nuts and seeds (even peanuts) are tasty and high fat, but check the carbs and limit serving size, some are lower net carb than others. pecan & macadamia are best, cashews are bad. https://ketosummit.com/carbs-in-nuts-and-seeds (sort by net carbs for a good priority listing) Cheese! there are a hundred different types of…

@cedarsidefarm Don't let the scale get you down. Take some body measurements as well, at least chest, waist and hips. If you see a plateau on the scale, but are losing inches, that is still fantastic! It means you are losing fat, but also gaining muscle, which is denser.

I did Atkins about 10 years ago and had to keep net carbs at under 20g per day to keep losing weight, lost about 40 pounds over a year, so about a pound per week. Of course, we found it too restrictive and went back to our crappy diet and gained it all back, and more. This time, I was diagnosed diabetic, so I see low carb…

Dr Eric Westman compared artificial sweeteners to "methadone" (which is a somewhat less addictive opioid used to step people down from heroin addiction). Yeah, they're not very good for you, but they are a useful step to help people get over the sugar addiction. If you still feel that you "need" that intense sweet (even…

Absolutely true! I used to hate coffee, and would only drink crappy office coffee with those fake flavored creamers when I was terribly short on sleep. Good freshly ground coffee and real heavy cream makes a huge difference.

LOL #21. my husband says the other day "oh would you just shut up about the diet", because he doesn't want to do a low carb diet with me. you're right. nobody cares. except all of you lovely people on this Low carb forum, who don't seem to mind how obsessive I've gotten about it. :*

your best bets on cheap protein are eggs and chicken and cheese. I find grocery store rotisserie chickens are a quick easy meal, and then boil down the bones for soup, which gives another meal at good economy. You just have to get used to tossing in some veggies for the soup instead of noodles. vegetarian and keto don't go…

If you don't like stevia, I have heard recommendations for Monk Fruit as another natural sweetener. It is more expensive and not as common, but you can find it on amazon. I haven't tried it yet. Stevia blends like truvia (with erythritol) may reduce the bitter aftertaste. If you want flavored coffee, add some spices…

non-diabetics typically have very stable glucose levels, on average (even after eating) under 100. if you are 100-110 when fasting in the morning, that is on the high side of 'normal' and may indicate metabolic syndrome. What are your readings during the day before lunch or dinner? A more accurate measurement is A1c, which…

This is a nice study, but seems to talk about standard of care as much as the dietary intervention. Maybe, if those under usual care had been given the same information, the results would have been more relevant as to standard of care. I think a HUGE problem right now is the Doctors and American Diabetes *kitten*. are…

I'm having similar issues. during the day I can get fasting readings before lunch or dinner down to around 100, but still getting 130s in the mornings. one site recommended waking up at 3 am and testing for a few days to see if you are normal during the night and just getting a "dawn phenomenon" rise in the morning OR if…

@nvmomketo nice links and videos. I've seen a couple other people doing self-experimentation like that with high calorie and low carb with similar results.

I grew up in the 80s-90s. It is hard to reset your mind after decades of being told "fat is bad". The first time I did Atkins was about 10 years ago, it was called a "fad" diet and I really thought "this can't be very healthy, but it works ok". We didn't understand the science behind it, so I felt this could only be a…

I would think that eating naturally and low carb veggies and taking fewer medications would be much healthier for the baby with fewer risks of side effects than eating more carbs and needing more diabetic medications (that have unknown effects and could harm the baby). find a doctor that understands diabetes + low carb.

I am diabetic and by eating lower carb I have gotten off insulin and A1c after 6 months without insulin was 6.7%. My goal for this year is very low carb/ keto and get A1c under 5 with no medications.

weigh your food and track your net carbs (total carbs - fiber). I did atkins a few years ago, and their recommendation to find your personal balance point is start at 20g net carbs per day and follow that strictly for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks, start adding a few more foods/carbs per day until you start to plateu, then back…

have your doctor do general bloodwork and they can tell you if you have any major vitamin deficiencies. I have heard a lot of people starting out lose a lot of water weight and this really throws off your electrolyte balance and can give you "keto flu" symptoms. another common symptom of low potassium or magnesium is…

honestly, during the summer I never use the oven, because it makes the entire house miserable. look for any meat recipes that sautee on the stove top in a pan. I like any recipe that pairs meats with low carb veggies, so I can cook all in one pan: chicken marsala (chicken + mushrooms) fajita meat with sauteed peppers and a…

most food show total carbs, but you can go to http://www.myfitnesspal.com/account/diary_settings and change your view to show carbs and then show fiber in the next column, so you can subtract that out if you are only counting net carbs.

I ran across the bulletproof site a while back, from one of my nootropics groups, but I don't drink coffee very often, so focused more at the time on his dietary recommendations. I started 16/8 Intermittent fasting last week, and then on Friday listening to his podcast, found the bulletproof suggestion that you could have…

also, the Greeks have this and it is awesome!! I call it "grilled cheese sandwich without the bread". Serve with a little sprinkle of herbs and lemon juice. if you don't have a real grill, get your pan REALLY hot first, like a little ball of water just dances around and doesn't splat, then add oil, then add the cheese.…

we used to do that with parmesan cheese, baked in the oven on parchment paper, but it would get far too crispy to hold together as a taco. it would shatter as soon as you bit into it. the egg for binding it all together sounds like a great idea!

How is your success using coconut oil instead of MCT? Bulletproof.com website says "Brain Octane is a purified form of medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) derived from 100% pure coconut oil", which is more easily converted to ketones than plain coconut oil. I figured the "bulletproof" brand hype was a bit overrated, and I…

ok. so thanks for the advice. I've adjusted % on macros to closer to my targets and that should help focus my goals a little better. I must say that I expected people on a "low-carb" forum to be a little more informed about how low carb diets work. All calories are NOT equal. the only way to lose on the traditional low fat…

Weigh your food for better accuracy. it is not recommended to go under 1200 calories per day.

me too! I'm married, but would rather have furry friends than kids, so I think that still qualify as crazy cat lady. but I've got it under control at the moment - only two indoor cats and two feral ones that I feed outside.

I confess that I tend to eat stuff, and then realize when logging my food that I had too many carbs... and I usually enter last night's dinner at the same time as today's lunch, while I'm at work.
