to beat him at arm…

So should they charge more for women who keep getting pregnant because they can't seem to stop whatever it is they are doing to get pregnant?

@sijomial @lemurcat12 @amusedmonkey I did not mean thise new to exercise. Low intensity initially will help prevent injury. By "cardio" I meant what most people think of when they hear the term- steady state cardio. Technically all exercise, aerobic and anaerobic (weightlifting included), is cardio because they all offer…
-
This would depend on the intensity of the HIIT. And as @GottaBurnEmAll stated not all "HIIT" is equal. To me, HIIT means the intervals are 100% all out.

I agree that most people who just eat whatever they want would improve their health if they followed the USDA's recommendations. However, it falls short of what all of Light's research concluded. An organization that changes it's health recommendations to please an industry that is only interested in profit should not be…

To simply lose weight? Yes, that simple. To maximize fat loss? No, the type of food you eat can have a huge impact on your energy level. Eating nutrient dense foods that make you feel good will make you want to be more active and you will naturally increase movement without thinking about it.

Nah, I still am not a fan of cardio(but it's better than nothing). I believe there are much greater benefits from high intensity exercise. How do you know you don't burn as much calories doing HIIT? I believe that much shorter, high intensity exercise may not burn as much at the time, but the residual calorie burn from…

Yes, sitting on your butt is a much greater waste of time. Since I don't like exercising in general, I'm going to spend the least amount of time possible to get the greatest benefit which means high intensity. I just want to get it over with so I can get back to thing I enjoy.
-
I'll stick with my strong heart and plentiful food from weightlifting and HIIT. More bang for the buck.

I've been keto for about 12 days and lost 14 lbs. I've been logging all food for about 10 days. My job is lightly active, other than that, I've done no exercise. You're welcome to friend me and look at my diary, but keep in mind my stats are no doubt quite different from yours. 282 lbs./180lbs. LBM 3 years ago I lost about…

Cardio is a waste of time (unless you actually enjoy it).

How 'bout if instead of charging more for the obese they include coverage that would help them, like nutrition therapy? That's only covered once you've develpoed a condition like diabetes. Discounts for gym memberships, maybe? ...but then again I've never thought insurance companies were actually interested in getting…

I don't give a whole lot of weight to anything the USDA says, including their RDA. Luise Light, former USDA Director of Nutrition Research writes extensively about why their guidelines should not be trusted. I especially diagree with the RDA of protein/day. I don't believe it is nearly enough to meet the body's amino acid…

@psuLemon Agreed. I can be quite nit picky. Outside of very extreme dietary conditions (starvation, very low protein, etc.) BMR will stay pretty consistant based on LBM. And as far as that study goes, I don't know anyone who is trying to lose weigt and consumes 25% of their calories from HFCS, so it's irrelevant.…

Everything we do has an effect on our metabolism. It increases and decreases all the time depending on what we are doing at any given moment. It is not a constant. Eating, sleeping, exercising, stress - our metabolic rate is conatantly adapting to the body's needs. But if you mean BMR, that is just an average of our body"s…

I don't deny the physics of CICO. Energy will not disappear. But I have 2 main issues with how the term seems to be used pertaining to dieting. 1. CI is fairly easy to determine, CO is not. Our bodies are very complex and adapt energy output to many different factors: food(amount and type), exercise, air temperature,…
-
This relects my belief on CICO: "Newton’s first law of thermodynamics states that the energy of an isolated system is constant. In other words, in a laboratory, or “isolated system,” 1,000 calories of broccoli and 1,000 calories of soda are, in fact, the same. I’m not saying Newton was wrong about that. It’s true that when…

@AlabasterVerve @psuLemon The studies you refer to seem to show that in random groups of participants, keto diets and non- keto diets have a similar average combined result. Seems there would be an equal number IR and IS in both groups for example. Do you know of any studies that looked at individual responses on keto vs.…
-
@lemurcat12 I've always thought that maybe I was IR, although my labs are always good. Would it make sense that I have MUCH more energy on keto even at a lower caloric intake because of my high BF%? I'm 5' 11" 285lb. and about 180lb. LBM. Previously when I lost weight, my energy was not as high when I was close to 225lbs.
-
@psuLemon Haha, you keep saying things I agree with! Yes, I agree about NEAT/TEA. Perhaps the reason I lose weight fast and have so much energy on keto is because my BF is well over 30% and it gives an endless source of fuel. Also agree that keto is not optimal for gains. But my problem is not that I want more muscle, I…

@CharlieBeansmomTracey As I have said before, each individual responds differently ti different types of food. My mtabolic response is different than yours. For you carbs don't seem to matter. For me they do. If I eat junk carbs at any calorie level, my energy is very low all the time. The type of calorie makes a…
-
@lemurcat12 Actually I'm not sure about BMR. I guess what I was refering to was NEAT. I know our energy level is affected by what we eat. Each individual is different. I certainly know how to count calories and measure portions and when I diet I'm obsessive about tracking everything. I have seen a tremendous difference in…

@lemurcat12 CICO seems to have improved. The CICO I learned since I was an obese 9 yr old and up through college was that "a calorie is a calorie...Doesn't matter what source it comes from... Eat less exercise more...You're fat simply because you eat too much and exercise too little." Now some of that may be true, but the…
