From January 2017 to mid-May 2018 due to several non-running related issues, I only ran about 200 miles after averaging about 1,400 to 1,800 miles per year for the previous 4 years. Because I run either trails or country roads, I do not use any headphones or ear buds... I actually prefer the sounds of the outdoors and the steady slap of my shoes... I still do some barefoot running to re-adjust my stride and keep my feet healthy. I prefer doing it on trails rather than pavement.
