  • Wednesday is officially my favourite day of the week because I have handstand class and it always makes me happy especially when my instructor is happy with my improvements - nice to have feedback from an independent source that things are getting better. Even though it is so hardcore for the 50 minutes we work on…
  • Haha - The highs and lows of handstands :)
  • Welcome @MaryBethHempel. The first couple of pages of this thread has some great resources which everyone has found if you need resources. No need to restrict yourself to handstands - i like to think any kind of handbalancing activities (but I am biased as I am quite liking elbow stands at the moment).
  • Just bumping this up to see how people are going. I have been slowly grinding away at improving my splits/hip flexibility with daily yoga practice along with ballet and flexibility classes. Progress is slow but I am making progress. Still a million inches off the floor but I have seen a marked improvement in my pancake and…
  • @deviette - try working on headstands and elbowstand if your wrists are painful as it helps with the balance element. I had an awesome time in my contortion class tonight as my instructor didn't turn up so me and one of my contortion buddies decided to freestyle it up so i spent ages working on handstands and elbowstands…
  • Well done @Orphia. You have been amazingly consistent. Big thank you to everyone that participated in the challenge this month. It was good to see everyone's progress. I definitely will keep posting here as I have lots of handbalancing goals including 1 minute balance and my big goal of being able to do a press handstand .…
  • Glad you enjoyed the challenge @tropicalchicy. Slow and steady wins the race or in other words sometimes it feels like you are making no progress with something but after all the little changes that you make along the way turn into something massive. I work on my handstands and splits a lot and progressive is painfully…
  • I am living vicariously through you both today as I had a double miss - had to miss my weekly hand balancing class or do any practice. Stupid work and stupid work policies of not doing handstands when in corporate logo'ed clothing. Back to it tomorrow.
  • I have been sharing my handstand stories with some of the people I work with as they find it entertaining that my mild exterior hides a secret acrobat. Anyway today one of my work people that I have inspired her to take up adult gymnastics classes. Very happy to be spreading the handstand and acrobatic joy around :)
  • Another practice done as my Monday instructor loves making us do wall drills as core strengthening and opening up shoulder for bendbacks. My wheel poses is definitely improving. It is funny as I started doing daily yoga for pretty much the same reason I started doing handstands - i read that it was good for opening up…
  • Thanks @Orphia. Very much appreciated. Great looking handstand everyone :)
  • Aww @Orphia - I don't want the thread to stop either. Maybe I will start just a general Handstand challenge just to keep the magic alive :) (and to keep spreading the joy and happiness of inversions and hand balancing). I am really missing my Saturday acro class at the moment (and acro class misses me apparently) but I…
  • Just thought I would share the good news that tomorrow (23 June) is International Handstand Day. http://www.handstandday.com/ Hooray.
  • Beautiful shape there @ContraryMaryMary I had my handstand class. I was very happy when the instructor said that my form has really improved and i held a nicely balanced stand for a long time. Daily practice is paying off . Hooray.
  • Yeah sorry - i was describing it badly. It is a good drill to do. Hollow body holds is another one that we seem to spend a lot of time on. I think I am developing a core of steel.
  • I think it depends on your shoulder mobility but you kind of push them down. Scroll down to the middle of this article though he calls it pvc floor drill for a visual explanation. We sometimes use a broom stick but that is usually for aerial conditioning drills, and for handstands it putting hands in the handstand position…
  • @mom23mangos - i think your alignment is better in pic one. I think it would be easier to adjust your hips if you are looking at your handst rather than tucking your chin in. Maybe try doing some floor drills which are basically lying face down on the floor. Your put your hands straight out in handstand position, try to…
  • It all counts @tropicalchicy Handstands are tricky. Some days it is easy to balance next day a disaster. Welcome @Heltinne. Enjoy the upside down fun. Only a little bit of practice today just a few handstand between weightlifting sessions. Squats, deadlifts and OHP were in the heavy zone so I didn't push too hard as it is…
  • https://gmb.io/crow-pose/ Using the app is obviously not so awesome for linking stuff
  • I have done the Strong Curves program a few times and got great results and really enjoyed it. I don't think weights are specified rather just go with the usual progressive overload program. Twenty pounds is fairly cheap in the scheme of things though. I did find a free glute challenge that might be useful to see if you…
  • A nice article for the lovers of crows and cranes amongst us
  • Glad it helped @Orphia The handstand prep work is just as useful as handstand practice itself. Well that is what we spend most of the time doing in the handstand classes I attend. Most of it is about working on correct body shape and strengthening areas so when you get in the air it is easier. Just a quick practice today…
  • @Orphia - looking good. If you can, try and think about squeezing your legs together. It helps keep everything tight and upright and easier to stay vertical in the air longer. By the time I got around to handstand practice it had been a busy day of exercise and I was tired and I couldn't get rid of my wonky lean which a…
  • Hello @deviette Can't wait to hear about your progress  @Contrary_MaryM - cuteness overload
  • I thinkI wrists is probably one of the trickiest bits to master with handstands. I learnt a neat trick in handstand to help with sore wrists. Basically you do a squat but you tuck your wrists into your knee pits and squeeze your forearms/wrists and it gives a lot of relief. Excellent handstand for class for me tonight…
  • Very inspirational @Orphia I didn't get in any handstand practice today which is a bit rubbish. A brief early morning yoga session was all I could fit in as I was mentally drained after a hectic day at work, long job interview in my lunch break than family duties. On the positive I have gotten some people at my work…
  • Sorry that the hamstring is giving you trouble @xelsoo. I can definitely see a big improvement between your day 1 and day 40! Imagine how good it is going to look when you get to day 90
  • Looking good @tropicalchicy It does get a bit hard to squeeze everything in. I had lots of handstand practice tonight in my contortion class which made me happy. Especially as I can now really see an improvements in my kick up and balancing skills. Daily practice is definitely helping.
  • @Orphia - congratulations on the 50km run. That is incredible. Thanks for the words of encouragement. It is a tough one as my eating habits haven't changed that much and if anything my exercise level has increased so in theory I should be svelte and happy. This month I am trying to cut alcohol out of my diet to see if that…
  • Good luck with your race tomorrow @Orphia. I hope you are on the east coast of Oz as the west is meant to be rain central tomorrow morning which is not ideal long race conditions!! Today was ballet and lyra classes but I managed to squeeze in some handstand practice in the afternoon. My handstand alignment is okay but I am…
